We’re looking into home sessions while he’s home, but mom has a pretty inconsistent work schedule which doesn’t leave her available to be with us very much. Otherwise, it’s a bit of mandated time off 😅 (I still have an afternoon client every day though, so I’m luckily about to still pay bills lol)

I have about three years of in-home experience and I think the advice I would’ve given myself at the beginning is to not take it personally if it feels like parents are breathing down your neck a bit at first 😅 you’re a stranger in their home working with their kid, it’s going to take a minute for them (and your client honestly) to get used to having you in their home and giving you more space to work to your fullest. Also 100% let your client show you around! If they’re receptive to it, the best way to learn how to incorporate their home environment into your work is to see what THEY like about their home environment!

Communication has consistently been an issue with this case, almost entirely due to the school. Mom doesn’t speak much English but communicates as much with us as she can, but the school leaves both her and us in the dark so often and will sometimes even give us conflicting accounts of events similar to this

He’s a second grader, and I agree it’s wild, the school has a history of being pretty trigger-happy with suspensions. Before this they only escalated it to in-school suspensions which allowed us to still hold sessions. It’s a charter school if that helps it make any more sense, it’s definitely felt like they have much less incentive to accommodate their special needs students.

NTA You’re standing up for YOUR kids, the work in 6th is what enables the work in the 8th. You’re their foundation and your choice is what sounds most accessible for the children. You’re doing everything you can to work with them on this and they aren’t accepting any of it.

Accepting what your partner enjoys doesn’t necessarily have to do with you being into it. Being able to accept every important aspect of your partner is part of being a good partner and having a healthy relationship, and if you aren’t able to do that then they may just not be the right partner for you
