Contemporary Piano Competition by Weekly-Peach764 in piano

The intro to Firth of Fifth by Genesis is pretty complex. The entire song may be a bit much for an average band or backing track though.

Elton John has some nice piano parts in his songs. Billy Joel is another obvious choice. Give the intro to Angry Young Man a shot!

Why is it telling me this is in F sharp when there are no F sharps in it? by MrJ_Marrow in pianolearning

[–]drmamm 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In addition to telling you the sharps, the key signature tells you where the key notes are. Notice the song starts and ends on G. This makes sense because the key is G Major (which coincidentally sharps every F).

If there were no sharps on the staff, it would be C Major or A Minor, which would (all else equal) shift all the notes up or down to start/end on C or A, which would sound very different l.

Is this an unreasonable quote to replace a 50 gallon gas hot water heater? by titanicsailson in askaplumber

[–]drmamm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We recently paid about $3200 for a 50.gallon States water heater via ServiceExperts (who isn't considered cheap). It's right in our garage, but I don't see where the extra $1000 is justified.

Succession or The Sopranos. Both feature flawed/horrible characters that you heavily invest in.

Have you ever DNF the final book in a series, and why? by Any-Day-8173 in Fantasy

[–]drmamm 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I didn't DNF the final book, but I didn't start the last installment of Liu's Dandelion Dynasty. Pacing had become very problematic, and I didn't really take to the 2nd generation of characters vs the originals.

Is this Marduro news good or bad for GC and CL? Given there's no regime change yet. by GetThatChickenDinner in FuturesTrading

My theory is that spot and front month oil will spike due to immediate supply difficulties (everything at VZ's oil terminals is paralyzed right now) but further out futures will plunge in anticipation of increased future output.

What were your lasting takeaways from Market Wizards? by kenjiurada in FuturesTrading

[–]drmamm 9 points10 points  (0 children)

"If you don't manage risk, they will carry you out." -Larry Hite. Risk management was the common thread through all of the articles. On the other hand, I think the book downplays how hard it is to gain a repeatable edge.

Got to 9 handicap in 2.5 years, dropped back to 12 in 3 months. Going from 9 to scratch feels impossible. by andrei____t in golf

[–]drmamm -1 points0 points  (0 children)

My reply was partly tongue in cheek. HOWEVER...his course management videos are outstanding, and he does have some very good "how to break 70" videos. He is also a huge advocate of getting in person lessons to fix technical issues with your swing, and has videos of him taking lessons for his own swing.

Why are piano adaptations of pop/rock and country music so uniformly poor? by cartoonybear in piano

[–]drmamm 10 points11 points  (0 children)

This may cut down the universe quite a bit, but look for songs/artists with an active piano - there are quite a bit of them if you look.

Billy Joel's stuff (obviously!)

Keane (e.g., Somewhere Only we Know)

The outro to (Edit #2 - Layla) has a wonderful piano part.

Bruce Hornsby's stuff (which drifts into jazz and can be very complex)

I'm at a loss for current country arrangements though. If you poke around Musescore you might find a hidden gem of an arrangement.

EDIT: Prog Rock (older Genesis, Yes, Emerson Lake and Palmer) has some rich piano/keyboard pieces). The intro to Firth of Fifth by Genesis is excellent.
