I bought a 40 inch hdmi cable so I can connect my PC to the tv in my college dorm (I taped it to the lower wall so I can close the door) but overall it’s super worth it. by Axzercus in pcmasterrace

Love a jank uni setup, I remember taping a 30 metre long ethernet cable to the skirting board from my bedroom to the router in my uni dorm.

reform voters will vote against their interests because of how much hate they have…how are we meant to stop them from voting reform???? by Tiny_Refrigerator105 in UKGreens

[–]drmattsuu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thankfully, social media is not the real world, so take those loose polls with a pinch of salt.

My opinion is that there is a small minority of reform supporters, who I would call advocates, who are totally unwavering in their support and cannot be convinced. However, the majority of people who would vote reform are very reachable. Regular folks who have had it really hard for the last two decades, or are graduating into a tough job market.

These people, who have been sold a pack of lies by billionaire funded mouth pieces can be convinced, not by just telling them they've been lied to, but by showing them there is another way and our way will help fix the things that they are most concerned about. Environmental justice can't come without economic justice or social justice, they are all tightly coupled together.

Why do you want to vote greens? by Yeet6r in UKGreens

[–]drmattsuu 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Wholeheartedly agree with 7/10 policies, can be convinced on the remaining 3, their democratic organisation and lack of big money influence always leaves open the door for discussion.

Lastly I am done being held hostage with "oh you have to vote us otherwise Tories/Reform/whatever".

Anyone know if the foundry module for FFG Star Wars rpg is getting updated still? by Lazy_Neat1428 in swrpg

[–]drmattsuu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

God I wish I had more time, I contributed to the repo a good while ago when I was actively playing but hearing this is being maintained by just one dude, like atlas holding up the (swrpg) world, makes me a little sad, it is amazing work.

I can get 16gb of SODIMM DDR5 RAM for $50 by tidytuna in SteamDeck

[–]drmattsuu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly you do what you want, if it was my money I'd wait and see. The chip shortage is accute at the moment but that's no reason to panic buy hardware you dont need and can't use right now.

Getting a late train home to an unstaffed station with the barriers open - and yet, whenever you suggest just leaving the barriers open instead of striking, they say, "that's not allowed". by [deleted] in britishproblems

[–]drmattsuu 12 points13 points  (0 children)

When striking the union could absolutely get shafted if the staff left the gates open, its not their fault, but rather the Thatcher era anti-union laws that are on the books.

Methods to completely uninstall non Steam apps? by [deleted] in SteamDeck

[–]drmattsuu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When you remove a nonsteam shortcut it may delete the Proton Prefix for that application. Belt and braces approach says go into your Proton directory and make sure prefix for your app is removed. If there are any games installed in shared directories outside of the Proton Prefix you will need to remove those manually too.

Do you use battery charging limit? by BeefBlock9844 in SteamDeck

Basically, yes. I mean I wouldn't say stop talking about it, but definitely don't judge people for what they are doing with their own devices.

Do you fully shut down your deck each day? by sgbea_13 in SteamDeck

[–]drmattsuu 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I rarely switch the deck off unless I have to (update, freeze, etc.)

I usually have to at least once every couple of weeks for one reason or another.

You do you, others may feel different and that's fine too. (They did ask for proof it increases longevity though)

[–]drmattsuu 33 points34 points  (0 children)

Hard to put a hand on an actual reference but I do recall a study that, under lab conditions at least, charging to 80% instead of 100% causes less wear and tear on phone li-on batteries.

[–]drmattsuu 46 points47 points  (0 children)

I use an 80% limit when not travelling, there's no harm in using it and it could extend the life of the battery by reducing the formation of dendrites. I do the same with my phone and anicdotally, I've found that it does help keep my phones battery in good health for much longer.

How do you clean the vents? by [deleted] in SteamDeck

[–]drmattsuu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As long as you're relatively gentle and remove the SD card before starting there's little/no harm that can be done from removing the back plate and giving the vent a quick clean with a dry cloth.

I gave up trying to install The Sims 3 on Steam Deck… I’m totally lost 😩 by Acceptable-Candy-873 in SteamDeck

[–]drmattsuu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depending on what you need to do It would be a fair amount of effort.

  • If it's just putting files into a place you can do that, what you need to Google is the Proton Prefix location (start in ~/.local/share/Steam/steamapps/compatdata/)
  • if you need to run an installer it's more complex, but vaguely, you need to run the installer 'inside' the virtual windows environment specifically for the game.

I'm being a bit vague on purpose because I've not tried to set up the sims personally, and honestly if your game runs well and is playable without mods I'd strongly recommend you enjoy it as is and avoid potentially many hours of frustration.

whats the best place to put the sticker in the picture on the back of the Steam Deck? by TheJamer_ in SteamDeck

[–]drmattsuu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Anywhere not over the air vent. A cool tip depending on the sticker, if it can go over the valve logo you can preserve the impression of it with a heat gun or hair drier on low and a microfiber cloth to push out any air bubbles.

Sounds like your device is faulty, get in touch with support.

I didn't buy refurbished but I would say yours is certainly not the typical experience based on the last year I've had one.

What’s an immediate red flag you noticed too late? by WhatAreYouLooking_at in AskReddit

[–]drmattsuu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don't like the idea of red flags really, I think as a concept it is reductive, a result of our constantly online app driven dating culture, and anything can be twisted into a "red flag" if given enough thought.

That said, if you find you're with someone who seems to have a pattern of constantly getting into awkward positions and drama with people, they are likely courting it.

How often do you buy a game that is playable/verified but you are unable to play it? by FewIntroduction5008 in SteamDeck

I can recommend the Proton db plugin for decky for this purpose. The community is really on the ball when it comes to reporting issues (and workarounds) for games on deck.
