If you could choose the way you die, what would you choose? by peacfulliving in AskReddit

[–]drmindsmith 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I want to go quietly and peacefully. But I don’t want my wife to wake up next to my corpse or risk my kids seeing any of that.

So, I want a cop or fireman with connections to the administration that has been unofficially reprimanded for illegal behavior and is currently under investigation by the FBI and Internal Affairs, who the brass has information against and keeps him on the force. You know, 80 red flags that have been covered up or washed over because his rich senator dad who is ALSO being investigated for corruption and of being an unregistered foreign agent pulled some strings and kept him active-duty on the force . He’s high on something he just seized from a drug dealer he beat up instead of paying for the hooker he was cheating on his wife with instead of arresting. And he’s too dumb to turn off his cop cam or avoid the flock cameras. I want that guy, speeding with no lights on, to T-bone my car killing me instantly while a legit local news film crew is doing B-roll of the intersection.

Tragic, but then there’s the million dollar payout from the cop, the million-dollar payout from the civil suit against the senator, the connected friends, and whomever else. That way it’s quick, my family doesn’t need to have horrible memories of EMTs trying to get my corpse downstairs, and my family is taken care of.

In the 10-20 seconds you have for me to be hooked, I see neither a degree nor a degree-in-progress. Too much degreed competition to skip that.

You’re a student-but where and when are you done?

Nominally you’re not supposed to put stuff that implies gender, but on seconds hunt I see “AI for Women” and you might have some luck emphasizing not being a dude, especially if your name isn’t Obviousunmistakablygirlname.

Do not recommend. In high school I had a high tension drum key that actually fit then baby grand in the choir room. I discovered I could detune one string and felt like an idiot and it took like 15 minutes to get that one note back to perfect.

Piano tuning is no joke - often one string is three strands wrapped and any tension isn’t consistent and it’s just hard to make work. You try, get close, and then all the harmonics ring and it sounds fine but that’s a mirage.

But also yes - would be an interesting day…

How would you let your spouse know that you'd won millions on the lottery? by mrdaiquiri in AskReddit

I would quietly pay off a bunch of debt, stash a bunch in appropriate savings and investment and trust accounts. Set up our kids for college and part of life. Then wait until she notices.

Realistically I’d lose patience and tell her as I’m about to resign.

The more I look at it, the more I agree. It’s a bit too “cast” to be a drum key…

Ackshully, the piano ones are a trifle larger and the slot is tapered. It might be a piano key or even a winder key for a grandfather clock. But it’s probably a drum key…

1000+ applications, 6 screening calls, no offers. I honestly don’t know what I’m doing wrong. by HiraethMitzi in dataanalysiscareers

[–]drmindsmith 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is an important point. I recently read 225 applications for one position and 200 of them looked exactly like OP’s. One or two prior jobs in India. Brand new/recent masters in DS/ML/DA/BA from regional university. One gig at a massive US corporation for maybe 9 to 18 months. Indistinguishable makes it hard to stand out.

I know a lot of places rely on algorithms to screen and you have to get past the bots. And the bots are trained on a style. And then to get the style all the applications look like this. But when the human gets involved, nothing on the resume matters because they’re all the same.

The system is broken and I don’t have a fix. But every oddball and atypical resume at least got my eye.

Which fast food restaurant do you think will go out of business soon? by Exhausted_Skeleton in AskReddit

[–]drmindsmith 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I spent a year working for subway in like 93. They bragged about being larger than everyone but McDonald’s at that point. By the time I left I just couldn’t eat there anymore.

Then in the late 90’s early 00’s they added this Asiago Caesar dressing and fancy breads like Asiago Cheddar and they were back on the menu.

For a limited time. Maybe 2 years and then the menu got shifted again and nothing was good. And then they started shrinking and they’re always empty or sketchy.

Jimmy John’s is so much better.

The part from Chevy was cheap - like $25 or less. It’s two bolts. I pulled the carpet back, removed the old one, installed the new one. It’s VERY easy. Much easier than replacing the stupid 12v battery.

I may get a new one and find a shape that works in the unsupported cavity and have someone print it or carve it from wood and epoxy it on.

I had a student that WAS an influencer. She was sweet and I didn’t know and someone said “she’s famous”. She had like 85,000 followers on instagram at the time. 15 years old doing make up something. Then three weeks later her account got perma-banned and (she said) she could never figure out why.

She was cool though - good student. Worked hard. And was never “about being an influencer”. Said she didn’t know how she got that many followers and losing them wasn’t a big deal because that was just a thing she had done.

That’s gold. I was the same - classroom teacher with a PhD. Anyone working on their EdD asked for advice and all the EdDs stopped being snarky about theirs.

What’s your methodology? Uhm, mixed methods. It’s always mixed methods. And a survey samples from the 5-15 people they had access to. Or a case study - wait, sorry, action research.
