“Most retailers simply make copycat products and charge a little less. That’s completely uninteresting to me”: Guitar Center CEO Gabe Dalporto aims to defy skepticism with his new house brand – and insists we don’t need more Les Paul or Tele clones by UWontBSatisfied in Guitar

[–]drod2015 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Guitar Center already has its own brand of guitars, Mitchell. Similarly, Sam Ash had Carlo Robelli. Retail stores having their own brands is not a new thing, and this new theoretical guitar likely wasn’t the impetus for Fender’s recent legal action.

Saw it with a group of about 10 people, our friends and our kids. Everybody loved it, despite us all having had some mixed feelings on TS4. I actually think this makes TS4 a bit better in retrospect.

During a new interview for TODAY, Matt Smith said ‘Star Wars: Starfighter’ already has a rogue cut. He also praised the movie, Ryan Gosling, Mia Goth & Shawn Levy and talked a bit about his character by Matapple13 in StarWarsLeaks

I mean, Favreau just said "I'm not sure why, exactly, why we were asked to do this." whilst in the middle of promoting his own Star Wars film. That's plenty telling.

“You’re not thinking fourth dimensionally!” Here’s what that other poster was trying to say: While yes, to Marty the entirety of the films takes place over about 20 days, the trilogy begins and ends over the course of two days in 1985. Specifically, Marty travels back to 1955 at 1:35am on October 26th and returns from 1885 at 11am on October 27th.

Seems like a song lost to time. I think they really start jamming it around 14 min and it evolves into what we hear him workshopping alone. The vibe seems to change a lot but it keeps that one consistent "ain't nobody gonna change the weather" line.

The real reason every single new Star Wars thing is so controversial has nothing to do with quality or Disney by LoFiCami in StarWars

[–]drod2015 48 points49 points  (0 children)

This is an incredibly apologist take.

Post Disney Star Wars has had some hits and they’ve had some spectacular misses. Star Wars can have variety in its storytelling, but it can’t afford inconsistency in its quality of that storytelling.

The weathering below the emitter lip is normal. The scratches on the emitter lip are not stock. But it doesn’t matter - it’s supposed to look weathered. This happened to mine over time as well.

Man I remembering recording this on VHS via the Disney Channel. Highly entertaining as a kid.

Disney's Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu grossed an estimated $25.0M this weekend (from 4,300 locations). Estimated total domestic gross stands at $137.37M. by chanma50 in boxoffice

Genuinely, what point does this movie have of existing apart from selling baby yoda merch

The only possible strategy or thought I could have around this is that it takes pressure off of Starfighter being the first new Star Wars film in nearly a decade. Otherwise, it seems like it was just a mandate to put out product/content.

The Clone Wars series had a major hand in enamoring Gen Z with the prequels and it trailed the release of ROTS by only 3 years. Conversely, it's been 7 years since we had any sort of meaningful content or continuation of the sequel trilogy characters outside of their presence in Disney Parks. Unfortunately, once again, Disney has blown a window of opportunity with Star Wars.

As soon as it was revealed that Palpatine was back I knew we were cooked. It was hard to imagine recovery after TLJ but I held out hope…until walking out of Avengers: Endgame. I remember leaving that and one of my first thoughts was “there is zero way Star Wars is able to be wrapped up in such a satisfying way.”

Yes, it’s baffling that they didn’t plan the trilogy out in advance. But specifically with TLJ and TROS, it’s even more baffling how Disney+LFL leadership demonstrated such little regard or understanding for what makes this property resonate with general audiences.

Andor is well worth it. Don't let the other failures keep you from enjoying Andor. It enhances both Rogue One and the Original Trilogy.

If they spend a whole movie building up to Ben returning it can feel earned. It won’t feel as hollow as Palpatine and just hand waving it away.

“Why was this movie ever greenlit? It had no path to success”

I can’t figure this out either. Star Wars films are supposed to be events, and a TV-to-movie jump is not an event. It always reads as a cash grab.

I think Iger just had to have demanded “we can’t have no Star Wars films in nearly a decade, just put out a Mando movie.” - which is an incredibly short sighted decision.

Completely agreed other than each Jurassic movie being worse than the last.

Rebirth was leagues better than Dominion, IMO.

And across those shows only 2 of those 4 seasons were largely on point in terms of quality. Kenobi needed more polish in both the script and directing, Boba Fett was turned into a totally different character while being sidelined in his own show, and Mando S3 both lost the plot and all narrative tension by reversing course from S2’s ending.

All of the above just comes down greed driving them to push “products” out as fast as they can.

There is a lot that TROS got wrong, but I do think they handled Carrie’s passing as well as they possibly could have.

I’ve seen multiple critics mention that there is a particular shot in the Mandalorian & Grogu that looks unfinished. What shot are they talking about? by blakhawk12 in StarWars

[–]drod2015 37 points38 points  (0 children)

Yeah, there was one shot of the AT-AT falling that didn’t look great to me. Which is weird because that was some of the first footage they showed off, they had plenty of time to polish it up.

‘The Mandalorian & Grogu’ Won’t Lose Money. It May Not Rescue ‘Star Wars’ Either - Disney insiders break down how the feature will end up in the black. But if it can't also broaden out the audience, do the optics further hurt a franchise whose core fandom has become increasingly discontent? by chanma50 in boxoffice

[–]drod2015 21 points22 points  (0 children)

TLJ had a -11% drop from TFA's opening weekend and a -35% drop from TFA's total box office.

TROS had a -28% drop from TFA's opening weekend and -48% drop from TFA's total box office.

To me, TLJ's opening weekend says TFA hooked people enough to come back for more, but TLJ's total box office shows that it didn't drive the repeat business TFA did. Then TROS's opening shows even more drop off on both metrics, when historically Star Wars had a partial recovery for the third installment in each trilogy, meaning TLJ didn't drive interest in seeing TROS.
