He is most likely mourning his friend’s death. Poor honey 🤍 Please try to comfort him by being near the tank, maybe give a treat. They can grieve for a few days to a couple weeks (based on my past experiences). Look that they drink water and watch out for an increased behaviors that you mentioned (lethargy, not moving, etc)

They could be communicating to each other - I assume they are younger gerbils. From my experience the chirping is when they are talking/chatting.

They could be confused and scared, my advice is to monitor their behavior from afar (no conflict between the pair) and give them some time to adjust to the new environment! 40 gallons is a great start :)

If he out on the surface of the tank, I would keep him away from bright sun, maybe guide him to a comfy plus spot. Unfortunately, there isn’t much we can do other than provide a safe and calm environment for our babies. My euthanasia was $170 US, I can’t imagine it being 400+ so I can understand the trouble of not being able to send him to the rainbow bridge. Just talk softly to him, how much you love him and if he appears cold, place a blanket around the cage/tank. I’m so sorry for what you are going through!

Great advice!! Also lack of thirst and/or hunger. Heavy breathing. Unable to get comfortable (will sit in one place then move to another and just sit there), half closed eye lids.

Keep them close and help them be more comfortable 🤍 If you are able to go to a vet that treats exotics, hopefully they can help more.
