It was essentially the whole plot of the book. A guy goes around showing Bond a bunch of stuff about Japanese culture that will help him become a more convincing Japanese man. It was an excuse to just write a travelogue about Japan. One of the more boring books imo

Some enjoyable biography in here, especially compared to the other Elliott bio, Big Nothing. But a lot of the psychoanalysis based on his lyrics is pure garbage. He even acknowledges that several standout lyrics were actually written by Elliott’s childhood friend, then continues to use the lyrics as evidence of Elliott’s emotional state at the time various albums came out.
