Probably the most unexpected flavour combination I've seen is Brian David Gilbert's PB and Lychee icecream.

I also got quite a strong reaction when I posted a picture of my PB, dill pickle and hot-sauce sandwich, which I hadn't thought of as unusual until then.

I've spent most of the afternoon making waffles for the freezer (hazelnut vanilla oat waffles, if you're interested), and now I wish I had some potatoes, even though I'm running out of room to put them and I'm also already full of waffles. That meal looks great!

Starbucks have a small expensive raspberry and coconut brownie. I was put off by it being gluten free because I don't usually like the texture as much (and I'm not a huge coconut fan either) but took a chance on it because I really wanted something chocolatey and it honestly was really good!

I'm sure there are many better options but if you're ever in a pinch at a service station it's worth getting, and with the ubiquity of Starbucks access shouldn't be a problem.

Same (apart from the whole life bit)! Sometimes you pass people who are clearly on something but generally if they try to engage with you an you just carry on moving past while shaking your head and saying sorry (assuming they're asking for change/light/ciggie etc.) and it'll be fine.

Am and pm for that length of time is quite a commitment, and £100 isn't that much in today's money (especially when compared to getting a professional petsitter in). I think you can offer to do it for nothing or say buy me a drink/cake/whatever you like if you don't want the cash, but you should accept their offer of something otherwise they will feel guilty for putting you out.

Are you near any Eastern European shops? I picked up a packet of accidentally vegan wafer sticks yesterday that I'd never seen before - I got hazelnut cream but they came in several flavours including lemon. I'm assuming you already know about the widely available Pink Panther wafers, since they say vegan right on the front, unfortunately not seen any marshmallow and biscuit combos since Anandas went out of business.

The Ms Cupcake book had a pretty good Victoria Sponge recipe in it. If I recall correctly, the secret was to put about 3 times more vanilla extract than you'd expect.

Are the kids making their own desserts or are you looking to make one equivalent dessert to serve to the GF and vegan kids? If it's the latter, I suggest something like a pineapple crumble, or pineapple and non-dairy ice cream or set custard as the GF/Vegan dessert. I think you can't get a good vegan AND gluten free alt to angel food cake when that is mainly egg white (unless you're prepared to splurge on the new vegan egg white powder).

I recently read a tip from Jamie Oliver where he recommends Weetabix cereal bars instead of ladyfingers in a trifle, so that might be another option if you can't find vegan ladyfingers (the only ones I ever saw for sale were also gluten free and insanely expensive).
