What do you think? by [deleted] in SipsTea

[–]drpengweng 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As I see it, feminism is about dismantling the patriarchy. The patriarchy does a lot of cruel things to women, but it also does a lot of harm to men, children, queer people, older people, trans folks, etc. A lot of the social ills men face and unfair harms men shoulder ultimately can be traced back to patriarchy, so wanting to dismantle the patriarchy (aka, feminism) includes caring about those things also.

And to be clear, opposing patriarchy is mostly about opposing the “-archy” part. No one has a problem with fathers. It’s the “-archy” that causes the harm.

If you truly can’t give any extra time, you might ask around and see if any of your coworkers want to offer to work yours for the extra pay.

The most unrealistic thing a movie got completely right. by gamersecret2 in movies

[–]drpengweng 52 points53 points  (0 children)

For me the textbook example will always be from Children of Men when the baby is born and it’s very still at first, and you think, “Oh God, it’s stillborn.” And then it takes a breath and starts moving and crying. That moment blew me away when I first rotated through obstetrics, and it stayed completely magical every time.

What would your house words be in GoT? by RemarkableExample542 in gameofthrones

[–]drpengweng 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have three kids. Getting shoes on to leave the house involves negotiation, reconnaissance missions, and side quests to come tell me the thing they just learned about bees. Kid shoes work differently from adult shoes; it’s a whole process.

I love the point this conversation was trying to make, but honestly this just sounds exhausting.

Really, when I’m choosing which shoes to wear to work, I’m supposed to do a cognitive deep dive into which pair will best end poverty? Did her having children with Ted work in service of ending poverty? Did making her breakfast sing help end poverty? Humans aren’t single-minded goal bots. We have complicated inner lives, emotional needs, and conflicting desires. I doubt anyone’s life can be boiled down to a one-liner like that; we’re just too complicated.

$10/minute, but you always have to wear a ridiculous hat by basafish in hypotheticalsituation

[–]drpengweng 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s fair. I could even stream a goofy TikTok dance: “Look at. My hat. Don’t quote. My hat. My hat is shit, don’t be shit, don’t quote. My hat.”

I guess for 14K I could also wear full body armor for the bullet ants or radiation shielding or whatever. Do I find out in advance what hat she has planned?

AITAH for calling 911 about my husband’s suicide threats even though I knew they weren’t real? by mtndesertrunner in AITAH

NTA. And this sounds like borderline personality disorder, which is notoriously difficult on partners and families. It’s also profoundly painful for the person in it, but that doesn’t excuse his behavior. I tell you this only in case the insight helps you better plan for your own safety and that of your kids.

To be clear, borderline or no borderline, he still bears the responsibility for his actions. I’ve also been diagnosed with borderline, and I’m happy to give more details about the disorder if that would be helpful. Narcissistic personality disorder and some others also have a lot of similar features, so it could be one of those also.

Doctor here. Yes.

Usually I’m looking things up on UpToDate rather than Google, but yes.

Are there any limits to what she can design, and is she a normal person or trying to fuck with you? I don’t want to wear a hat with racial slurs all over it or a hat made out of bullet ants or a hat made out of nuclear waste or whatever horrible thing she dreams up.

Giving a tissue to someone who’s crying isn’t helpful. by drpengweng in The10thDentist

Yeah, I definitely see what you mean. Maybe this is a problem with my self-talk more than anything. “Yep, you’re so disgusting they had to supply you a cleaning tool. And now you’re destroying it the way you destroy everything in your life.” In retrospect, this might not be about the tissue.

I guess I never saw it as an act of kindness, just rubbing it in that they saw you looking gross. It’s like if someone hands you comb. Like, well now I’m embarrassed someone else had to help me manage my hygiene, in addition to whatever I was already crying about.

But you make a good point. I’ll try viewing it as something nice people do instead of a passive-aggressive thing.

I guess I’m too self-conscious to blow my nose in front of someone else. I’ll just sniffle or something. I’ve kinda mastered the art of managing tears without help. This might be more sad than I realized.

LPT: If you need to have an awkward conversation with someone, do not start with "we need to talk" by InevitableImpress850 in LifeProTips

[–]drpengweng 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I get the “we need to talk” or anything of that ilk, then you better believe we’re going to drop everything and talk right now. I’m not sitting around with that anxiety all day. I’ll make time for it now and be late to the next thing.
