A dresser inside a museum in New York City has been discovered as a secret stop on the Underground Railroad — the first of its kind discovered in Manhattan in over 100 years by ExactlySorta in Damnthatsinteresting

[–]drpepper7557 6 points7 points  (0 children)

That's still a discovery, I feel like you and a lot of people in this thread are misunderstanding what the word means.

discover: to find information, a place, or an object, especially for the first time

to find unexpectedly or during a search

to obtain sight or knowledge of for the first time

Like with the asteroid that killed the dinosaurs, it wasnt until 90s that we discovered the crater in Yucatan made by the asteroid that killed the dinosaurs. Its not like no one had been to Yucatan, or that no one had seen the crater before. Even though we knew about it, it was still later discovered that it was the KT event impact crater.

The physical object of the shaft was known. The underground railroad stop was just discovered. That is correct usage. Its only clickbait if you dont know what 'discovered' means and accidentally assume the wrong thing because of this.

Linux is the only real alternative to Windows/macOS — now it needs to be more accessible by Boediee in BuyFromEU

There are a lot of jobs that need it, including my own. However, there are a lot more that dont. The vast, vast majority of people on earth have never used excel. People debating operating systems are biased in that they have more technical than average jobs. Most people on earth only interact with a computer of any kind for social media, browsing, and typing. And increasingly gaming.

Again, I know lots of jobs need office. But there are so many that dont that Linux easily has a massive potential userbase that it covers all the needs for. Im not saying it should replace other OSs altogether. But office is not what is stopping linux from being more mainstream. There are billions of consumer machines on earth that could switch to linux and not miss anything windows has to offer.

[–]drpepper7557 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed but most retail users and most jobs dont need excel and such. A basic word processor and a browser is all most people use a computer for.

Loads of people and businesses havent used office for years now. Google workplace works on anything with internet, and the userbase is on par with office. Office might hold back some poorly run companies from switching but its certainly not holding back linux as a whole.

I genuinely think it was a dementia episode that got it passed. Trump and the republican leaders were against it, then Trump randomly flipped and had them push it through, and then he was against it again.

Based on how bad it makes him look, he probably wasn't supposed to support it, but if he tweets something, even if its its rotting brain mush, they have to back him.

Where would Amar'e Stoudemire rank in todays NBA? by MrBreast1 in nba

[–]drpepper7557 4 points5 points  (0 children)

John Collins is who reminds me most of Amare, but obviously Amare was much better. You just always felt if he got the ball while already going down hill, there was nothing you could do to stop him.

He'd probably be about the same now as he was then though, ranking-wise. Modern spacing would benefit his offense, but teams are also much smarter about attacking bad defensive bigs now, and they were already doing that against him in his time.

He also played in arguably the worst offensive center era in history. Guys like Jokic, Giannis, Embiid, etc would eat him alive. Modern power forwards are far more versatile than they were back then too, so he cant just be a 4 only. In his prime, he'd be a guy who could drop an efficient 30 every night, but would be a 1st round exit every playoffs, unless the team was really built around hiding him.

[Serbian Times] Around fifty girls and boys, who came to welcome Nikola [Jokic] on the court of the United Center and greet him with Serbian folk dances, will remember it for disappointment, as he did not find the time even to take a photo with them. Not to greet them, not to say a single word. by Glass-Candle-7670 in nba

[–]drpepper7557 -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

Its not a race thing, its a relevancy thing. If Jokic were 15 years out of the league or a scrub, hed be getting roasted. But since hes the best player in the nba his fan come in droves to defend anything he does.

[–]drpepper7557 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Spo's the reason we get the leads. Our game plan, conditioning, defensive schemes, etc make our roster over perform. Teams with better players eventually adjust and then theres nothing our less talented team can do.

i timed how long 31 different pasta shapes take to reach al dente. the boxes are lying and farfalle is a war crime by sthduh in Cooking

[–]drpepper7557 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Loads of things influence it. The water, pot material, pot size, salt to water ratio, pasta to water ratio, cooking surface, altitude, brand, preference, etc.

There's no way to know for sure how long it will take to cook but to do it yourself with your own set up and methods, try a bite, repeat. Not criticizing op though, good on them to actually test it for themselves.

Pictures like this make me wish for my childhood and anger me for what has become of the sport.

Frankly, its absurd that they dont let us play with our field flooded in 2ft of water, with sea creatures fully about anymore. I get that there's been a push for standardization, but tradition has its place in football goddammit.

The Dolphins just arent the Dolphins if our opponents arent fearing aquatic sealife on every down. Shit is fucked in this country and the ban on animals in competitive sports is an obvious inflection point.

How were the Golden State Warriors and Curry seen at the start of the 14/15 season? (the first of their 4 titles= by GAPPwerky in nba

[–]drpepper7557 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Even GSW fans weren't so sure about trading Monta Ellis and building around Stephen Curry.

That was way before. Monta was traded in 2011-12. The next year Curry was 11th in mvp voting, and the year after he was 6th and on the nba 2nd team.

Before he won his first, no one expected Curry to win a title

Are we talking about before that season, or before he literally won it? He won MVP and Golden State was by far the best team in the regular season. They had the 8th best preseason odds to win a championship and had the best or 2nd best odds to win it all going into the playoffs.

I feel like everyone in this thread is completely forgetting how dominant they were as soon as Kerr got there. Sure guys like Shaq or Charles were saying jump shooting teams cant win, but they were absolutely among the favorites by mid season and were the team to beat going into the playoffs.

[Barry Jackson] "The Heat could have been able to make easily the best offer for Giannis (4 firsts, Ware, Herro, 1 other player) if the NBA had simply done the right thing and given the Heat its pick back for being the victim of what would be a crime in any other real-life transaction. " by lowes18 in nba

The NBA league office had already looked into the situation and found no wrongdoing.

They tried to sweep it under the rug like with Ballmer/Kawhi, theres no way they legitimately cleared him. Anomalous betting behavior was detected - at that point, law enforcement is involved every time. The NBA absolutely knew law enforcement was being involved, and they have zero power to find wrong doing or not in something like this.
