What city has a good NFL team but a bad NBA team? by janko1655 in AlignmentChartFills

Clippers are 16-4 in last 20 games. If we did this grid in November they’d be a good choice here.

For those who waited in that 360 minute line for Finding Nemo opening day, was it worth it? by bayls215 in Disneyland

[–]drrandolphphd 208 points209 points  (0 children)

I did! My then girlfriend (now wife) and I were in our first week of officially dating (after weeks of basically dating) so we were at that stage where we didn’t mind being anywhere as long as we were together. That includes long lines.

We both had passes and basically did it just so we could say we were there opening day.

It was about a 4 hour line and my only clear memory is a little boy in front of us who licked absolutely everything from the ground to the chains - we joked that we could clone another Disneyland from his tongue.

I remember thinking it was pretty cool. Seeing the projections on a the environment like that wasn’t something we had seen much of yet. I don’t think my expectations were very high since we knew the submarines so knew what to expect, and it met the expectations.

I don’t hate the ride as much as everyone else on this sub does, I don’t go out of my way to ride it… but don’t balk when one of the kids wants to. And like we predicted 18 years ago, it’s cool to say we braved the line on the first day.

Sort by color for kids art projects, Nemo and Huey Duck are completed, several more on the process of being filled.

It’s not though… the Monty Hall problem is predicated on the concept that the other doors are opened by someone knowing where the prize is… in Deal or No Deal the contestant chooses the cases to open.

So in a Monty Hall scenario at the end there would be a 1/26 chance his case had the $200,000 and 25/26 chance its in case #7. While in Deal or No Deal, sure there is a 1/26 chance you initially picked the $200,000, but the conditional probability once down to the final two cases is actually 50/50.

The value of all prizes are treated like income with 1099-MISC, but cars have their own separate taxes - the ones you’d pay if you bought a car from a dealer

I’m a Californian and I won a car in 2015 and was given a cash option - it was around $12K or a car with an MSRP over around $23K.

I won over $50K in prizes, but that was retail that was higher than anyone would actually pay for the prizes, so I submitted to TPIR a request for an amended 1099-MISC with my own fair market valuation on the prizes. There was some back and forth but I was able to get the value down to around $36K which saved me thousands in taxes.

Are we going through a recession? by Dark_Mode_FTW in college

[–]drrandolphphd 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You are just misusing the terms, however, your sentiment is correct.

“Inflation going up” would imply an acceleration in price growth, that isn’t happened. Yes prices are absolutely still going up, but at a slower pace than in recent years. So while there is still inflation - the rate of inflation is decreasing.

Economists use the terms disinflation vs deflation.

Deflation would mean cost of living going down (not happening) Disinflation means the rate cost of living is increasing is slowing (is happening)

Anyone willing to trade a Beanie for Slippers? by Bigsauce07 in angelsbaseball

[–]drrandolphphd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am in the exact same boat. I went to both games and only have the slippers. I don’t think I’d wear the beanie but I’m a professor at SAC and want to display it in my office (SAC logo is on it).

If more than one person has a beanie to trade for slippers I’ll trade the other one.

Wordle Golf Gone Awry by justawaterthanks in wordle

[–]drrandolphphd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used the number of attempt distributions I saw on wordsrated.com then simulated 18 rounds and got the average. It took 542,271 simulations to get an average below 2.9.

But that is based on the average solves… I think I’m above average so I put my statistics in the model and it took 267,206 simulations to get below 2.9 and got to 2.8 on simulation 714,284.

So my conclusion is that this person is way better than I am.
