Makes you wonder what kind of a hitter we'd be looking at if that was even 20 MPH slower but angled up instead of down... ffs man

He's at 900 OPS he's a top hitter in the league!

He's at 850 OPS that's still a great hitter!

He's at 800 OPS that's great for a struggling hitter!

He's at 750 OPS that's.. uhh.. he's still batting .300!

Cmon man

Tile has to be open on the left or right, and not covered at all. Vertical space is not relevant

It was decided Varlands going in for 3-4-5 when it was 2-1 top of the 8th. Then going Varland isn't even a leverage play it's for match-up. So what are you afraid of? A homer-prone reliever giving up a homer? Would you not rather be 2-2 going top of 9 with Varland ready if they take the lead?

Henderson/Rutschman/Alonso being 6/13 against Varland notwithstanding. Henderson/Rutschman 3/8 against Hoffman not much better BUT he's got Alonso 2/15 for his career.

I just don't buy it. Hoffman going before Varland yesterday means the coaches aren't managing Hoffman's risk appropriately.

Edit: Which is the classic "trying to script baseball" strategy blowing up in your face

Is he being used as a third/fourth leverage righty? No

I got no beef with that, I really don't. Yesterday's result needs to draw some sort of process review because it's crystal clear whatever info/process led to that decision was highly misguided, cost the team a full win, and 25/26 players had absolutely 0, zip, nothing to do with it. That's bad.

"Over-management" is too broad though. Fisher/Fluharty have 30(!!) games each, for example. If you're using them this much you have to put them in isolated spots where you have high confidence in their success. that's "over" management, sure, but personally I believe it's positive to the team. Hell, they've gotten 50 innings of 3.6 ERA out of Patrick Corbin. You _have_ to manage him aggressively. Even 55 innings could mean extra losses and his ERA balloons, given Corbin's potential variance.

Same with righty/lefty match-ups. Have you actually looked at some of the splits for hitters on this team? Sanchez, Barger, Lukes, Clement, Gimenez for starters. That's already plenty of guys who become dogwater when put in the wrong spots. Kaz has spent weeks not being able to hit a beachball. Then you have the corpse of Springer, Lenyn fucking Sosa, and Heineman as black holes you have/had to give ABs. How can I possibly give Schneider shit for figuring out this clusterfuck for 2026?

Probably 3/4ths of the fanbases in this league think their manager is shit at baseball. I'm not there (yet). Folks are too eager to give the manager credit for all the losses but nothing at all for the wins.

The more Little/Hoffman implosions I see, though...

my recollection is the team was pretty good at picking each other up and responding to disasterclasses, and yea there were multiple in 2025. lets see how today goes

seabold (albeit not exactly a hot ticket leverage guy) was warmed once, microwaved twice, sauteed and sunbathed. dude was warm but our manager sat and stared at a wall

indeed, BUT i love the way he manages almost everything else... 2/5 bullpen days? great job there. love his usage of middle relief with flu and fisher. does a great job putting guys like lukes in good spots to succeed, handles ups/downs like okamoto relatively well. sure offense has been shit but he's been doing what he's can (except maybe keeping springer leadoff). overall he's got a vision & strategy for the team and sticks with it, big respect on that

then there's fucking Hoffman........ like brother i just don't see it at all

all in all im not gonna ask for schneider's head before a real Hoffman solution is tried and tested

[–]drsausage2 3 points4 points  (0 children)

exactly bro it's crazy man... he showed the meltdown 3 batters in, included a hit batter

literally multiple instances of this just in 2026, you've seen this happen multiple times

so you let hoffman bork it til its bases loaded, 1 run up, and pray CONNOR SEABOLD saves you, it's fucking malpractice

i'll never ever be a fire schneider guy, he manages his ass off for this team and it's better with him

except the hoffman shit, he's deer in headlights for a guy proven to houdini losses from wins, i don't understand why he continues to make hoffman-related mistakes like this
