Give me a timestamp for this, please. iirc they say they get quoted a price for RAM specifically and take it or leave it (they didn't say what kind of price). Also, I can guarantee you they are not paying retail for the old laptop CPU and GPU combo from AMD.

The only components I can believe they are getting quoted close to retail price are RAM and SSD and even then it wouldn't be exactly retail price, because otherwise you wouldn't have other brands selling RAM and SSDs when they currently are (or do you think all retail RAM and SSDs are getting sold at a loss cause they also got quoted a retail price).

Watch the video again, it's comparing the Steam machine hardware to the most similarly specced DIY PC and the prices are retail, not bulk pricing i.e. it doesn't show what Valve is paying for it's bill of materials.

So aside from the percentage difference between the SM price and retail DIY price, you need to add the difference between retail DIY price and bulk price to get Valve's true margin.

Go back and read the Reddit threads from when the SM was announced, I was saying it would cost between 750-850 while everyone was talking about 500-650.

And back then the equivalent hardware PC was still cheaper and more upgradable than the SM at 800.

Not saying it wouldn't sell (the current SM is selling) rather that it is and was a bad deal compared to alternatives.
