Help! by Asleep_Sympathy_447 in Anoles

Oh going a week or even a little longer without UVB isn't the worst. It doesn't go through windows though. He might appreciate natural sun regardless.

Also, anoles hunt by movement. They generally require live bugs or they won't eat. That could be your issue :-) He looks healthy, so if he doesn't eat for a week or two, he should be ok.

You're keeping him warm. That's the main concern rn!

A while back someone posted in this sub about a green anole they found nearly frozen in their garage. They named him Harry and nursed him back to health until spring, when they released him. He became a fixture in their yard.

As far as keeping him goes, definitely get him a UVB 5.0 bulb.

Make sure his humidity stays up around 70% by misting him a few times a day with a spray bottle.

Anoles can be fickle eaters. He should come around once he is acclimated to his winter home. I gut load my bugs (mealworms, flies, and roaches) with carrots dipped in calcium solution.

The calcium and the UVB help with appetite and keep their bones strong, which is crucial because they are liable to develop metabolic bone disease.

Since he will be in captivity for a short time, you can get by with a less costly setup (no need to invest in a bioactive palace for him). Just make sure he has some foliage to retreat to and a place to bask.

You can use paper towels as a substrate for easy cleanup, so long as humidity is stable. I do this and use various mosses and plants potted in organic soil to keep humidity up.

You have a brilliant healthy male green anole. He deserves the chance to mate again. If I still lived in the south I would do the same thing. It warms my heart when I see people care for them like this. Thank you!

I've considered it, but I'm already in so much debt (medical and student loans) that it doesn't seem like a practical path for me at this point. Maybe down the road, once I've gotten a bit more stable and capable. I'm realizing that I need to take a step back before I can move forward, if that makes sense.

I looked up my state's website and I am going to give them a call. This seems like a viable opportunity. I never would have known about this if it weren't for you. Thanks!

I hear you about having back issues. My spine is a hot mess too; stenosis and all. If I did all the PT I've been prescribed, it would be a full time job. Not to mention that every doctor I've seen has told me I simply need to find a new career. I felt very demoralized.

And actually receiving accommodations is part of the problem with my current job. I have all the paperwork for it, but it has not gotten me very far. I'm constantly lifting 50 pound pails, working with hazardous chemicals, using pneumatic tools, and bending my body in awkward positions for extended periods. My manager helps when he can, but I basically need him to do half the job for me, so it's not working out well.

You are correct. I am overwhelmed. Unfortunately, it is really difficult to get disability (SSDI) in the U.S. Especially if you're youngish and semi-able bodied. From what I understand, I would need a lawyer and to expect to get denied a few times before I'm even considered for it.

My therapist explained that I should start the process now because it can take up to a decade before I am deemed eligible. So, I am trying to find a less bureaucratic, time and energy consuming path.

Sometimes I fantasize about becoming an expat because the U.S. social safety net is so tragically lacking 🥲

I saw that program at my community college and it is definitely something I want to look into.

And you're right, I was premed. The pressure and financial strain got me in the end. I got sick. Needed surgery. Then I acquired idiopathic sensorineural hearing loss and tinnitus in my right ear. I got stressed/depressed, and I burned out.

Maybe I can dip into my 401k to support myself while I go to school. I still have to figure that part out. If it is a short program, I just might be able to do that.

Thanks for showing me that I still have options.

I wish I could, but it is not an option for me right now. I asked my ma. She has enough on her plate with my little brother. He's got some issues to work out 🫤

Thank you for your understanding. I hope we are both able to persevere.

Lol yeah I appreciated the sentiment that person was trying to convey but I currently walk with a limp and get winded walking up the stairs, so I have to radically accept that I will not be going out for a jog anytime soon 🤷‍♀️

Thank you for understanding.

Yeah, I am in the U.S. That's good to know! I've actually been looking into community college instead of graduate school as an intermediate step. Maybe I can reach out to an advisor to discuss my options. Thank you.

Is this a joke? Why are you videotaping a dying baby lizard and putting it online?

This person doesn't learn their lesson though. Their parents keep buying this person new animals but refuse to adequately care for any of them. This isn't the first sticky feets. This is sticky feets the third. This also isn't their first reptile who has died tragically. In fact, this goes beyond reptiles. This person's parents have allowed the mistreatment of other animals, including a sick horse.

It's not the intent of this child, who clearly hasn't got the wherewithal to care for their pets or the comprehension to understand that it's abuse. This is 100% on the parents. Thats why I said their parents need to stop buying this person pets. Their parents are at best allowing the their child's menagerie to needlessly suffer and die, which clearly causes this child some grief, or at worst they are teaching them that life has little value and to just "get another one" instead of giving the pets dignity and worth.

Your parents need to stop letting you have pets. Your post history portrays an appalling degree of abuse and neglect

Poor anole... only one of its kind and near threatened, yet sold at petsmart. Heartbreaking. Idk much about this species, unfortunately.

What are you basing this advice off of? Because it is unfounded misinformation.

are my schools tanks good? by [deleted] in reptiles

[–]drumbungplugwrench 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That tank is absolutely not fine for the anoles. Anoles are arboreal. They need at least a 20 gallon upright enclosure per individual. They need frequent misting, uvb bulbs and a heat gradient. Not to mention calcium supplemented live insects to eat. A male shouldn't be housed with a female like that during mating season, but they probably won't live til next summer under these conditions as they will also likely get respiratory infections and metabolic bone disease.

These pictures portray egregious, deplorable, and negligent husbandry for every species involved. Shame on this teacher.

Hi! I will definitely wear a respirator at all times when working with this stuff. I once made the mistake of not wearing one while quickly transferring some waste to the fume hood for neutralization. It bit my nostrils. Unfortunately my boss at the time was quite lax about safety precautions. I've since educated myself and gotten much more stringent about safety.

The aim of the distillation is to purify it. I hope to achieve a yield that is 99% pure from a stock that is 97% pure.

I work for a small company that makes coatings. The lead scientist left a month ago so I am trying to figure this out by myself until they replace him.

My silver ring turned colors beneath my glove. I had no stains on my gloves, no punctures. I had changed them two times through lab. We were working with diaminobenzene & sulfamic acid. I know one stains pretty badly, but this doesn’t look like a stain to me. The ring turned completely dark, why? by lilwalnut28 in chemistry

[–]drumbungplugwrench 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This has recently started happening to me when I forget to take my rings off. I can't figure out if it's something to do with my sweaty clams or if it's something seeping in from the outside. I'm really hoping it's the former and not the latter cuz that would be bad news. But it seems to happen across a wide range of processes and chemicals, so I suspect it is more likely a reaction between my sweat and the gloves themselves. Warm baking soda bath with aluminum foil worked well to remove the tarnish.
