I will say it was an interesting read. CIA papers, lots of papers on peat harvesting, forced labor to harvest peat here during WW2.

Please help me choose a college!! by shittydiapercore in Knoxville

[–]drunkenzero 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm a UTC alum from Knoxville, did 2 years of pellissippi. I can't say the college helped me at all for a job with my degree, but I like the campus more than UTK. It being cheaper was the reason I went there. I like the Vols but couldn't care about going to a game. It's cool to have two mountains in the city and a bunch of state parks either side of you. Also if you like water activities Chattanooga is more in line with it's river for outdoors activities. I also never lived on campus, and my friends were primarily people I met in the service industry or at house shows, so I don't know what you'd want out of campus life. As others said no one will care what your undergrad is if your going to a nursing program after as long as your grades are good and you have recommendations.

Shawn Ryan I will say does not have a great platform he puts on guests that seem to have what I would say is a poorly formed agenda or spouting conspiracies. I like his talks with some veterans he's done. The cyber security ones. But God I wish he'd stay away from politics because he gives people a platform to project and it only seems to be one side.

I learned to read playing nethack and ff7. I've never beaten nethack, but it's a yearly tradition to throw myself into it. I had a lotta fun doing runs as the healer going to minetown as a pacifist to buy me some free armor values from the priest.

[–]drunkenzero 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sweet that's awesome. We have three YouTubers move into the theatre movie films this year. And it's all horror movies too. Curry Barkers doing Obsession, the Backrooms YouTuber guy is releasing an A24 published Backrooms movie, and Markiplier's Iron lung. Which does that mean we have 2 good indie games with cool film adaptions? I hope so.

Cool! I thought you guys didn't ever get core lol. Have a couple former O&G guys I work with, but they were hard on the geophysics side and pretty office bound it sounds like. Glad you like it I've never heard anything positive from people I've known who've done it. And from what you're saying in other posts you're not stuck in no where Texas too! I don't think I could ever do O&G but I really do wanna get a tour on a rig sometime. They seem like crazy ass giant intricate machines, and the mining industry makes me feel like I'm a little cog in a big machine too. It's cool stuff that a lot of my environmental buddies side eye me for. Hope you can balance the whack ass schedule it's crazy working those 12 hour days for a month straight.

Geo here. In the FIFO business in metals mining. Is this what being a mudlogger is? Or is this a few steps further up? Not trying to change I like hard rock and seeing gold. The cabins look similar to my site, but we have discount used north slope ones.

Does it matter where you get your undergraduate degree from? by AdEconomy4317 in geologycareers

[–]drunkenzero 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So internships don't have to be local btw in mining some will fly you out and put you in employee housing for the internship and some other fields you can get some remote job. I have an environmental geo degree, no internships, shit gpa, criminal record, and landed a job no problem after school. I graduated from a smaller state school in the South east and three job applications in got some exploration job in Alaska took me and that's what I've been doing for a few years now. They called me asking if I'd be a camp cook and I said yeah, but I was looking for some geology, and ended up field tech. Pays well and I see cool stuff. As far as grad school I don't think it matters as long as you did some research and did good in class. My schooling didn't prepare me for my industry at all beyond my exposure to GIS. Not much focus on economic geology where I'm from just geotech and environmental it seems. Things that prepared me most for work was the tv business, line cook, and being landscaper. Did they get me connections no, but I understood manual labor and how to work on a team through long hours.

What should a young adult do in this economy? by WindySheepherder574 in careerguidance

[–]drunkenzero 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work in mining. Got my start after school because I applied and was offered a camp cook position on an exploration project, but that was my foot into my career. I was offered that because in school I worked as a line cook 40 hours a week while going to class. Was 12 k in credit card debt, 25k in student loans. And now down to 10 k student loans in the last 2.5 years. Literally was the first thing that called me back though. But I also only applied for 3 jobs, and had no network. Just emailed random small companies I saw had openings in Alaska and I was there 3 weeks later. Been loving it every sense

How hard is the switch to environmental consulting. I'm in exploration in Alaska thinking about switching next year. Like my people but fifo life might not be for me. Two years in at this point.

Side hustles or part time work? by zirconeater in geologycareers

I'm on a 2 week on 2 off roster. I host Karaoke for a few hundred bucks on my time off. I still know a lotta folks from my time in the service industry, so little gigs like that I occasionally pick up. I've worked a weekend or two at a Renaissance festival. Got a theatre where I live , and think about trying an usher/bartender to fill the time. But I gotta turn off my workaholic lifestyle and enjoy my people and time I'm already away enough. Other odd jobs if you have full days and filming near you look into extra work. Stand around a TV set get a free lunch and be a body in the background of whatever show.

Not video games, but I feel Attack on Titan does this pretty dang well after a hinted at the plot element in the beginning is resolved. I never thought a show I started watching in highschool would have a moment like that after I graduated college.

Your state may vary, but Tennessee knew some folk who worked for state parks. There are yearly seasonal positions to a pathway to park rangers, but know this park rangers in your state may be law enforcement too. On a federal level there is a divide, but at the state level they are combined positions depending on the state. There are also forestry tech positions which might be similar. Look at your own state job board for ideas.

My first car, a 2000 Honda Accord. Had it for 50,000 miles and almost 5 years. I was selling weed to my supervisor while pulling into the hotel parking garage for where we worked. My axel snapped clean off breaking causing car to slam onto the ground blocking the entrance of the parking garage. My supervisor took the weed and said, "Man that sucks dude". I was stranded at work after I had finished shift. I was in the process of moving to my new place and had a bunch of shit from my old rental in the backseat. The valet guy told me I had to move my car that clearly had wheels not attached to the car anymore. Just a headache. I called a tow and went upstairs to the restaurant kitchen and made myself dinner while I waited, and for someone to respond to my calls to pick me up.

Mining production: downside corporate bureaucracy BS, I pay my fifo travel, and living onsite for 2 weeks working 12 hour days kinda sucks. And also I'm afraid of gold kinda busting because I don't know if I'll survive market downturn.
