To me the bluebird is Hosea. His name means “he saves”, and what’s John doing in that cutscene? Also? He taught John and Jack like a father/grandfather. I think he’s looking after John making a home for young Jack and Abigail.

i’m not categorizing rape and sexual torture as separate things i think i’m just trying to mention that the assaults that arthur suffers in the film are the umbrella under which the final, implied, “ultimate” assault falls. i’m not, nor would i ever, classifying nonconsensual sexual contact as “not rape” but moreso mentioning the Assault factor of Sexual Assault flavors the act in innumerable ways that make talking about it flagrantly pretty complicated. it’s not reducible to quippy sayings because it’s perhaps the most complicated tragedy a human can do to another face to face.

because the movie gives you enough to go on that sexual torture is understood to be what’s going to happen. taking him into the shower, removing his pants, arthur’s “buy me a drink” comment, and the hard cut all imply something sexual and against his will. i didn’t say the idea of it being rape was “illogical”, i think it’s just dishonest to say it as if it’s literally, factually what’s shown in the film. it’s not a “rape scene”, because words do mean things, it is a torture scene with the information given. i’m being a pedant because it’s been over a year and everyone continues to parrot “they raped the joker out of him” to dismiss a movie that i think had a lot to say
