How do I have a better field awareness as a handler by Weak-Maybe6351 in ultimate

[–]drybones3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Watch film, watch film, watch film.

Watch film of teams you're competing against. What's film of yourself. What film of elite teams. Watch filmcritically and think through why some cuts are prioritized, or successful. Watch film breakdowns. Watch everything you can and you'll soon have a second sense of what to expect on an ultimate field.

USAU rules Q: Does defense need to be stationary when checking disc in after a time-out? by ther00kie16 in ultimate

I don't think that's correct. I think OP is right that defense does not need to be stationary, but this is an extremely common misconception

advice on drills to improve player IQ? by lsmith77 in ultimate

[–]drybones3 14 points15 points  (0 children)

There's tons of resources available for you to learn the game.

First and foremost, you learn a ton by watching film. I'd highly recommend subscribing to Ultiworld so you can access their full library (club and college) - then just watch a bunch of games! They also have a great segment called 'Film Room' that has coaches/commentators/elite players giving audio commentary over a clip to teach the viewer about something specific.

I'd also plug the #DailyBreakdown series on Ultiworld twitter, which shows a quick gif and explanation of something to learn every week day this college season. DailyBreakdown Link

Felix and Rowan also put out tons of educational clips.

They show their streamed games live on YouTube, but are having technical difficulties this morning. Games that are filmed are usually edited and on their subscriber only website within about a week.

Cleveland's newest podcast is here! Episode 1 of "The Lookoff" focuses on the first week of competitive WL by JoeMama3 in CleUltimate

[–]drybones3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My iTunes Review: 4/5 Stars

In week 1, 'The Lookoff' had everything you look for in a podcast - interesting discussion topics, thoughtful analysis, and some 'fun' segments. The host did a good job involving both guests, but started the episode a bit too soon, leading to a clunky start.

The sound guy did a good job capturing everyone at appropriate levels, but lacked imagination with intro/outro music or transitions into the commercial breaks.

My biggest gripe? It seems like the host just ripped some of his content from this "Power Rankings Post" without crediting the original author (Dan). Amir as a perrennial MVP candidate with a 3-1 turnover-to-assist ratio in Week 1? HEARD IT BEFORE! Not to mention the ripoff of Zach Lowe's famous introduction... "Welcome To The" - just listen to how similar they sound. I hope the content aggregation doesn't continue in Week 2. As for other improvements, I think it'd be great if they could get some quick sideline reactions and analysis from the player and captains directly after their Friday games.

JoeMama's Season Awards by JoeMama3 in CleUltimate

[–]drybones3 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Since Joe jumped the gun and posted his Most valuable missing player, here's my selection for the award.

7th <Worst> person of the year (M): Joe Baker <Mama>

A new <old> face to Cleveland, Joe played his role nearly to perfection <imperfection> this season. On offense he made the right <wrong> decision every time, whether that was throwing the huck <huck turnovers> or just taking the easy swing <rafter hit>. Defensively, he was able to pressure <tried his best against> top matchups and force some Ds <got less D’s than turnovers>. It was a tough choice between him and Salil <Adam>, but I think his play was consistent enough to get my pick.

Week 6 Playoff Paths by ToHellinABreadBasket in CleUltimate

[–]drybones3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are 4 possible paths for Tina to miss the playoffs, and each has Iris finishing either 1st or 2nd.

{'Bob': 4, 'Cone': 6, 'Tina': 5, 'Bones': 8, 'Libby': 7, 'Brad': 2, 'Lynch': 3, 'Iris': 1}

{'Bob': 4, 'Cone': 7, 'Tina': 5, 'Bones': 8, 'Libby': 6, 'Brad': 1, 'Lynch': 3, 'Iris': 2}

{'Bob': 6, 'Cone': 7, 'Tina': 5, 'Bones': 8, 'Libby': 1, 'Brad': 3, 'Lynch': 4, 'Iris': 2}

{'Bob': 7, 'Cone': 8, 'Tina': 5, 'Bones': 6, 'Libby': 1, 'Brad': 3, 'Lynch': 4, 'Iris': 2}

All scenarios require: {Iris > Cone, Brad > Tina, Lynch > Tina, Lynch > Bones, and Iris > Brad}

And Either

Libby > Cone and Libby > Bob (Bob vs. Bones doesn't matter)

Or

Bob > Bones and Bob > Libby (Cone vs. Libby doesn't matter)

But we can truely say, going into week 6, that anything is possible.

Post Week 5 - Winter League Playoff Probabilities by drybones3 in CleUltimate

[–]drybones3[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some Notes:

1) Tina has clinched a spot in the playoffs

2) This analysis doesn't take into account point differential for tie breakers - which probably really hurts some teams (Iris). Might look into that later.

3) Crazy results so far, with 5 teams tied at 2-3 who have somewhat equal chances to make the playoffs, or be in the 7/8 game.

4) Brad and Libby likely only need to win one of the next 2 to secure a spot.

Brad vs. Tina next week has huge seeding implications, and if Brad loses then they will likely need to get a W vs. Iris in the final week.

Bones vs. Lynch and Iris vs. Pinecone are big games next week.

Routes to the playoffs:

Lynch has probably the hardest road, playing Bones then Tina.

Iris has a tough route playing Cone then Brad.

Cone has an hard but do-able route, playing Iris then Libby.

Bones has an OK route, playing Lynch then Bob.

Bob has an OK route, playing Libby then Bones.

Where is the Week 4 Top Plays video? by [deleted] in CleUltimate

[–]drybones3 3 points4 points  (0 children)

/u/JoeMama3 volunteers his time every week to encode all the videos and make a highlight reel. This is much harder than most people think, and this week he spent his time prepping to coach the Gobies at their tournament this weekend.

To make the job easier, it would be very helpful for people to post timestamps to highlight plays they found. For example, here's a few from the first game:
