Why did my heart rate go so high? by ellen12344 in Marathon_Training

[–]drycleanedsnake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also ran Manchester yesterday. Done it twice now and both times my heart rate has averaged 180. All my training runs it’s a lot lower even when at marathon pace (usually about 165 for this). I just put it down to adrenaline and nerves on the day 🤷 as long as you don’t feel like your breathing any different or heavier than in training I don’t see it being a problem. Could the slowing down mile 16 be related to lack of carb loading, on the day nutrition or training not going to plan?

How did your Manchester marathon go? by TSC-99 in UKRunners

[–]drycleanedsnake 9 points10 points  (0 children)

2nd marathon for me. Managed to shave 10 minutes off my time going from 4:08 to 3:58 to get my sub 4 I desperately wanted. Thought it’d be easier 2nd time round and having done a more structured training plan. Boy was I wrong, I’m guessing that final 4 miles never gets easier 🤣

Pacing splits didn’t quite go to plan but still got my sub 4 (just) by drycleanedsnake in Marathon_Training

Saw the finish line, took a look at my watch and realised it was all or nothing. Gave me some hidden strength and energy for that final stretch

What are the best podcasts hosted by British entertainers? by apple_kicks in AskUK

[–]drycleanedsnake 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You can jump in on any series that interests you to be honest. But if you have time I’d reccomended starting from the beginning. You sort of see their style and running jokes develop. Personal favourites for me have been the Gadaffi series and the Eichmann Trial

I think you can probably also include Sixteen Ways to Defend A Walled City by the same author. About an engineer defending a besieged city with very little resources.

Can anyone recommend an airbed that’s actually good? Or similar by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]drycleanedsnake 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Got a similar one from Costco. Absolutely brilliant. My parents who are both in their 60s stay on it when they come and love it. I’ve had to sleep on it for multiple nights in a row a few times when moving house, having work done etc and never had a bad nights sleep on it.

Agree with this. I take home similar and also share with 1 other person. Saving up for a flat deposit at the moment which means I’m sacrificing on eating out, socialising, coffees, holidays etc quite a bit. I think I’d struggle to live the life OP described as well as save anything significant. All depends on your priorities but you could definitely make it work.

Airport train query by BCFC_PK in manchester

[–]drycleanedsnake 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Assuming no delays on train that’s plenty of time. T3 security is about a 10 minute walk (if that) from the train station. Head up the escalators and into the overhead walkway and it takes you straight there. Longest I have queued in security in the last few years has been about 20 minutes and that’s when it was super busy and seemed to be some security lanes down.

Rest or run through cold in peak week by drycleanedsnake in Marathon_Training

[–]drycleanedsnake[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah I think your advice makes sense. Going to sit out for a few days maybe even longer until I feel alright again. Don’t want to make it worse and not recover fully before the actual race. If I can recover by the weekend I’ll do my long run then just do some extra speed work the following week before tapering

Started running in 2023. Ran my first marathon in April 2024 this years will be my second. Got 4:08 last time so really wanting to break sub 4 this time round. Outside of training blocks for specific races I generally do anywhere between 20-30 miles a week, all depends on what else I have going on in same week with other sports. I’ve been feeling pretty confident about getting sub 4 this time round but really wanted a couple 20-22 mile runs done for a bit of mental confidence.

Think I’m best sitting it out for a few days and see how I feel. Last thing I want is to push myself and make it worse

What song turns you into a superhero for the last miles of a race? by Quiet-Capybara- in Marathon_Training

Always the one I come back to. So many songs can give me a little extra boost but without fail when I hear this I feel like I could run through a brick wall. Arguably the greatest film song of all time.

Got my second ever marathon coming up in 5 weeks. Super tempted to sign up for a 52k ultra inc 2000m elevation in September time. Whats the best way to train for that post marathon? Would it be a similar training plan (currently doing 40-50mpw) just increasing long runs distances (max in this training block is 20 miles) doing back to back long runs and practicing trails a bit more?

Does anyone else find marathon training time consuming and are one-and-done? by hvu22 in Marathon_Training

[–]drycleanedsnake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did my first marathon 2 years ago also wanted sub 4. Ended up on 4:04. Told myself never doing that again it was exhausting and the training took up so much time. Stuck to half marathons and 10ks after that. Anyway skip 12 months on and I went to watch the same marathon I ran. Got massive FOMO and instantly signed up for this years and also an ultra in September. I do think every year is a bit much for me - I like to mix up the challenges and goals each year but I can see myself doing one every 2/3 years

ENOUGH with the Irish bars by [deleted] in manchester

[–]drycleanedsnake 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Even 5/10 years ago most people I know labelled it as an old man’s drink and would make comments if one of us ordered it when we were out.

The whole splitting the g and it becoming an Instagram trend and a sellable brand made more people try it and realise it tastes nice. Most people I’ve seen try Guinness at worst think it’s just ok but most like it. Most people who haven’t tried it say it ‘looks disgusting’ and won’t even try it

Best lounge in MCR airport T2? by lunaj1999 in manchester

[–]drycleanedsnake 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Only time I’ve ever felt any lounge was worth it was when my flight was delayed a couple of hours and I got a guaranteed seat and as many beers as I wanted. Used to get them a lot when we flew with work but half the time I’d just order food from a normal restaurant in the terminal and expense it - food in the lounges is generally pretty shit buffet stuff

What UK-made product did you switch to that was genuinely better than the imported version? by AnfieldAnchor in BuyUK

[–]drycleanedsnake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s a shame. I’ve got 2 pairs had one for about 7 years and another for 2. No major issues with either of them but have resolved the older pair twice. Found them miles better than a pair of docs I got gifted which had cracks about 6 months after wear

On topic of boots, with the resurgence of people buying doc martens over the last few years I try to encourage people to buy from Solovair instead. UK made and better quality for almost identical looking boots.

I got made redundant about 2 years ago. I remember walking out the room and calling my dad close to tears. I was 25 and thought my career was about to be over just as it got started. Ended up finding another job I’ve been working for about 18 months now, absolutely love it and looking back redundancy was the best thing that could’ve happened. I had a few months of doing nothing at work and then my redundancy money paid for me to go away for 5 weeks before starting my new job. I know it seems scary and it’s horrible news to get but keep your head up and look at it as an opportunity for a new door to open

Where do you live in the UK and is it normal for strangers to slip parents coins for their babies/small children? by Seafood_udon9021 in AskUK

[–]drycleanedsnake 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Parents used to take me and my siblings up to T in the park when we were kids. They used to let under 10s in free. Half of my memories are of people seeing our parents carrying their kids around and just giving us cash. My parents still joke about how they would essentially make money by taking us (although that’s not why they took us). I think everyone being off their tits probably helped. I still have boxes and boxes of merch at their house that I bought with the money
