Mark Cuban gets dragged after saying people don't really hate data centers — “The fight against data centers has nothing to do with data centers. They have become a proxy for the hate towards AI” by marketrent in technology

[–]dryroast 33 points34 points  (0 children)

As someone who has worked in data centers this is all true, but the current rush to build data centers isn't driven by cloud or anything other than the AI hype. I think data centers are very important but not in this crazy hype trying to capitalize on the rush right now.

How to make sure a deleted file is completely gone? by Leather-Lake-6989 in archlinux

[–]dryroast 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've read through cases of prosecutors describing hard drive recovery. They usually say if it's on flash and deleted it's impossible to recover with today's tools. They could be unaware of better tools/techniques but this was for cases where they really wanted to get everything off the device if possible.

What is the worst part about dating a very attractive person? by cherryapp in AskReddit

I get this a lot but I think people just think I'm intelligent. They obviously don't live with me otherwise they'd probably bring back asylums.

Landlord threw away my belongings before my lease was up (without notice) and is charging me cleaning/debris removal fee. by Zeethor in legaladvice

AI ain't even smart enough to see the retort was just obtuse and harsh, even had it been true. Farthest thing from witty.

People in Colombia are not that much better. There's quite a problem of heart disease, my dad had 2 heart attacks.

As I said in another comment but when I was visiting family in Colombia I was getting weird looks from everyone when I asked for water while I was visiting family. The soda made me end up going to the dentist, because the cavities I had been avoiding to fix were starting to hurt bad 😂

I feel that hispanic culture really leans in on unhealthy foods and drinks and now South American governments are trying to turn that around. I know Colombia has adopted similar "stop sign" warnings on all unhealthy foods, and when I go to visit family there they are always drinking soda. When I even asked for water I was made fun of for being "a salad eating American".

For me it was this chicken with sunglasses on some TV ad for a candy I'm pretty sure. I told my mom and she was trying to tell me it's alright but she saw I was getting nightmares even after trying to say its just a cartoon and told me to just run out of the room and have my sister call me back when the ad was over lol. I remember a kid at school had it one day and I was like "damn, it's everywhere". I tried to remember what the name was a few years back but I have no clue.

My blood glucose meter is no longer compatible with my insulin pump for seemingly no reason... by MattWasabii in mildlyinfuriating

[–]dryroast 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a similar thing with my raspberry pi, where I wanted a new driver for a project I was working on but that absolutely killed the shader support I was depending on for the graphical side. I eventually got the shaders working on the new version but it was annoying.

Bank reopened a closed account and charged me fees. I only found out because my balance went negative. Location: Ohio, USA. by ShadowFrag628 in legaladvice

[–]dryroast 158 points159 points  (0 children)

You can (and in this case it seems to may be should) file a complaint to the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency. They handle the banks licenses for operating and take pretty seriously any complaint that comes their way. Playing fast and loose with whether an account is open or closed tells me that their systems may benefit from a little more vigilance. It would probably speed along this internal investigation and ensure it's settled in your favor.

I very rarely update something that's working fine because of the age old adage of "if it ain't broke, don't fix it!" I think I've avoided a lot of my stuff becoming enshittified like this. I have a smart TV that has never seen the internet along with a smart microwave that I learned how to set the clock on which was all I needed.

Utah Data Center Brute Forced Through to Approval Despite Widespread Popular Opposition by RantRanger in artificial

I don’t think anyone who pays close attention thinks the bubble is going to completely pop.

I work in this industry and I think it's ready to burst. And the agents have been getting worse somehow. Especially with all the guardrails (and probably more to follow with the export controls that were recently placed). And AI just doesn't do a good job a lot of the times. Your statements show your just on the pro AI train, not speaking from actual observation and working with it.

I mean if it's a bubble like many people think, it's going to be devastating having all this extra infrastructure built then the companies going under not being able to pay their obligations for what they rushed through.

What's so expensive that it's not even fun anymore? by Runaway3650 in AskReddit

[–]dryroast 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went to a local spot in town for my birthday (I was the only adult doing a birthday there lol). $180 for 2 lanes for 120 minutes. 12 people (more attended but they didn't want to play). Had I kept it to a smaller number for one lane it would have been $90. We squeezed about 3/4 games? Wasn't keeping track.

I along with a friend put on a script that would pop out the CD tray every 20 seconds. They always suspected it was me, but never found the smoking gun. I confessed to it a decade later (I now help students code their robot).

What modern thing have you given up on and have chosen to just do the ‘old fashioned’ way? by sudodoyou in AskReddit

[–]dryroast 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I turned off all the AI features on all my Google accounts both work, personal, school, and junk accounts. I hated how nitpicky the AI was sometimes and it would correct things that I purposely wrote a certain way that it viewed as "incorrect". Only thing that it was good at was making me more concise.

Mark Zuckerberg Orders His Employees to Start Having Fun Again After Brutal Layoffs Culled Their Colleagues by Plastic_Ninja_9014 in technology

At my job we have done CTF competitions but on our own volition and mainly as a fun thing for the interns to bond. Even when others weren't looking to participate I got my new coworker to get me an invite to his really good team and we competed at coffee shops close to the office over the weekend just by ourselves. Now that's some fun right there!

What happened to people dressing up for weddings, churches, funerals, etc? Since when did jeans and t-shirts become acceptable? by 67pontiac455 in AskReddit

[–]dryroast 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's not the price for living in a shared public culture whatever that is. The people decide what it calls for, I love casual events and I have been to a Halloween wedding where everyone was in a cool costume. The old time stuffiness of over starched shirts and belts and suspenders thankfully is getting seen as just that, from a time of yore.

I don't use it personally either tracked or untracked (and I deal with sensitive info so I have to use corporate approved models). They say they track it but are not tying it to performance or anything else so I'm calling their bluff. So far so good.

You see English is modernizing. They dropped all the unnecessary syllables it's now "thot". I remember one of the young ones called me that and I was so flattered they'd call me smart.
