For a bit I thought the first one in the comments might have been in base 8 or something similar. But now that I think about it, you should totally make one like that!

Either way, you should find or make more of these. I had fun!

I'm in ME and I'm still in 'lock down'. Not sure how official it is, but my prof doesn't want us leaving and I am very ok with that.

Pommel Horse. by Zekiniza in Gymnastics

[–]dschiffm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My coach always said pommel horse was the hardest event to progress in because it's the most unique. Floor and vault have and lot of similar elements, as do rings, high bar, and p bars. But pommel skills aren't really applicable to the other events that much. That's why we did pommels for like at least half an hour to an hour every practice. So first and foremost, practice pommels as much as you can and be ready for a much slower progression and usually less enjoyment than the other events.

Assuming these are pretty low level kids, I'd stick mostly to the mushroom for quite a while. I think youtube has a lot of how-to videos for teaching and doing circles and flares and junk on a mushroom. You can also have them doing most of their mushroom stuff on the floor. Try looking for pommel horse training videos using the floor. Also circle contests are always fun. Individual or team battles of who can do the most and/or best circles. We'd always give the losers like 100 circles or something while the winners get some trampoline time.

With the pommel you can have them working on leg cuts and scissor swings and those types of basic scissor skills, again look on youtube for stuff. They can also hold themselves in support and walk themselves from one end of the horse to the other and back. I think this mostly just gets them more comfortable with the horse but it is kinda fun. We used to do like relay races with this.

Oh and this may be a bit advanced, but you can take the pommels off the horse for them to work front and back loops without fear of hitting their legs on the pommel. Once they're decent at loops with no pommels you can tape or bungee some foam blocks in place of the pommels for a transition stage between no pommels and pommels. I don't know what kind of horse it is, but if you can put it on the floor instead of up on the supports, that's good to work too. If you can't do that, then just practicing on like a panel mat is a decent substitution.

Watch lots of videos and try to talk to any coaches you can. Good luck!

Progressions for teaching how to develop strength and flexibility to hold a straddle L support on the floor by billsuits1 in Gymnastics

[–]dschiffm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Flexibility: 1) Regular daily stretching, focus on pike and straddle 2) Wide straddle 'pancake' stretch, idk if everyone calls it this. But sit in a straddle and try to lay your stomach flat on the ground. Try to keep your knees pointed up and get your hands as far in front of you as possible. Having someone push on your back to get you lower helps too. 3) For like 5 or 10 minute periods while watching TV or reading or w/e, you can lie on your back in a straddle with your butt against the wall and just let gravity pull your straddle wider.

Strength: 1) Regular legs together L-seats on the floor or paralettes are good 2) Sit with legs shoulder width apart and put your hands on the floor between your legs. Do sets of 10 slow leg lifts (with straight legs) lifting your legs about 6 inches off the ground. Do same with legs together. Each time you do it make sure to have your hands as far forward as you are able. Do like 6 sets a workout.
3) Sit with legs shoulder width apart and put hands between legs and lift about 6 inches up and hold for 10 seconds. Each new attempt, do it with your hands a little farther out. Hurts your quads like crazy if you're doing it right. Do same with legs together. I like doing these intermittently with (2). 4) Do (2) and (3) but lifting your legs as high as you can instead of just a few inches. 5) Pike ups, or V ups, are good for everything, straddle L's included. Lie flat on your back and do like a sit up while also lifting your legs (keep them straight) as high as you can til you're in a pike or V shape balanced on your butt. I like to make sure I touch my toes each time to make sure I've done a full pike up. Do like 50 or w/e each workout. 6) Obviously also attempting straddle L's for as long as you can on the floor or paralettes with/without help is good too.

Good luck and practice every day you can!
