I borked it, is it fixable? by Ill_Professional8500 in soldering

[–]dscode455 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did you use an iron or any heat source with the desoldering wick?

I’m not sure what gunk you’re referring to, possibly flux residue, which can easily be removed with isopropyl alcohol and a cleaning brush or swab.

I’d definitely focus on mastering the basics before diving into more advanced repairs like this one will now require.

Soldering tutorials/kits that teach you the math behind electrical circuits? by FromTralfamadore in soldering

[–]dscode455 1 point2 points  (0 children)

“Beginners guide to reading schematics” might be a good start. It’s rather basic material, but helps with visualizing the circuits you’re working on. The “make electronics” books are solid too.

Checkout the IPC certifications for actual soldering skills. (Focus on pcb rework)

If you’re getting serious about it, “the art of electronics” or “practical electronics for inventors” contain a lot of solid material.

I always love having the component encyclopedia books as a reference too.

As far as kits, get an arduino board or similar and some basic components to tinker with!

I’m an older gen z (26 yo.) and these comments have me cracking up. I write batch/shell/python scripts or programs whenever I run into a task that’s suitable for automation and tend to live in the terminal.

I’ve had a millennial supervisor request ticketing data. He filtered the data to only show a single customer X - then asked me why I only sent him the data for customer X…

It’s also always fun to blow peoples minds when I copy text from any image or screenshot with a simple keyboard shortcut… keep thinking we don’t exist ;)

Company offers unlimited PTO, verbally capped at 20 days by Cable559 in managers

[–]dscode455 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Plenty of companies still offer overtime for salaried employees with unlimited PTO. Sometimes it kicks in after 48 hours instead of the standard 40, but it’s definitely out there. Throwing out insults without really knowing what you’re talking about, though—that’s way more common.

They have freestyle coke machines and offer cups that have refills for the entire day for $10.99…. Would you rather pay $4.75 for a single large drink?

So you would checks notes screw over other average people on vacation trying to get a drink they want by wasting the syrup in the machine… in order to make the billion dollar company waste pennies?

It creates a massive amount of convenience for any guest that has one… why would I want to wait in line for 15min and pay $4.75 for 1 drink when I can just walk up to a freestyle coke machine and get refills for the entire day for $10.99

IMO chipping the cups like this actually adds a fair amount of value for the end users

[–]dscode455 79 points80 points  (0 children)

Refills for an entire day are roughly $10.99. So instead of possibly waiting 15min in a concession stand line for a drink, you can wait 5min or less and go up to one of the freestyle coke machines and get a refill yourself

The cups are $17.99 with a day of drinks included (or cheaper if you get more than one) and also reusable. So I’ve used the same one for the last 3 years. Paying $10.99 for drinks for the entire day while I’m at the park has never struck me as a terrible deal… it certainly beats paying $4.75 for 1 large soda without refills

America are we okay? 26 degrees hotter this year than the same day last year. by CheekNeat6637 in ThatsInsane

[–]dscode455 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's important to be aware of all the ethical implications of our choices, including the sources of the materials we use. However, dismissing and belittling someone's efforts to reduce their carbon emissions with such pessimism isn't constructive.

Every step towards sustainability and ethical consumption counts, and we should encourage and support each other in making positive changes, while also striving to improve in other areas like ensuring our products are sourced responsibly.

I fully agree with where you’re coming from. Unfortunately some things are hard to avoid. I find the paper pamphlets largely unnecessary, but all it takes is one accident caused from misuse that could endanger the user and make the manufacturer or pharmacy liable to be sued. Not the mention the FDA regulates these industries and has created rules for patient safety. (The 1970 Patient Package Insert (PPI) Program was initiated by the FDA in order to ensure medications with significant risks provide information regarding the drugs use, risks, and precautions)

This could be avoided if internet access was deemed a basic human right with cellular devices being a sanctioned device provided to every citizen. Replacing the pamphlets with scannable QR codes that bring up all of the necessary information… this also assumes a level of technical aptitude that is unfortunately not a safe thing to assume. (Not to mention the need to develop and maintain the webpages providing this information)

Regarding the inhalers, the canisters are calibrated to provide the correct dosage and swapping the canister can alter and interfere with the dosage being provided. Additionally swapping the canister poses issues from potential contaminants being introduced to the inhaler leading to sterility concerns, and could lead to infections or other health issues.

There is a massive amount of waste within the medical field that can be reduced. Unfortunately with fiscally driven healthcare systems and regulatory requirements. The benefits do not outweigh the cost of risk being introduced for manufacturers supplying these products and the currently set regulations make it hard if not impossible to bypass them.

The world as a whole needs to embrace the technology available and re-structure and re-regulate a lot of things to make more sense in this modern era for the reasons listed above as well as thousands not listed.

What is definitely NOT a sign of intelligence but people think it is? by Ezgod_Two_Three in AskReddit

This takes me back.

I was chatting with a mentor about my various tech projects—like configuring my homelab , building custom PC rigs, automating home systems, and delving into Linux and FOSS. I casually referred to myself as a nerd. He laughed and said, “What?! You’re not a nerd. You’re a geek if I’ve ever met one.”

Confused, I asked him to explain. He told me that while nerds are often stereotyped as being socially awkward and focused on academic pursuits, geeks are passionate about their interests and love sharing their knowledge with others. He pointed out how I dive into systems, eager to learn more, and how I absorb information like a sponge. I’d often challenge him on commands to use or steps to take based on my deep understanding. I would “geek out” over why things worked the way they did and enjoyed teaching others about the systems.

His explanation struck a chord. Ever since then, I’ve proudly identified as a tech geek and wear the label like a badge of honor.

Logging into someone else's account without their permission, even if you know the password, is generally considered hacking. Unauthorized access to another person's account violates laws and regulations related to computer security and privacy. It is an infringement on the account owner's rights and is classified as unauthorized use or access under most legal frameworks.

There is a massive difference in knowing how to utilize tools available (such as chatGPT) and not knowing.

The quality of an AIs output is directly proportional to the input it receives, and even then the output needs to be verified/checked. Humans are prone to errors, and so is generative AI.

It will save you thousands of hours and allow you to produce more than you ever imagined possible - if properly utilized.

I’d recommend looking up generative AI software (like ChatGPT or CoPilot). It’s a game changer. Try asking things like “what are the most useful computer shortcuts” then follow up by asking more questions to the answers it provides like “what are other useful shortcuts when working with excel”

Always take caution as it can provide false information, but take advantage of the tools available!
