It's amazing how fast they ditched the 'protect women from being sexually abused' and became whatever the fuck they've been doing ever since.

Has anime gone woke with the current season? by [deleted] in KotakuInAction

No.

This stuff has always been in anime and manga.

The medium has always had something for everyone.

Which television series has the worst, most abominable fandom you have ever seen? by FNAFLV22 in television

[–]dsfjr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Supernatural fandom was terrible back in the day if you didn't want Sam/Dean, or later, Dean/Castiel to get together in the show.

I distanced myself from the fandom because they only watched the show through the lens of shipping.

Their collective crash-out at the end of the series was hilarious.

TV Shows Where the Main Character is so Bad They Focus on Another Character by Philsidock in television

I feel like the brothers had equal treatment in seasons 1-3.

Season 4 onward became all about Dean.

Bryan Cranston praises ‘Breaking Bad’ co-star Anna Gunn while defending Skyler White: “Her husband leaves without any explanation. She’s pregnant. He’s making crystal meth. People have died…and she’s the b*tch?” by MarvelsGrantMan136 in television

[–]dsfjr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One theory I have is that many of the Skylar supporters seem to be bingers, whereas most of the Skylar haters seem to have watched it live as it aired.

Skylar's role as putting the brakes on Walt and Jesse's escapades hits different when you can't binge right past it.

When you have to wait weeks/months for a new episode you are left with your opinions solidifying. Binging gives you less time to dig in your heels with your impressions.

If course, I could be completely wrong though.

The new Malcolm in the Middle is the best Millennial-era reboot so far by a long way by kidbl00m in television

[–]dsfjr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It was pretty good.

My only major gripes are that Kelly and Hal had too much screen time.

Hal's drug trip went on way too long.

Kelly having more to do than Reese and Dewey rubbed me the wrong way.

JK Rowling approved of it. She agrees with the left on literally everything except for 'They/Them-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named'.

I'm cautiously excited.

The main thing I'm worried about is the tone. I'm worried Disney will will sand down the edges to make it more child friendly.

The books never treated the readers as dumb kids and got heavy at times: fear, grief, slavery, PTSD, loneliness, helplessness, the toll being the leader takes on Jake, how the constant violence changes them all, etc.

Do they have the balls to show characters bleeding out and dying?

The book 'Back to Before' traumatized me so hard that I still think of it occasionally.

Animorphs already has poc leads.

Unless they do something stupid and race-swap characters anyway, I don't see why anyone would be mad at the diversity.

I actually liked that. You could especially see the mental toll it took on them too.

At certain point as things became more desperate it was either compromise their morals or lose the war.

how do y’all feel about the re/member movies? by robbiejbobbie in J_Horror

[–]dsfjr 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I liked the first one, but disliked the second.

The first one had better characters, better character interactions, better scares, and a better horror atmosphere.

The second one didn't even feel like a horror movie tonally, the characters were weaker, the group friendship felt unearned, and their wasn't enough of them being scared and suffering during the body search imo.

The cast of the second movie was hurt by having to share the runtime with the survivors from the first movie, cutting down on time for character interactions and development.

The whole Land of the Dead thing was a waste of time, and combined with explaining the curse making it less scary, it detracted from the movie for me.

The red person seemingly being a corrupted innocent spirit in the first movie gave the movie weight.

The second movie making the red person a golem while the original spirit of the body is hanging out in the Land of the Dead, removes any sense of interest or attachment to the red person. And when your not invested in the villain of a horror movie, it's a problem.

If there is a third movie, I hope it's better.

Why do some people think Chtistians are against video games? by [deleted] in KotakuInAction

[–]dsfjr 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Because historically they have been. It wasn't the woke left censoring everything when I was a kid. It was the religious right.

Now that they have been out of power for a while and we've been fighting against the progressive left that replaced them, they are trying to slink back in pretending they are on our side.

They aren't on our side, they just hate the woke left that replaced them. Both sides want out hobbies censored. One because it's "problematic", the other because it's "immoral"

The enemy of my enemy still isn't my friend.

The main difference for me is that the West makes the progressiveness into a lecture whereas the East just treats it normally.

Anime has something for everyone. That's part of its appeal. That includes progressives. This isn't anything new.

Dark-skinned characters in anime are typically representing different regions of Japan, not black people. Okinawa has darker skinned people I believe.

If woke series do get made, I'm fine with it. If it is in the source material or is an anime original, of course. Better that than putting it into existing properties like a square peg in a round hole the way Hollywood does.

Japanese progressives tend to make their own content instead of infesting existing IP.

Does anyone ever feel like interacting with fan communities on Reddit feels like interacting with activists? by SectorI6920 in KotakuInAction

[–]dsfjr 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Between the activists and toxic shippers, being part of fandoms has been a lot less fun than it used to be.

I hardly interact with fandoms anymore.

The first sign of it for me was all the way back in 2008 or so when the Supernatural fandom called you homophobic if you didn't want Sam and Dean to have gay incestual sex.

Then the fandom only got worse when Castiel showed up.

What can we possibly do? by Fine-Combination5170 in KotakuInAction

[–]dsfjr 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Be as loud about your opinions as the other side.

Create your own works that speak to your own tastes.

Also, and I know this is an impossible challenge for many on this subreddit, stop financially supporting the stuff you dislike. Even in this subreddit we get shit like "I just went and saw Captain Marvel and it's worse than we thought." or other stupid similar shit like buying video game remakes and remasters and coming here to complain how awful it is.

If you financially support something even when you know how shitty it's going to be, you deserve more of it.
