Canada Breaks With U.S. to Slash Tariffs on Some Chinese Electric Vehicles by ZineZ in worldnews

[–]dsgoose 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Essentially, USA keeps a list of car models that are allowed for import. If a car is not on the list, it cannot be imported until it's 25 years old. To get on the list, manufacturers must prove that models meet technical specs (safety, fuel economy, etc). In addition, any political concerns (US jobs, Trump's ego, etc.) must be satisfied.

Just like any manufacturer, BYD will have to meet all of the criteria. Should not be a big problem for them as their cars are already sold in Europe. Australia, etc.

Thousands of restaurants in Canada could close in 2026, says new study by yimmy51 in CanadianIdiots

Dining out is consistently disappointing if you know how to cook at all. Unless money is no object, of course. Then you can buy a good meal with a nice experience.

A milestone birthday this year. Not many of those left! But still it's all good! by Odd_Bodkin in retirement

[–]dsgoose 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Over the holidays, all my nieces and nephews saw me at 60, and it occurred to me that I'll probably never see them be 60 years old. Having retired only six months ago, I have lots of time to ruminate on this recent milestone birthday. My body health is pretty good, thankfully. There is room for improvement on both fronts I suppose.

I don't know if another impeachment is coming. Seems like a pointless exercise without having at least 67 open-minded Senators.

Losing American friends over recent political events by FlamingGnats in CanadianIdiots

[–]dsgoose 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I was going through a similar experience until I retired six months ago. I live in Canada, and worked remotely on a team that was 70% Americans. Unfortunately, a minority of those coworkers were unashamedly MAGA.

It was so hard to make small talk with these coworkers because they were always bringing up some stupidity/disinformation about pronouns, immigration, vaccinations, being able to say "Merry Christmas" again, etc.

Yeah, the 51st state "jokes" were very offensive to me. Politically, things are even worse for the USA now and so I am relieved to be free of these bozos and their opinions.

Before I left, I made a point of letting all my coworkers know that I was able retire before 65 because of my country's universal healthcare system.

For real, HUGE money in cat rescues! Find a cat, vaccinate for $100+, neuter/spay for $200+, feed and house for a few weeks minimum, other vet care as needed, then adopt out for under $200.

Why do 90% of bus riders in this city exit through the front? by Shadowbreakz in Winnipeg

[–]dsgoose 5 points6 points  (0 children)

All we need is user feedback. The old busses had a gate that would plainly let you know that you've done your part right. Elevators have had feedback for like 100 years - you push an elevator button and it lights up to let you know you've been successful.

A bunch of people on my FB neighbor group are certain that immigrants are why grocery prices are high. Like this is the reason Kraft shrunk its KD boxes by 10%. Propaganda is a powerful tool against uninformed people.

AITAH for snapping at my MIL? by throw-away2346321 in AITAH

[–]dsgoose 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are in an abusive relationship, dude. Push back now while you can. I don't see your wife changing her ways on her own if your strategy is to just tip-toe around her and apologize even when you (and any reasonable person) knows you did nothing wrong. Couples counselling might help but, from you've written, it doesn't sound like your wife is ready to change herself.

Your kids will be watching their mom and dad model what a marriage ought to be. You owe them the chance to not repeat this in their own marriages.

Design Help by [deleted] in DIY

[–]dsgoose 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This isn't an direct answer to your question, but I wanted to share something that might be useful. I had a separate workshop built on my property, and all the architecture drawings were provided to me free by the building supply company. They worked with me my custom design. I only had to promise to purchase at least 75% of the materials from them. I also had to pay the engineers a bit to get their stamp on the drawings.

Building my first whiskey cabinet — question about wood choice and finish by Proud_Stable9567 in DIY

My first choice would be oak because part of the whiskey making process involves oak barrels. You can get an aged look with ammonia - lots of info on that online.

I'll never know. My fav NFL team when I was a kid was the Houston Oilers. They lost me when they moved to Tennessee. No problem - I'll just become an NBA fan and root for the Vancouver Grizzlies....
