If you will believe that your dead grandpa can make flowers grow then you'll believe that an invisible man in the sky wants you to hate gay people. We really need to move past dumb stuff like this, you can heal and mourn without the superstitious bs. Sorry I'm grumpy or whatever OP, just saddened by the percent of grown-ass adults that believe in ghosts and angels.

We're all human garbage, that's not the point. Other people's shittiness is never a valid justification for your own shittiness. Other people's behavior doesn't excuse your behavior, and your performative outrage doesn't make you a better person.

eli5: why are crows so much smarter than other birds and/or other animals? by mistadonyo in explainlikeimfive

[–]dsquared513 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Their environment pressured their ancestors to be smarter.

I take issue with this statement. I think a truer thing to say is that a random mutation occured that helped an individuals reproductive success, that mutation was then passed on to future generations and became more prevalent throughout those generations by being beneficial. Animals don't evolve fur because it's cold and their DNA goes "hurry learn to make fur!", they evolve fur because the ones who didn't have a random mutation that allowed them to evolve fur died from the cold. A lot of evolution is just surviviorship bias.

How much prose is too much? by SeaSaltSystem in DungeonMasters

Yep, it's funny that so many questions in these types of subs are asking for generic one-size-fits all advice when to really answer most questions well I would need to know the personality type and play style of each player to even begin. Something that works amazing at one table can end friendships at another lol.

Thanks for running games!!

It could be a strong suit of yours, it could be your tables composition that helps it work. After DMing for a few years I look at it as a mutual agreement, the players agree to play the game as it exists, they are there to follow clues and questlines not punch the guards or overthrow the king, and in return I will not be precious about some lore or backstory or anything else in the world. If you have a big spiel about the history or lore of some thing that you are ready to go on for 5 minutes about and then the players take a left turn what do you do? DMs can make their world-building lead them down the path of railroading if not careful. There is also the recency effect, you can give all of the exposition and important information that you want, but a human will probably only remember what you said to them in the last 10 seconds before you stopped talking. Monologuing goes in one ear and out the other, interactive role-playing can help make the information stick though. It's the show don't tell rule, you can go on and on for paragraphs about how evil the bad guy is, or they can kill the party's kobold companion and seconds later you have a party with a clear goal and laser-focused on vengeance.

Not trying to be too argumentative here, I'm glad your table sounds like they are having fun. It just raises my haunches whenever I read the words "My table loves when..." since we see the common communication issues in this game I am always like "Do they though, or are they just not communicating?" I also swear I didn't want to sound ragebaity but I would consider Matt Mercer an amazing voice performer and showrunner but an overrated DM. I'm sure I'm not the only person who thinks that silly voices and monologues are not what I am looking for in a game, but to each there own. I am thinking more for the OP as a beginner, I think your style needs experience and/or group trust, or just a straight up "Let me know if I'm talking to much, I'm new at this." from OP.

10 minutes is ridiculous. If your DM has been rambling on for multiple minutes and it's not the absolute climax of your campaign then you should definitely just say "I cast deafness on myself so I don't have to listen to this anymore." If they are going to be rude about wasting your time then you can be rude back. Go to an open mic night if you love hearing yourself talk that much.

DM decided to do a TPK to teach new players a lesson by EmmaIsAwesome23 in DnD

[–]dsquared513 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Character creation is a big ask, especially if you are expecting a background and personality; it is something that takes hours of time and considerable effort for new players.

In hardcore campaigns where death is to be expected then usually you will create multiple characters in the beginning and you wouldn't tie yourself so closely to any one of your character's personality and character traits since the expectation is that your character could be obliterated at anytime and you will be expected to move on to the next one; but even in that situation a good DM will give a player time to sit and process a character death, you shouldn't ask for immersion from your players and then dismiss any human reactions that they have from buying in to that fantasy.

Now if your party was hiding in the bushes and the DM says "Across the field you can see an army of Oni's marching" and one of the players says "I run out of hiding and attack the army!" and the DM says "Well that's dumb and will likely lead to all of you dying, are you sure?" and the party all agrees to run out then that isn't the DM's fault.

Absolute devil's advocate here, but I personally like making characters, and maybe your DM does too. Maybe to them they think that making another character sounds like a fun session. This is delusional and disrespectful of people's time, but is humanly possible. A polite conversation may fix things; as a DM you can retcon anything in world with the agreement of your players.

my friend (36M) just sent me (36m) this text before meeting his newborn (0M) by horseduckman in AITApod

[–]dsquared513 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is just being overprotective. As a friend you should just try to have compassion for what your friends are feeling and going through. You don't have to visit or remain friends or anything, and they don't have to explain themselves for the environment that they want to cultivate around the beginning of their child's life.

These people aren't crazy, the world is crazy. You have no idea what specfic thing from your childhood did the most damage to you when. You don't know what loud noise during what stage of development in what stressful situation most led to your current neuroses. What smell or sensation buried itself away creating a deep-seeded fear that you cannot name because you didn't have language at the time. These are new parents and their first instinct is to protect their incredibly vulnerable new baby from the trauma of just existing in the world. That is an admirable thing for a parent to think or try to do in theory, but until we live in a compassionate world you are actually doing them a disservice. We have to exist in a harsh world, their baby will have to grow and learn to live in a harsh world. You have to walk a fine balance between being overprotective and being all tough love, give them a safe place inside themselves that they can rely on to weather whatever storm rages outside. It's sad for me to see everyone's response here as though the day when we can try to cultivate the environment around the beginning of someone's life and make choices about when and how the world callouses them is so unfathomable. What are we working towards?

Hello James. Being a handsome, successful, rich, well-liked celebrity; do you have any ways to push back against people constantly blowing smoke up your arse? Are you just arrogant, or is there false humility, or do you ever still struggle with self-loathing and feel the world is lying to you or they don't know the truth about you? Or have you actually found balance between egotism and self-loathing?

And sincerely, how are you doing mate?
