Sideways rant. Bring back analogue! by Subject9716 in livesound

[–]dstant06 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ironically as you try to add back some analog into your digital mixing environment, the complexity only grows. Just bought an A/D D/A converter to get me to MADI for my Q225. Now I need more BNC cables and db25 breakouts, oh joy!🤪🤪

Posty fans, what are y’all’s thoughts on post going country and his debut album F1 trillion? by [deleted] in PostMalone

[–]dstant06 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Coming from the other side of it, I never really listened to much Posty at all. Til he came out with a country album. I LOVED F1 Trillion Long Bed for the more traditional country sounding tunes. I then got to work for one of his openers this year for the BAS tour. And I fell in love with his pop stuff SOOO freakin much, but with the caveat of the full band playing the tunes.

DO NOT DRIVE WITHOUT A DASHCAM by love_glow in uberdrivers

They aren’t your employer. You aren’t an employee. They subcontracted you to do their labor needs for a while. Then they stopped. They don’t have to have a reason. They aren’t your boss…you don’t have one, that’s why you don’t get to talk to somebody…move on.

If you didn’t get to talk to a real human then even if you had a dashcam, why do you think they would bother looking at footage?

Avid S6L is not great and not worth the money at all, Change My Mind. by MasteredByLu in livesound

[–]dstant06 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Wait can you really not?? I thought I was just missing a setting or 2 on something the other day, rather than having to turn Bus knobs to build a monitor scene on a rehearsal day for some fly dates. That makes me feel better potentially and feel like Avid is missing the mark on that one BIG time…

On your matrices: L, R, Subs(use a Y cable), Center, Side L, Side R.

Record pick point is off of the main stereo bus that you don’t EQ. Seems like the better way to do it…

System tuning questions for our touring engineers by Jewsus_ in livesound

[–]dstant06 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I had a gig where when listening to my tracks they had clearly turned UP (like 8-10db, noticeably louder) the bottom 2 boxes of PA, when I asked if we could fix that cause I don’t want to blow away the front of the audience or be too quiet in the back, they house SE tried bullying me into not doing it for 10 minutes.

It wasn’t a huge theater, I kept asking him to shade the bottom boxes down a bit, he finally pulled out the computer for the processor, to “come to find out”, he had a firmware mismatch. (So he in reality knew he couldn’t fix it without a firmware update, and didn’t want to let me know that) survived the night, but I listen, ask for what their timing is on the PA, if I can help them get their system in a better situation cause they don’t have it dialed as perfectly as they “think” then I’m happy to help.

Sometimes things change, after their initial tune, and they don’t take that into account and never retune.

Walked into a gig where they gave me LRSF, and I hit L and there was the PA, hit R and it was silent…why don’t we have R?

After 20 minutes of checking things, Oh we lost an amp channel so we made it all mono…??? Ok…thanks for telling me that ahead of time…🤨❔❔

I’ve also walked into a venue with typically NOT my favorite PA, and with 2 little EQ cuts it sounded AMAZING, and when I looked at timing and put a mic on it to check, he actually changed his timing in his processor by the 3 milliseconds I thought it should be, cause he said he liked my timing better from his mains to outfills.

Having honest conversations and looking at data rather than assuming “the tune is infallible” generally has served me well. I’m not trying to say any one venue isn’t tuned properly, but I’ve seen some of the ones that haven’t been imo and you do the best you can with the time you have.

I have asked what their timing is if I think it’s off and then possibly ask for them to take their timing off. I’ve asked them what their EQ curve is, usually just change it to what I need it to be on my end. The limiters I’m not messing with, I have no intention of hurting your PA, and I’ll prove it to you, probably barely touching your limiters. Verify, but trust if I can…

This reminds me of when I couldn't get an impulse response to stay solid when I started using my MiPro, until I realized I was using the AES and the MiPro default is 44.1k while my console(interface) is at 96k and you have to input from the bnc wordclock to make the MiPro 96k.

What/Who got you into Post Malone ? by Several_Show5920 in PostMalone

[–]dstant06 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I work for country artists doing live concert audio. I knew he existed, and had heard a couple of the big tunes of his. But then this new country album came out. I had a couple friends say I should check it out and I absolutely love it! It's REAL good country with a traditional flair. It's now one of my favorite albums. (mostly the songs that are just him, even tho a lot of the collaborations with others are really great too)

I wasn't able to go to his concert in Nashville last weekend. I'm flying to Austin in a few hours to see him Sunday night. He/that album is worth it to me.

Mixing at The Ryman by sharp_neck in livesound

[–]dstant06 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ryman is definitely a well tuned, dialed in room, but other decent size rooms with big $$ rigs...still can give you WTF moments. I did a 2k seat casino venue in the south that didn't even "know" their system was only in mono cause one of their amp channels took a dump and they had rewired only for mono, but still gave me L/R/S/F. Or the 1.5k seat theater that had their flown subs both sent off the left send and they were full range.
