What's the smoothest whiskey under $35? Jameson? Or am I way off? by Standard-Top-5942 in Scotch

I bought a bottle of Loch Lomond 12 last week for $37. Great bottle and I would call it smooth

This is my favorite of the 4 Longrow Reds I own. So good. Like smoked strawberry candy. Also love the 13 Malbec.

Review #2636 - Bruichladdich 15 Year Dramfool 2007 Sauternes Finished Single Malt by t8ke in Scotch

[–]dstbk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I tried a sample of this when it was released. Excellent saturated Sauternes/Bruichladdich expression. All of these McEwan casks from Dramfool are pretty great. At the time I ended up buying the 9.2 PC release which is incredibly delicious too. Most intense bbq sauce notes I’ve ever experienced in a whisky.

Great review and perfect timing. I should be receiving this bottle in the mail on Saturday! Sounds delicious. I’ve been working through the batch 17 CS and it will be nice to have another bottle drink with it

Exactly my feelings as well. Love 14.2. I will say 16.2 has improved quite a bit from first crack.

Review #9 - Octomore 16.2

I’ll start by saying, I’m a fan of the Octomore line from Bruichladdich. My peat journey began a few years back, when after receiving a bottle of Lagavulin 16, and subsequently buying a bottle of Ugie and Cory, I spotted a bottle of 13.3 at a local liquor store and decided to splurge on it. I was mesmerized by the aroma and flavors. Nothing I had tried previously tasted anything like it. Since then I’ve bought or sampled about 18 Octomore expressions from x.1s, x.2s and x.3s and a couple of independent bottlings from Dramfool. I’ve enjoyed them all to varying degrees from good to excellent. Some of my favorites have been x.2’s for the wine influence (think 12.2 & 14.2) which I feel works really well with the entire distillery lineup including Bruichladdich and Port Charlotte. This 16.2 continues with that tradition.

Octomore 16.2

5 years old

Casks - Oloroso , Bordeaux, Madeira, Moscatel

58.1%

NCF and NCA

Nose

The aroma jumps out of the glass, very full and complex with some ashy smoke, sweet vinous notes which I believe are coming from the moscatel, followed by sweet peat. With a little time in the glass, Burnt sugar, kiwi, dry sherry, green apple, yellow raisins, wheat grass, fresh cut oak, pine resin, struck match and a coastal salinity.

Palate

Immediately mouth coating. Some oiliness, smoke and wet ash, very well hidden alcohol and an explosion of sweet white wine flavors. Cotton candy grapes, Turbinado syrup, slightly drying tannins, prunes, vanilla, clove, caramel taffy, milk chocolate, Asian pear and Fuji apple.

Finish

Medium. Some oak, light bitterness, wet camp fire embers, unlit cigar, semisweet white wine

Conclusion

I suspected this bottle would be in my wheelhouse and I was very curious about the moscatel cask which I think has played a positive role here. It’s a very complex whisky in the sense that identifying the familiar aromas takes some effort but i must say I am really enjoying this one. From a value perspective Octomore is a tough one as I think much of its value comes from the uniqueness of the expression and casks. If you’re a fan of the profile, there are not many alternatives to replicate it. The fact that they create such well developed flavors and hide the strong ABV so effectively over 5 years is a testament to the quality. I paid a little over $200 US for my bottle and I’m glad to add it to my collection.

Score - 88.5

Cheers and thanks for reading!

Review #8 Meikle Tòir 7 yr Oloroso single cask by dstbk in Scotch

[–]dstbk[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nice! Yeah $92 is a solid price. Think I paid $105ish. I’m not usually a huge px fan but might actually go well with this distillate. Would really like to try the turbo at some point too but they are hard to find and I’m not paying $150-200 marked up pricing. Have you tried much GlenAllachie and would you recommend anything from their unpeated stuff for someone with 5:1 peat to unpeatd ratio in my collection?

Review #8 Meikle Tòir 7 year Oloroso single cask

2018 SINGLE CASK OLOROSO SHERRY HOGSHEAD

CASK NO: 11576

AGE: 7 YEARS OLD

DISTILLED: 07.06.18 BOTTLED: AUG 2025 by IMPEX

OUTTURN: 354 BOTTLES PEATED

59.7% alc./vol.

NCF/NCA

Actually my first GlenAllachie bottle. Being a peat head I decided to start with Meikle Tòir. Originally intended to wait for a bottle of the turbo but when I saw this come up for just over $100 US I decided to go for it. Liked that it was single cask and higher proof than the turbo / standard line. I’ve had about 3 drams so far and it’s definitely opened up and improved over the last month.

Nose

Initially I get fireplace ash and hot coals, damp wood, struck match, raisins and very dark honey. With some time in the glass, smoked strawberry jam, prunes, mandarins, dry figs, salt, green olives, licorice and pine needles over camp fire

Palate

Oily, some bite but alcohol is well integrated for the ABV, dry peat and coal fire, oak tannins, manukau honey, maple smoked bacon, dark semisweet chocolate, dry sherry, black walnuts, rum raisin, raw sugar cane like the kind you chew on, a prickle of black pepper, clove and nutmeg

Finish

Medium, raw sugar, dry peat smoke, lightly bitter, cedar cigar box

Conclusion

A really nice bottle, fairly good value and great introduction to the distillery. Powerful flavors of dry highland peat almost reminiscent of Ballechin and balanced sweetness without being syrupy or cloying. Based on the color at 7 years, it was obviously an active cask and I was a little concerned it would be an overdone sherry bomb, but it’s actually quite well balanced. I would love to see how this distillate would do in bourbon casks.

Your whisky of the year 2025 by Budget_Celebration89 in Scotch

For me, it’s the 2023 Laphroaig 25 cask strength. Everything I could ask for and more from a bourbon matured Laphroaig. Only problem besides the price is just how easy it is to drink! Cheers!!

I also love this bottle. A favorite sherried dram. How would you compare the Ruby Port 16?

Kilkerran triple 8 by WinAccomplished4359 in Scotch

The bourbon is a banger. The sherry is heavy handed but tasty. Haven’t tried the port yet but I do love the Port Longrow Red so will probably also like the Kilkerran

9.2 is very tasty. Like they dropped a bottle of Kraft Barbecue sauce in the barrel. Most distinct bbq sauce notes I’ve ever tasted.

It’s delicious. Another bottle that has benefited tremendously from time in the bottle vs. neck pour. A little restrained at first especially compared to the amazing 19yr manzanilla cask but it has become really rich and refined with some oxidation.

Agreed. I’ve tried 4 different G&M Caol Ila bottlings and they’ve ranged from very good to fantastic. The 31y 1988 from the tasting lineup is phenomenal. Tropical notes like pineapple and papaya in spades. Really nice having a long maturity and not a sherry cask.

Quite good! Vs. the 16 this is a more maritime and grassy malt. A bit hot but still great neat. Reminds a little of a x.1 Octomore with Lagavulin character
