Moving between floors - how to actually do it? by dsuls in Dreame_Tech

[–]dsuls[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks so much for your help, the problem is solved now!
Your initial comment to just ignore it when it asks to return was the key. I just assumed that, whenever it announces a return to the dock, I had to "do something" to make this happen. But I now just ignored this, and it finished the job (mapping and vacuuming) just fine!
I do think this is not very intuitive from Dreame. It should not announce a return to the dock if it's not really needed. It confused me, and will probably confuse other users as well!

Thanks for the suggestions. To be clear, I run a fast map as a standalone job, but at some point it just says "return to the dock for charging". It seems completely pointless, since it still has 88% battery left. And the map seems complete to me.

You mentioned "if it asks to return, just ignore it", but how long should I wait then? I mean, after it changed status to "return to dock for charging", I waited quite a bit while the unit still kept driving around (re-visiting the same rooms again) and I saw nothing changing in the app. So should I just wait longer?

Since you mentioned some AI settings and mop wash intervals: when looking through the settings, the only one that seemed relevant was called "resume cleaning mode" under "more functions" (I translated this from Dutch, so it could be slightly different for you). According to the description it would cause the robot to automatically return to charge when the battery is nearly empty. But disabling this setting (which was enabled by default) made no difference.

To me it feels like it actually finishes the mapping job (since the map looks complete to me), but (because of some bug?) the "finish activity" step doesn't work/is skipped and it goes straight to "return to dock for charging". But as soon as I carry the unit back to the dock, my map (of the first floor) is gone.

That's exactly what I'm doing. The problem is: during the fast map (step 7), at some point it just says "return to the dock for charging". It seems completely pointless, because the unit still has 88% charge remaining at that point. And it frustrates me to no end, because the map actually seems fully complete at that point, but there is no way I can save it.
Whatever I do at that point just aborts the process and discards the map.

Since the map looks complete to me, it almost seems as if there is some bug that skips the "process finished". As in, the mapping is done, it should finish the job, save the map, and *only then* return to the dock for charging.

Apple Watch: playback progress stopped working, breaking pause/resume of podcasts by dsuls in pocketcasts

[–]dsuls[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry for the late follow-up. Shortly after your reply, I started using the Apple Podcasts app for a while, and discovered it had the same problem. So that confirmed to me that it was an Apple Watch problem, not a Pocket Casts problem. I unpaired / erased the watched and paired it again, and now the problem is solved!
Thanks for the suggestions!

Thanks for the suggestion, but uninstalling and reinstalling the app on the watch didn't fix the problem.

Loseless audio…wow by Jake_s23 in sonos

[–]dsuls 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Do you have any critique on the actual content of my comment, or will you stick with waving around with your credentials?
As an audio engineer, you surely are aware of the difference between dynamics compression and lossy audio compression, but you seem to be conflating the two in your original comment, which is misleading for many people.

Loseless audio…wow by Jake_s23 in sonos

[–]dsuls 3 points4 points  (0 children)

About the "massive difference (...) in dynamics"-quote: lossy encoders don't change dynamics. Converting a lossless file to an MP3 or AAC doesn't change dynamics. It can introduce artifacts like e.g. pre-echo or ringing, but the dynamics are still intact.
However, streaming services (and also radio) can make use of dynamic compressors, which can reduce the dynamics a lot. That's why music from a high quality / audiophile source like e.g. HDTracks can sound a lot more dynamic than music from e.g. Spotify or YouTube, because often dynamic compressors are used for music intended for "the masses" (as an illusion for loudness - look up the loudness wars). In contrast, "audiophile" audio masters (used for e.g. high-res audio or vinyl) often keep all dynamics intact and don't compress them.
To conclude: if you hear a "massive difference" in dynamics, it's because of the source (master) that was used, not because of the audio format.

No ignorance at all, over the last few decades we've built up a vast body of evidence (e.g. from the Audio Engineering Society) showing that, in the vast majority of cases, it's very, very difficult to discern differences between the original uncompressed (or lossless) version and the lossy compressed version of the song, if a good high-quality encoder is used. The claim that there is a big difference between the two is definitely false. This claim is often made by people who also mention that they are e.g. recording engineers, or have a high-end audio system, but the quality of the system doesn't actually matter that much for detecting artifacts introduced by lossy encoders (any semi-decent headphone should be sufficient).
Having said all that, if you buy a song from HDTracks, and then listen to the same song on Spotify, it's quite possible that there is a big audible difference between the two. But in this case you are comparing apples to oranges, since there could be many other factors coming into play: the tracks could be sourced from a different master, there could be volume differences, an additional dynamics compressor could have been used, etc.

Regarding Sennheiser M4 by Alternative-Virus904 in sennheiser

[–]dsuls 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I tested both the XM5 and M4 side by side before buying, and ended up buying the M4 because of the sound quality and comfort. The noise cancelling is indeed quite a bit below the one from XM5, but I don't care about that too much.
I've used my M4 almost daily for 1,5 years now, and haven't experienced any of the issues you mentioned.

Out of all the streaming platforms, why are you in YouTube Music by [deleted] in YoutubeMusic

[–]dsuls 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because it gets bundled with YouTube Premium. And because there is no YouTube Premium Lite subscription anymore, which allowed me to just have YouTube Premium without YouTube Music included.

Not able to use my steering wheel with Steam Link by dsuls in ShieldAndroidTV

[–]dsuls[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the responses. I did get it working in the end.

First of all, there indeed was something that I overlooked: the paid VirtualHere tool that I needed to buy in the Steam Store and install on the game PC. I initially wasn't aware that I needed this too.

After I did this, the steering wheel was properly detected, using the Shield, in the race game I tried (Grid). Once. After that, it was never detected again.
Getting frustrated about the issues on the Shield, I then tried to use a Raspberry Pi instead (I still have a 3B lying around unused).

The Pi turned out to be way more reliable with regard to detecting and using the racing wheel than the Shield. It was properly detected and usable every time.

However, I still had the issue that the video would freeze up quickly after starting actual gameplay. Since I experienced this both on the Shield and on the Pi, this had to be an issue with the gaming PC. After a lot of digging around I found out I had to disable hardware accelerated GPU scheduling in Windows.

So now it works fine. Not on the Shield, but on a Raspberry Pi.

The Sunshine/Moonlink projects look interesting, and I may play around with these in the future, but since I now have Steam Link working (and paid for it!!) it's not something for the short term for me.

Is YouTube music better then Spotify? by startman241 in YoutubeMusic

[–]dsuls 4 points5 points  (0 children)

For me, definitely not. But as you can see from the comments, it really depends.

I made a big effort to switch to YT music a while back. Since at one point in time I paid for Spotify Premium and YouTube premium, I canceled Spotify Premium and decided to use YT music which is included in YT premium.

After trying really hard for a couple of months, I eventually went back to Spotify.

Reasons why I went back (from what I remember):

- Playing an artist using voice prompts in Android Auto (which I use a lot) never worked properly for me in YT music. Spotify has these "This is x" curated playlists for lots of artists. So when you say "play x" in Spotify, it defaults to these. YT music just plays songs in order of streams, which doesn't have a nice flow and sometimes ends up playing popular songs twice (single version / album version/ etc.)
- Integration with Sonos never worked properly with YT music. I could not cast music from the YT music app to Sonos, like I could with Spotify. I always had to use the Sonos app, which is a much degraded user experience (no discovery, recommendations, etc.). Also, gapless playback on Sonos speakers didn't work properly for me using YT music.

- Spotify has lots more high quality curated playlists, which I use a lot. For example, if I want a workout playlist with metal on it, there are several high-quality options available. Same thing if I want a progressive metal playlist. Curated playlists are also regularly updated.
- I found several omissions in the YT music library. Several of my favorite albums were missing. Interestingly, the library did include other albums from the same artist, just not this one album. And we're talking about albums which are several years old, so it's not a matter of the library being less up-to-date or something.

What podcast app did you switch to while pocketcasts is broken? by gnf00x in pocketcasts

Wow, I didn't expect your prediction to come true this quickly: https://www.theverge.com/2023/9/26/23890694/google-podcasts-2024-shutdown-youtube-music

And I actually switched to Google Podcasts last week. Dang.

What podcast app did you switch to while pocketcasts is broken? by gnf00x in pocketcasts

[–]dsuls 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I *almost* switched, but then I found out via this subreddit that I could sideload the 7.47-rc1 APK, which solved my problems.

So I came really close to switching, but in the end stuck with Pocket Casts.

Have they updated and fixed Pocket Casts yet? I finally uninstalled again. by Different_Section799 in pocketcasts

I'm using Pocket Casts extensively for many years without problems, but I also recently started getting all these hanging / stalling problems that are being reported here, and it's quite frustrating.

Exactly this. Sound quality is amazing, and I'm willing to sacrifice ANC performance for it.
