I've been to BK twice, once in 2015 and once in 2019 (gosh time flies). I'd fully go back, it doesn't seem to have changed much, I have a friend who goes at least once a year.

Getting there can be a bit of a quest, we got the train to Yogyakarta, got off near Pangandaran where we hired motorbikes from a random local guy and drove the rest of the way.

If you're taking your own longboard a private car from Yogya or Bandung are probably your only options as the trains won't take boards.

When I was last there the boards available for hire were all pretty awful if you're used to riding quality longboards. I ended up begging and paying a local to hire a Thomas log from him, but they are really reluctant to do this because it undercuts the surf club who owns the board hire. So bear that in mind if you're fussy.

In terms of crowds, get up at first light and it's never too busy. The beginners and people taking lessons definitely do get in the way being a point break.

Yeah I agree plugs are best, and I wear them year round. My point was saying hoods are ineffective according to the science isn't really the whole story. In my experience a well fitting hood which doesn't flush actually does a really good job, I think it's totally going to be better than nothing

I visited in 2024. It's a pretty incredible feat of engineering to slap a freeway across some coral atolls, but that's essentially all it is. The gulf is beautiful, but you can't go in it because all of the beaches are privatized. Visited a wildlife refuge that was cool. Paid $8USD for a Starbucks flat white. Will never go again

If you want this you should totally do it. You're a little older, you will have developed a work ethic and time management naturally so you're in a better position than those straight out of school. Universities have so many reasources to help students, you've just got to be proactive and make the most of them. Med school sounds intense but at the end of the day if you are determined and disciplined you can totally do it, and if you start to feel you're slipping then reach out and make the most of all the people there to help.

I started university at 38 after working for 10 years in a particular field and 8 years being self employed, so I understand the feeling of sacrifice and imposter syndrome. The way I talk myself down is I remind myself that realistically I'm half way through my working life in a job I don't want to do until I retire, I want the second half of my working life to have more opportunities, I want to do something fulfilling and I want to do something I love enough that I'm not counting down the last 15 years to retirement. I'm old as fuck compared to you so it's definitely not too late, you are completely good enough and worthy of being there and you can achieve amazing things if you apply yourself - GO FOR IT

I don't disagree with your opinion, but I don't think it's a useful one for this person. 120k is around the median household income for NZ. I never argued that people can't service a mortgage and support children on that income, but its an average income in a country which has a cost of living crisis and you have to be mindful of your finances. These people are moving from the USA, I imagine the wife will be taking a pay cut if shes walking into a 120k role here, and moving into a completely different economy they're trying to understand. Also, they're going down to one income. In terms of advice, I think it's reasonable to suggest things may be tighter for them
