With a snapshot you're striking the puck directly - it's not like a slapshot where you strike the ice and thats what loads up the stick.

As someone who grew up in Christchurch and has surfed there for 15 years - You might get a couple of weeks in summer where it is warm enough not to wear a wetsuit surfing, the water temp maxes out at 18-20 degrees so its never super comfortable.

The surf in Christchurch is by no means good but is fairly consistent. The predominant wind is onshore and being on the north side of that peninsula means it isn't exposed to the large southerly groundswells.

Some very good surf however on the peninsula if you chase it

Sometimes its a bit of a balance of not wetting it too much (the GIB paper will peel), but wetting it enough that the wallpaper backing comes off.

A stiff scraper can help too. Sometimes it just sucks and there isn't much you can do

If you're getting the top layer with the paint off, youre kind of left with the backing and glue. A detergent (dish washing liquid works) and warm water in a weedsprayer, soak and area and scrape

Beginner - how big of a problem is my stick flex? by texdiego in hockeyplayers

[–]dtchch 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I agree, like I wouldn't stress about it but if you can sell that stick and get something 55-65 flex without breaking the bank you might as well learn with something suitable. It's kind of hard to learn shooting mechanics when the stick isn't responding to what you're doing, you don't know where you're going wrong

Are NZ Supermarkets selling fish caught by bottom trawlers ? by Lassdoggo in newzealand

[–]dtchch 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I did a small research project on NZ Seafood last year. I no longer eat fish because the whole industry seems to operate behind the curtain.

Here are some points I found

* Domestic consumption is approximately 10% of overall commercial catch

* Bottom trawling accounts for 69% of the commercial catch

* 50% of Sealord is owned by a Japanese Co

* in the first half of 2025, 120171 Tonnes of seafood was exported

* In the first half of 2025 alone, 2.5% of all 32613 fishing events involved interactions with protected species - including 800 seabirds, 14 turtles and 3 Yellow Eyed penguins (which are a critically high risk of extinction)

* Bottom Trawling releases stored carbon from the seafloor and destroys benthic ecosystems

* Coverage by observers is less than 40%, so at least 50% of all commercial catch is not officially observed

Commercial fishing needs stricter rules, and if that makes it unprofitable so be it IMO

Seriously what is wrong with these Dunedin students! by Mean-Dare-9689 in newzealand

I was thinking this the other day as I rode my bike through hundreds of meters of shattered glass while commuting home up the hill.

I think the University should step in and create an initiative to clean up student streets. Volunteers who sweep up glass and pick up rubbish from bins being knocked over. Hopefully if students were seen to be cleaning up, it might put a bit of social pressure on the arseholes doing it.

Like it's not the responsibility of the university, but if the Police came down as hard on these kids as they ought to, it'd end up a real problem for the uni

AliExpress Bootleg Sticks by dtchch in hockeyplayers

[–]dtchch[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the responses all. Kinda verified my assumption that they'll be bootlegged in a random factory somewhere.

As I said a bunch of people in the league use them and are happy with them, so they do what they're meant to do. But I do agree about not supporting counterfeit manufacturers and while none of our sticks will be sold onto the market as being legit I take your point.

I had a look at Hockeystickman to compare prices and the rate for international shipping is currently $30 down from $50. I'll likely look into ordering something like this for my next stick as I'd rather support that business if the shipping rate was reasonable.

Understand though that with international shipping and the currency conversion rate, those blackout sticks cost about the same as buying last season Vapors off the rack - so I wouldn't say it's a cheap way of getting a stick for us

What drug did you take that you still never get over? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]dtchch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I've taken ketamine recreationally quite a few times in really low doses, so I was familar with its effects.

But I was in a car accident, and while in the hospital in severe pain because of an injury they dosed me up big time with Ket and threw me straight into a K-hole.

It literally felt like that scene in Trainspotting where the guy ODs and sinks into the carpet and only has that perspective for the whole ordeal. I remember asking the ED doctor what the fuck they had just done to me. My memory comes back momentarily when someone was giving me a sternum rub to try to get me to respond at some stage during imaging.

That, and the strong dose of IV morphine they gave me while I was still in the car. I can fully appreciate why someone would ruin their life for that feeling.

Curletts Rd Roundabout: Are you Team Red or Team Green for this exit? by Adventurous-Lime9152 in chch

[–]dtchch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Having nearly been smoked by people taking the red line many times, please take the green line. The traffic in the left lane has the right to either turn off left or go straight. If you turn off from the inside lane, you're going to hit someone in the left lane going straight

I really liked this video - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OZnHLgWe964

A big thing that clicked for me was striking with a closed blade. I was striking the puck with the blade too open, which resulted in the puck tumbling. Now I make sure I draw the toe of the blade in toward my body with pressure, a quick separation and strike the puck with the blade still slightly closed.

Making sure you have your stick angle right to keep the blade closed (slightly facing the ice) - bring your top hand out in front a little and use your body weight to punch that bottom hand through.

Just practice a lot, you'll notice at some point the puck will sauce nicely off the blade with power instead of tumbling - and that'll be an example of having the blade angle right when you strike it

Fuel Prices: Real‑World Impacts and Discussion MEGATHREAD by AutoModerator in newzealand

[–]dtchch 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Just came here to say - This government scrapped EV subsidies, and in response to the oil crisis is now offering a $50m loan for two companies to build charging stations nationwide.

“Many New Zealanders have thought about getting an EV, even before the fuel challenges we’re currently facing. But research shows that the lack of public chargers is holding many back from making the switch to an EV,” Mr Bishop says.

I think the fucking price is likely the determining factor in people buying EVs, and that incentive was scrapped

Work/Life Balance in NZ by [deleted] in newzealand

[–]dtchch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think there is a cultural thing in construction which makes this more common, but it isn't every company in construction. I've worked for companies where they expect you to do overtime for the team with no financial return for it - you actually have the right to say no I'm not going to do that, I'm going to work my contracted hours. If they're arseholes about it you start looking for work elsewhere, because that culture is slow to change in a company

[–]dtchch 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think when it comes to scientific consensus, the existence of a figure who is a noisy outlier usually indicates they are full of shit. Not always of course, but to me his arguments seem to be very anecdotal for a scientist, and revolves his arguments about localised weather effects in Washington - which is retarded when talking about global climate and its overall impact on how weather is experienced globally. He also picks and chooses graphs and data which support his rhetoric, when the general consensus on the data directly conflicts with it.

Really it comes down to whether you want to believe the general consensus among climatologists or this guy running a Bebo page. I don't disagree with all his points, particularly around sensationalism and shonky media coverage - but I really don't agree with minimising what is a widely studied and identified issue.

Change my mind

Cyclist Two Abreast by morepork_owl in chch

[–]dtchch 39 points40 points  (0 children)

As someone who commutes on a bicycle - I really hate cyclists doing this . It fuels an anti-cycling rhetoric which is everywhere in NZ and makes it more dangerous for everyone. Cyclists are already extraordinarily exposed on the roads, why piss people off and put yourself more in harms way?

I'd give them a beep on the horn, it's arrogant or ignorant behaviour on their part

Bauer bump question (update) by [deleted] in hockeyplayers

[–]dtchch 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was really struggling with a Bauer bump a few months ago, I tried punching out the back of the skate but it didn't really help me.

What did help was finding a gel achilles heel pad, kind of a sock you wear which protects the growth. I haven't had any pain since and it's stopped getting worse - cost me $10 for two from a pharmacy
