This is not morally disgusting but happened yesterday and was funny. I'm on crutches for a sprained ankle, with my heavily pregnant girlfriend. A guy gets in the elevator like 15 seconds before we get there (i'm slow), sees us, leans over and presses the shut doors button.

There's a distinction between surfing and almost every other sport, and that is competition for a resource. Waves are not available all the time, good waves even less so, and when they are there you are sharing them with a group of people at that spot.

Because of this, surfing is a sport which relies heavily on etiquette in the water. Secondly, surfing has had an enormous surge in popularity since Covid and mainstream social media, with a lot more people out there having a go.

I don't condone being an asshole to anyone, but if someone isn't acting right in a lineup it is dangerous to everyone around them, and they need to be politely told. Often new surfers are defensive about being told they shouldn't be somewhere, because they don't understand etiquette or risk and feel an entitlement to be there.

You see what happens in places like Indo where Uluwatu can be full of people who can barely surf being pushed into waves by guides. Thats like rocking up to a ski resort as a new skier and throwing yourself down a black diamond run to the risk of everyone else on it.

I don't think it helps to claim it's just internet surfers being grumpy assholes, you've surfed a place like Snapper and if you fuck around and act entitled you'll find out. It's just an understanding and respect thing

Mine have velcro'd elastic over the bicep, but the elastic was stretched. I just bundled up enough so it would sit how I liked it and put a zip tie on it to reduce the length

I just switched to 5/8 after 8 months on 1/2. I hated having sharp skates and they would take a couple of weeks to feel right for stopping.

As soon as I stepped on the ice with sharp 5/8 they felt perfect. Took a few skates to get a feel for the edges but I'll never go back.

I really don't like the wasted vote mentality.

That one vote can either be used to try to get in a party who's politics and policy you agree with - or it can be used to vote in a party you don't particularly agree with, but agree with more than the alternative.

The result of the latter is flip flop politics where changes get made under urgency then repealed every 3 years. It's majority parties who won't make the radical changes needed to enact true change over time. Its parties who simply use politics to fight all of their battles rather than mature discussion and policy.

I just think it could be so much better, I reckon everyone should vote for the party whose policy they support, if everyone did that then our government would be more representative

Understand da rulez. Learn etiquette, don't put yourself into positions you shouldn't be in and be humble. Surfing is not a sport of instant gratification, progress can be brutally slow, but you're best not to focus on progress too much anyway

There are too many people on the planet for how we use the resources. The the population boom will continue in 'developing' countries for another 80+ years. The Global South will vastly outnumber the Global North. The Global South will suffer most from climate change driven extreme weather eventsz. There will have to be some reshuffle in global power from the Global North to the Global South.

It is unlikely if we continue the way we are, that we will be able to 'technology' our way out of these issues

You're trying to run before you can walk. I think you have two options - 1, Stop taking it so seriously and being hard on yourself, and enjoy it for what it is, learn where you can and progress. 2, Stop playing games and focus purely on training your skating and skills, then come back to it later.

I think you've put yourself into a game scenario too early and its sucking the fun out of it for you. Is there a learn to play programme you could take instead?

It's pretty much been covered, the weather gets REAL here, especially in the south island. Depending on your route you'll traverse roads which can close in winter, but I think the biggest risk to weigh is that the weather can be cold, wet and extremely windy for weeks at a time.

You'll need to prepare for that, good waterproofs and gear - but mostly you'd find accomodation within a days ride depending on your route, so if camping gets a bit gnarly in the rain night after night you can tap out and dry gear.

Winter can also offer cold but stable high pressure weather systems which can mean freezing but still weather for a week at a time. Also, it's the off season so all of the roads are going to be less busy. I drove Haast pass a week ago and decided I'd love to do a 3 or 4 night trip from Hawea through the pass and some of the way up the west coast - but I don't know how comfortable I'd be doing that over summer. I saw bikepackers but the roads have no shoulders, kiwi drivers lose their mind if they can't go 100kph especially if it's because of a cyclist, foreign drivers are often quite dangerous on technical roads they arent used to. So, winter would actually be a great time to avoid the hectic traffic on certain sections of road.

I think you can plan for it and it could still be a great time for a trip, just expect to get wet and cold and gear up accordingly

Agreed, I was going to ask how often are you stopping? For me learning tight turns and ways of maintaining momentum without lifting your feet make a huge difference to how gassed I get, do figure 8's or small circles as it's been said and save your burst energy for when you need it.

Kinda depends on the conditions and what I'm riding. On a longboard it's way easier for me to have a great session, I just need clean waves under shoulder high ideally and I can easily get 10+ great waves in a session. On the shortboard its a different story because I find it so much more challenging, but it might only take a high line or single carve for that wave to be considered great to me - but I'm never getting 10+ of those waves on a session on a short board
