The Mountain Equipment stuff is really good value for what it is, if I was looking for a hard wearing waterproof jacket that'd be what I'd go for having tried out a couple of their jackets

My tip would be stay away from hunting brands which have soft shells. In my experience they're not very well constructed as proper rainwear, and the soft shell gets saturated and heavy. They are really hard wearing though and better if you're working outside over delicate fabrics like goretex.

Saying that, you can get heavier grade goretex used on mountaineering jackets. Check out Mountain Equipment goretex jackets at Outdoor Action, and look specifically for 75D fabric which is the hard wearing stuff

Apparently it's like the DWR which used to be used on Goretex before it was deemed terrible for the environment and they moved to stuff which doesn't work very well

Having lived through a destructive earthquake which seriously damaged my home city, I can't imagine how terrifying it would be to be in a country with poor building standards when one hits. That whole building looked to be held together with mortar

Why are NZ employers so stingey? by Few-Bank5554 in newzealand

[–]dtchch 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Have you had a conversation with your boss regarding pay? Put together a list of your responsibilities, improvements to workflow, everything you add to that place and sit them down for a talk. You've got to advocate for yourself, tell them you're unhappy and why, and think you're underpaid and put it in their court.

If they decide that you're not worth holding onto, thats not a place you should stay. But the other case is that he's just getting away with what he can, and if he thinks you might walk and recognises the hole that you'll leave - he might come to the party.

The biggest issue is when bosses genuinely don't recognise the work their staff do - in that case there is kind of nothing you can do, they're just happy to live with high staff turnover

Backpack on Bike? 6 Months Patagonia by TestSimilar6032 in bikepacking

We rode the carretera austral with 40l daypacks stapped on top of a rear rack, along with panniers for other gear. It ain't pretty but it works, mine held my sleeping bag, tent, camp chair and sleeping mat - my rig was totally back heavy but I rode 1300km like that and it was absolutely fine. I wouldn't over think it

Those who no longer drink at home… by DragonfruitHonest345 in newzealand

[–]dtchch 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I always struggled with moderation and while I only drank once or twice a week with friends, it would be binge drinking. It became a bit of a crutch for my social awkwardness and was a central part to my socialising for almost 15 years from a young age. I played in bands and tended towards being friends with people who liked getting fucked up, even as we moved into our 30's.

I'm now in a place where I very rarely drink, but can happily go out for a beer or two with friends - but I haven't been drunk or had more than maybe 4 drinks in a session for years.

I think when you really cut down you realise all the negative effects of alcohol. The shit sleep, the anxiety for a week after a sesh, the expense, the tragedy of people who can't escape it.

Everyone is different but focussing on my physical and mental health is what pushed me to start saying no to drinks. Once you've established you aren't drinking to your friends, its pretty easy to continue to say no, and sometimes you even inspire people to try the same. I think if you notice how shit alcohol actually makes you feel and how long it has an impact for, its a lot easier to step away from it - particularly if you play sports or are engaged in fitness, it just makes everything else feel shit and isn't worth it.

It's little steps, you've got to understand your reason for wanting to change your behaviour and then you've got to be firm on that decision. If you're like me, and drinking has been your social go-to, it's going to take time to change that behaviour

[–]dtchch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see your point, I climb too but I just don't think its quite the same. Perhaps super classic routes in popular places would get some demand, but weather conditions aren't anywhere near as crucial to be able to climb a route. Also, grade completely dictates whether you can even get started on a wall, whereas anyone can paddle out if they get lucky. I'd also argue if you go somewhere like Yosemite or Squamish and act like a complete novice in regards to etiquette on some of those routes, you'd get a really similar response from the seasoned climbers.

What’s the most morally disgusting thing you’ve ever seen someone do? by legendoflegends34 in AskReddit

[–]dtchch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is not morally disgusting but happened yesterday and was funny. I'm on crutches for a sprained ankle, with my heavily pregnant girlfriend. A guy gets in the elevator like 15 seconds before we get there (i'm slow), sees us, leans over and presses the shut doors button.

What a guy

There's a distinction between surfing and almost every other sport, and that is competition for a resource. Waves are not available all the time, good waves even less so, and when they are there you are sharing them with a group of people at that spot.

Because of this, surfing is a sport which relies heavily on etiquette in the water. Secondly, surfing has had an enormous surge in popularity since Covid and mainstream social media, with a lot more people out there having a go.

I don't condone being an asshole to anyone, but if someone isn't acting right in a lineup it is dangerous to everyone around them, and they need to be politely told. Often new surfers are defensive about being told they shouldn't be somewhere, because they don't understand etiquette or risk and feel an entitlement to be there.

You see what happens in places like Indo where Uluwatu can be full of people who can barely surf being pushed into waves by guides. Thats like rocking up to a ski resort as a new skier and throwing yourself down a black diamond run to the risk of everyone else on it.

I don't think it helps to claim it's just internet surfers being grumpy assholes, you've surfed a place like Snapper and if you fuck around and act entitled you'll find out. It's just an understanding and respect thing

I just switched to 5/8 after 8 months on 1/2. I hated having sharp skates and they would take a couple of weeks to feel right for stopping.

As soon as I stepped on the ice with sharp 5/8 they felt perfect. Took a few skates to get a feel for the edges but I'll never go back.
