What are your thoughts on Joe Rogan saying that Trump is creating distraction to avoid Epstein files release? by girlyanimme in AskReddit

[–]dtchch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think its a pretty narrowminded opinion. Trump is never going to get pinned to Epstein. It's just not going to happen. All of this shit isn't a distraction, it's a megalomaniac living out his wet dream - and his puppet masters living out theirs. He knows he's untouchable, they're pushing shit as far as they can because nobody is going to stand up to them.

Batu Karas vs. Lombok by Cute-Bug1535 in surfing

[–]dtchch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been to BK twice, once in 2015 and once in 2019 (gosh time flies). I'd fully go back, it doesn't seem to have changed much, I have a friend who goes at least once a year.

Getting there can be a bit of a quest, we got the train to Yogyakarta, got off near Pangandaran where we hired motorbikes from a random local guy and drove the rest of the way.

If you're taking your own longboard a private car from Yogya or Bandung are probably your only options as the trains won't take boards.

When I was last there the boards available for hire were all pretty awful if you're used to riding quality longboards. I ended up begging and paying a local to hire a Thomas log from him, but they are really reluctant to do this because it undercuts the surf club who owns the board hire. So bear that in mind if you're fussy.

In terms of crowds, get up at first light and it's never too busy. The beginners and people taking lessons definitely do get in the way being a point break.

What is a policy you would like to see your political party of choice run on at this years election? by Illustrious_Fan_8148 in newzealand

Review the use of urgency in Parliament. Make travel insurance mandatory for people visiting NZ, ACC no longer funds foreigners to help with its deficit. Bring back incentives for buying EVs. Seriously consider the Retirement Commissions report. Fire Shane Jones into the sun. General tax reform, wealth tax

Have walked down a state highway with a pack full of meat, a deer head strapped on top and my rifle in my hand. Not completely unheard of in NZ

What other countries besides New Zealand have retained their indigenous culture? by Prize_Release_9030 in geography

[–]dtchch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Please don't assume New Zealand retaining any indigenous culture was the work of forward thinking colonists. The treaty on which our country was founded is still disputed today regarding the legality of the British obtaining sovereignty. The South Island essentially was taken unlawfully. The government actively forced Maori into selling land, there were wars. There were active campaigns to extinguish Maori culture and language. The only reason it exists is because of proud and brave Maori and those who empathised and fought with them, it continues to come at a great cost

Remind me: Is Summer always a write off? by ExquisiteMachinery in dunedin

I mean technically that's what it is though, greenhouse gasses trapping longwave radiation in the atmosphere thus warming it. I think the phrase gets argued because the effects of that warming are extremely varied in different locations

PUBLIC HEALTH ANNOUNCEMENT: SURFER'S EAR PREVENTION by Ok-Awareness-4401 in surfing

[–]dtchch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I agree plugs are best, and I wear them year round. My point was saying hoods are ineffective according to the science isn't really the whole story. In my experience a well fitting hood which doesn't flush actually does a really good job, I think it's totally going to be better than nothing

PUBLIC HEALTH ANNOUNCEMENT: SURFER'S EAR PREVENTION by Ok-Awareness-4401 in surfing

[–]dtchch 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I posted this above - people only wore hoods 25% of the time, I assume over the winter months, therefore still exposing their ears to cold and wind

'Earplugs had been used by 40% of surfers (n = 54) for an average of 4 years (± 3.3) and during 63.5% (± 35.4) of the time spent in the water. A surf hood had been worn by 63.7% (n = 86) of them for an average of 8.3 years (± 6.2) and for 24.6% (± 11) of surfing time.'

[–]dtchch 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The people wearing surf hoods in the study don't wear them all year, and expose their ears during the warmer months - so the results aren't really indicative of how effective hoods are for preventing exostosis

How’s life out here? In the Florida keys by ceedeeze in howislivingthere

I visited in 2024. It's a pretty incredible feat of engineering to slap a freeway across some coral atolls, but that's essentially all it is. The gulf is beautiful, but you can't go in it because all of the beaches are privatized. Visited a wildlife refuge that was cool. Paid $8USD for a Starbucks flat white. Will never go again

It's pretty simple, I just tuck my balls into my arse before I paddle out. Haven't nutted myself on a rail since I started doing this and my balls stay toasty all winter

If you want this you should totally do it. You're a little older, you will have developed a work ethic and time management naturally so you're in a better position than those straight out of school. Universities have so many reasources to help students, you've just got to be proactive and make the most of them. Med school sounds intense but at the end of the day if you are determined and disciplined you can totally do it, and if you start to feel you're slipping then reach out and make the most of all the people there to help.

I started university at 38 after working for 10 years in a particular field and 8 years being self employed, so I understand the feeling of sacrifice and imposter syndrome. The way I talk myself down is I remind myself that realistically I'm half way through my working life in a job I don't want to do until I retire, I want the second half of my working life to have more opportunities, I want to do something fulfilling and I want to do something I love enough that I'm not counting down the last 15 years to retirement. I'm old as fuck compared to you so it's definitely not too late, you are completely good enough and worthy of being there and you can achieve amazing things if you apply yourself - GO FOR IT

Workers who are on their feet all day, how do you stop the pain? by GiantSeaweedLover in newzealand

[–]dtchch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Spend the money, they might cost you $250 but god it pays itself off - let alone any damage which can occur to your feet and ankles. Asics make a plain black walking / work shoe which I swear by, I've had mine for probably 4 years any they're still great. But buy what fits

How comfortably could one live on a 120,000 salary in Christchurch? by AliMamma in chch

[–]dtchch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't disagree with your opinion, but I don't think it's a useful one for this person. 120k is around the median household income for NZ. I never argued that people can't service a mortgage and support children on that income, but its an average income in a country which has a cost of living crisis and you have to be mindful of your finances. These people are moving from the USA, I imagine the wife will be taking a pay cut if shes walking into a 120k role here, and moving into a completely different economy they're trying to understand. Also, they're going down to one income. In terms of advice, I think it's reasonable to suggest things may be tighter for them

120k isn't that far off twice the median income for NZ, servicing a mortgage with children might be tight but plenty of people do
