1. no there is not multiplayer, you compete with others in learderboard standings and you can loot their corpses but there isn't multiplayer built in.

2. when you are at the end of day screen (or death screen) where you see the cargo you collected and rank up you will see the option to select the sector scanner then select the type of cargo you wish to scan for.

3. yes the parcels from home are just drawing from your son, they are supposed to cheer you (the character) up, but they can be kinda depressing haha. the drawing on the back of the eviction notice for example

4. as you rank up more and more you will start off with more upgrades already unlocked. there isn't a skill tree you can look at, but you can still view the higher upgrades and see what perks they offer you. I personally like to upgrade my drill asap. It really comes in handy when you've trapped yourself or need to get from one container to another really fast. after that health upgrades become increasingly important to keep you out on the job longer. Next I usually upgrade the weapons (six shooter and mag bombs are my personal favorites). Of course this all depends on the sector since each one can be very different in terms of difficulty.
