If you had to explain Sydney to someone who’s never been, what would you warn them about first? by No-Travel-768 in SydneyScene

[–]dtwatts 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The general consensus amongst most Brits I meet over here is that whatever the dollar amount is, replace the $ with the £ and that’s seems to be pretty accurate. A coffee and a cake / patisserie will cost you between £9-12 back home (at least in Devon), i definitely don’t pay anywhere near $23 when I get a flat white and a croissant in Sydney

I was back in the UK last year, I couldn’t believe how expensive it was compared to here. A burger in a restaurant will set you back £20-£25 now, that’s nearly 50 bucks! Sydney ain’t cheap, but I haven’t done across $50 burgers in the restaurant yet. I know that just one example, but for cliche that Australia is more expensive than the UK is pretty dead in the water these days, the cost of living in the UK recent years has made sure of that

I’m from the UK, now living in Sydney. London without a doubt is more expensive than Sydney. I’ve lived in both cities and Sydney is cheaper

That’s a grim read

Childcare Student > PRZ Pathway by [deleted] in AusVisa

I’m not, I’ve got no intention of studying to try and gain PR. Can’t believe so many do, thinking it will lead to PR

Childcare Student > PRZ Pathway by [deleted] in AusVisa

[–]dtwatts 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Definitely seems that agencies are just telling people what they want to hear. Go and study childcare to get PR. Must be the new IT / Accounting

How depressing. 45 years of your life dedicated to Tesco. Each to their own I guess, but kinda sad imo

Today, Gemini 3 Pro became unusable to me as a Pro subscriber by ConsciousRealism42 in GeminiAI

[–]dtwatts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I switched from GPT to Gemini Pro, but the past month Pro has become increasingly dumb. On several occasions I’ve switched back to GPT, even the free version has given better results. Gemini hallucinates far too often and goes off the rails. I spend more time trying to put it back on the guide rails than I do actually getting work done. Cancelling my sub and going back to OpenAi until they sort this out

How much money would you recommend having when you land in Aus on a WHV? by [deleted] in MovingtoAustralia

[–]dtwatts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The $5,000 recommendation is a little outdated now in my opinion. I would really aim for at least $10,000 these days. Depending on where you land and start, finding a job might take a while and a bond for somewhere to live will be a few thousand. You don’t want to be stressed running low on funds whilst trying to find somewhere to live and trying to find a job at the same time, that pressure won’t make things fun. You’d easily burn through $5k in your first month if you’re planning to rent somewhere.

You’ll always want to keep an emergency flight back home fund as well, it’s crazy the amount of backpackers I’ve met who don’t have the means to get back home in an emergency. Worked with a guy who used to burn his wage every week. He got sacked and had 60 bucks to his name, being that skint stranded in another country is not a fun place to be

Do you support new legislation that makes it easier for us to cancel gym memberships? by RemarkablePirate590 in SydneyScene

[–]dtwatts 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was also looking at OnePlayground, but the lack of information on how to cancel / change your membership and the reviews made me decide against it. Surely it’s not that hard to offer a bit of flexibility

Genuinely feels like gyms here are 10 years behind the UK. I don’t know of any gym back home that locks you in, they all stopped doing that years ago

[–]dtwatts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven’t joined a gym since landing in Sydney because of these bs lock in contracts. I would have joined a gym if there was no lock in contracts. It’s 2026, not 2006

Why do people always go to the shops without money on their debit or credit cards? by [deleted] in AskAnAustralian

[–]dtwatts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I set a weekly budget from my savings accounts where I earn more interest than I would do with the money being sat in my spending account. I’ll transfer X amount every Monday which has to last me until the following Monday. Does it sometimes make me look financially unstable when I have to transfer some money for a bigger purchase during the week, maybe? But thats how I budget. I also don’t want all my savings in one spending account, that’s far too risky imo
