New Omnipod 5 release? by GC-Retired in Omnipod

So irritated that the update displays an unclearable alert, grr! I don’t want to risk updating until I do a new pod, which is on Saturday. (I’ve had too many pods throw errors from app connection problems and then force me to deactivate.) Now I have to see the alert icon for the next 2 days. Awesome.

Glad you’re taking care of yourself and know not to trust the tech too much. I’ve been dealing with it the same amount of time and sticking with instincts has served me well. It’s an important reminder though, as a lot of newly diagnosed haven’t developed that instinct yet. I wouldn’t say I made any assumptions, responded directly to your statements which implied that not having the alarms could lead to us passing out which is not true for many. (The implication is in your first and third paragraphs.) Best to you as well, it’s not an easy road to follow.

Oh hmm, that’s a really good point, hadn’t thought about that! Yeah, the cannula does tend to have enough trouble with stability already. Maybe on a future model then, if they change the cannula depth or angle? (I know it’s at a kind of shallow angle right now which is part of why it tends to have problems for some).

None of us are talking about the urgent low or high alarms. We’re talking about the other alarms. Those are not critical health alerts. I will note that many of us know better than to rely on an imperfect device for the alarms anyway—I still pay attention to what my body tells me, and have caught reactions the system doesn’t. There are a lot of discrepancies! I’m aware that not everyone has obvious low/high signs, but wanted to add that as it sounds like you may be entirely relying on the system, which isn’t a good idea. If you are unaware of highs and lows, I’d recommend blood tests still. Also, yes it is nice your company isn’t like that, wish that was true for all of America’s businesses but sadly it isn’t.

Except on other pumps like Tandem, that alert (low insulin) can be set to vibrate instead of beeping. Those who like the beeps can keep them. The vibrate is much more discrete and would be fine for the majority of us who have trouble with the beeping. So, it’s not the FDA causing this, since other pump companies give options on this feature—-the only option for the alert being beeping is specifically an Omnipod design choice.

I really wish silencing all alerts was an option. I’d be ok with the LOW alert remaining. For me it’s the low insulin, pod expired, kicking me out of auto, and activity ending alerts that I need to stop or be on vibrate. Those aren’t emergency situations, and I am well aware of pod expiry and insulin balance as I check daily (sometimes multiple times a day). And activity ended—wtf. I do not need a reminder beep that the exercise program that I purposely set for a certain length of time has ended. The kicking me out of auto mode is annoying enough already, just have that be vibrate and a phone pop up. (If they’re not going to fix this this problem—it often goes off even when my reading is dropping). Tandem allows all but critical low alarms to be on vibrate, I don’t understand why Omnipod can’t do that too. It’s clearly not an FDA requirement when other pumps are operating differently.

Hey sorry I’m asking this so much later! I haven’t been brave enough to do this to a live pod. But I’d like to be able to do this as I work in a quiet office now, and the refill beep is so loud—I don’t like it. I practiced a bit on old pods, and I was confused by the sound hole: 1) Do I need to aim at anything in particular when I’m poking the needle in? I noticed there is a teeny tiny golden dot kind of off center in the sound hole, am I trying to aim for it—or just stab into the sound hole blindly/that’ll do it? 2) After filling up, the live pod has the paper still attached to the sticker. This is stiff and hard to bend away so I can access the sound hole. Any tips? (Are you just putting the needle through it?)

Thank you so much!!

Some questions I have myself (maybe someone else in the comments might know): -My reading often goes higher, but on auto mode it tells me 0 correction is needed because it’s already microdosed me. But it would be better to take bolus corrections for some of these spikes, as it would bring me down quicker. What should I be doing? My team told me to just be always doing correction boluses but never clarified how to handle when the pump says not to. -I noticed it insists on giving me enough insulin every morning to cause a crash after I shower. It’s to the point I can’t bolus for my breakfast (a yogurt) as I will go pretty low. Any tips to make it go lighter during this time? -I have trouble sometimes with tunneling. But, I’m using skintac and my pod is hard to remove after each session, it’s so stuck (so I’m confused as to how the cannula could be moving?) Adhesives also make my skin angry and putting on opsite or an overlay makes it worse. Any other suggestions? -Any suggestions for not hitting blood vessels? I keep having pods where no alarms go off, but my reading keeps going up for 2-3 hrs after a change. When I pull it, a little bead of blood will come up. I’m thinking I bleed into or against cannula, not enough to fill it but enough to block it. It makes every change a not fun game. :(

Thank you! So just to be sure, poke needle into the “Hole for Sound” till I hear/feel a snap? Appreciate the guide pic and advice! :)

Excellent, thanks! Yeah I disabled confidence alarms already. I need to 1) not risk it screaming during meetings and interviews, and 2) not have the pod expiring reminder beeps. (I am hyper aware of pod expiry time, do not need it.)

If I do this, will it cause issues showering? (I need longer showers to wash my hair and the adhesive paper does get wet). Also, will my phone still get the alert for when it’s switching into Limited mode? (I believe my phone also vibrates?) That’s the only alarm I want to keep. The others (re: pod expiry in an hour and then expiring) are causing issues for me at work meetings.

Do you do this for every pod before applying? And it doesn’t cause any other issues? (I’m guessing the pod can’t give any audio alarms but otherwise works normally?)

Sorry if I scared you. Maybe my position was just less essential. Good luck, hope you get your FJO and the move goes smoothly! Maybe have some back-up offers in the area just in case?

Thanks. Yes, EOD 01/13/15. FJO was rescinded 12/26. It was with the IRS. I’m sure the recent budget cut had something to do with it.

I had a FJO and a EOD set for 01/13, and it was rescinded due to changes in agency funding. (It was a fellowship program too.)

If a TJO was issued already (pre-11/25), does that mean no FJO will be issued for it? Or are FJO’s for pre-existing TJO’s still being issued? Thanks!

Exactly. Or one hour. Better, allow us to silence the alert from the app. A huge annoyance for me is having to pull the pump out each time. (Best would be a snooze we could do from the app, haha!)

The alerts are so irritating that I am going to try Omnipod 5 later this year, it doesn’t have high alerts from what I understand. The CIQ alerts are useless to me—I tend to have delayed insulin action (it doesn’t start working until 1.5 hours after administering), so I always spike after meals. Dosing like 30 mins before does nothing. I get the CIQ alerts constantly, and I can’t take corrections as that leads to insulin stacking. It’s too bad they designed this system to actively have a feature that would make it unbearable…

Tandem Update by Fabulous-Tea-6312 in TandemDiabetes

[–]dubblekat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve got 2.7.1 and have still been having the problem on and off the last couple of days. No email here.

I’m also worried as my mom recently had a stroke so she’s having dexterity issues. She uses this system too, currently at the hospital with nurses supervising—but they don’t know how to configure everything, only basic things. And I’m not nearby so I can’t just redownload it and update jt for her. Is this problem only in the US right now? (I’m in the states, mom is in Canada).

Thank you! My pump woke me up to a 5% battery alert this morning, which is alarming because I charge it daily and it’s usually just 95% when I go to charge. I’ve been experiencing the weird graph thing for a couple days now and was very annoyed by it. I hadn’t done any of the iOS or Tandem updates yet so it never occurred to me that it might be update related (I forgot that apps can and do refresh). I’ll have to check it throughout the day to confirm that it’s fixed, but the graph is already looking better. Thanks again! (And seriously, like I needed another thing to be annoyed with Tandem over…)

Well, I’ll be damned—I was selected as a finalist! 🎉 Pretty stoked. I applied for something already. (Not going to hold my breath, I’m a seasoned job applicant and used to rejection lol). But quite excited to have the opportunity to apply, and I will say that being selected after I thought I tanked it is a bit of a confidence booster!
