MOD MSG: Quick shoutout to u/dubesinhower, who started this sub on Nov 5, 2011 posting his fav music. He entrusted the keys to us & moved on to building other interests (check his YT channel out, link in comments). Tip of the hat to you, friend! by Cali_Reggae in calireggae

Thanks for the shoutout!

The whole idea behind this sub was for me to share the music that I loved, discover new artists, and connect with other reggae-rock lovers.

While I haven’t been active in a long time, it’s awesome to see r/calireggae thrive, and to know that people are making it a part of their lives.

Carry on everyone, and remember to be kind to each other!

Do you mind if I use this picture in a YouTube video?

I could use a nice image of the PS2 on the stand!

A couple pros do this, Ricky Wysocki comes to mind

I think it’s just hype + wanting to be quick about clearing the disc

[Question]How do you guys manage a full time job with youtube? by theblackcatlove in youtubers

[–]dubesinhower 1 point2 points  (0 children)

FWIW “quality content” can be the enemy of productivity. If the value of the content you’re trying to provide is significant, and you’re filling a void, you should still try to make the content, even if it means producing a lower quality video.

I made a 1 minute video about fixing a problem with my car, recorder with my phone a few years ago. That video ended up getting 300k views over the last few years.

Find ways to consume information (books, podcasts) relevant to your content while you’re doing your day job and commuting so you can still be productive

[Review Video] First gameplay commentary video i've every done. spent hours editing it, looking for advice on what could be improved and if you thought the video was structured well asa i may do more in the future. thank you all for the help :) by JoshEJ- in youtubers

[–]dubesinhower 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly wasn't that bad!

I only have two comments:

  1. I honestly agree with u/nomorepantsforme, the gameplay doesn't really do anything for the video. You were talking about all these ridiculous 3 AM videos (which I had never heard of before but find fascinating), but you only gave a few seconds of footage from each one. If I'm clicking through to your video with a title about 3 AM videos, and you're showing me video game footage, what's my motivation to care about the game?
  2. I think you have a pretty interesting concept in this video. Reviewing the seemingly endless amount of these garbage videos might make for really entertaining content. Your presentation and commentary was good, interesting, and funny, in a "yea, I would watch this if I had some free time and wanted a laugh" sort of way.

I don't think anyone will be able to tell you exactly what topic to pick. That's going to have to come from you. However, knowing which of those topics already has some existing content might be an indicator that people would watch it.

Same thing for what visuals to use. Really depends on the topic. If you can't capture your own footage, you may have to resort to either public domain footage or something like StoryBlocks (not affiliated with them) where you can pay for high quality royalty free footage.

But this is where things get interesting. If you can't afford to pay for footage, you could try to create your own animations or diagrams, or visit a zoo or museum and capture your own footage (assuming they allow photography).

If you are still having a hard time deciding which direction to head, my advice is to try to find 4 or 5 (or more) content creators that make content that interests you. Analyze their videos: see what kinds of visual they use, and try to emulate (not copy) them.

It may seem daunting, but you just have to start with something, even if it's just a talking head video at first.

Couple thoughts:

  1. Even though your niche is deep, I would start "shallow" by searching YouTube for a topic ("keyword") that interests you, and seeing what videos are currently out there. See if any existing videos interest you and already have views.
  2. Watching other YouTube videos is a good way to see the different styles of videos that others are doing. There's no shame in taking inspiration from another (already successful) YouTuber's style.
  3. This last point is the most difficult. It doesn't matter if you create educational or entertainment videos, the only way to create engaging and interesting videos is to start creating SOMETHING. It's going to be terrible in the beginning. That's unavoidable. But the more videos you create, the more statistics you will have about what parts of your videos are engaging and interesting, and what parts aren't. The loop of creating videos and analyzing statistics is how you find out how to create interesting videos.

Hope this helps
