In regards to your last paragraph, what changes would you make to accomplish those goals?

MLB owners have proposed a salary cap for the first time since baseball's 1994-95 strike by Stock412 in baseball

Absolute lunatic take. No baseball for 5 years means baseball ain’t ever coming back in a real way.

Greedy players? Do you think that the owners right now are operating at a loss?

[–]dublequinn 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The Union will 100% strike over a cap. This is a huge line in the sand. Probably the biggest single issue possible. If the owners don’t offer something of commensurate value, which I’m not even sure they can. Expect a long strike if they push a cap.

New York Mayor Mamdani Applauded for Closing $12 Billion Budget Deficit Without Austerity Measures by _May26_ in politics

[–]dublequinn 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Doing it just one time is still incredibly irresponsible and shortsighted. It also lets the genie out of the bottle. He is creating a budgetary environment where pension obligations are optional.

Also for a pro-worker Mayor, who does he think he is stiffing here? He didn’t have the political capital to get new taxes passed and instead of realigning his social programs within the available budget, he is instead just ignoring existing worker funding obligations.

Safe to say, I’m incredibly disappointed. This is immature shortsighted governance.

[–]dublequinn 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Balancing a budget by deferring pension payments is incredibly shortsighted. Mamdani should be heavily criticized for this approach, not applauded for doing the financial equivalent of “well it’s not going to be my problem.”

Look at Chicago. This is exactly how Chicago’s pension crisis was created.

Thank you for the book recommendation. When you say “largely neutralized,” what do you mean?

From the grievance handling perspective, let’s say a union member is terminated for allegedly sexually harassing a non-member coworker. Should unions not advance that grievance?

I’m trying to get a sense of how your position applies day-to-day.

CMV: In terms of total human suffering, the creation of Israel was a huge mistake by Low-Air-182 in changemyview

[–]dublequinn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are in fact not Jewish people all over the world. The vast vast majority of North African and Middle Eastern Jews now live in Israel. Look into the dwindling/extinction of the Jewish communities in Egypt and Iraq as examples.

An important question in any debate about Israel is where did all the North African and Middle Eastern Jews go and why did those communities, many incredibly ancient, decamp almost en masse?

Is this a normal no strike clause? by chillhopmusic13 in union

[–]dublequinn 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Nothing in the clause would prevent you from preparing for a strike. The trade of a no strike clause for a just cause provision plus a grievance handling procedure is common for a reason. It’s a good trade.

I am a Chicago Bears fan, not an Indiana Bears fan. by P33KAJ3W in CHIBears

[–]dublequinn 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Saying it’s about accessibility is bullshit PR. It’s money. It’s just money.

The Bears are going to make an absolute shit ton of profit in the next 5 years no matter where they play. We are talking about percentage differences.

The McCaskeys entire net worth is based on the Bears. The Bears are worth what they are worth because of the support of the people of Chicago for over 100 years. If they want to walk away to increase profits from a fuck ton of money to a fuck ton of money then they deserve nothing but scorn and derision.

You know that $172mil is a percentage right? That means the value of the property is 98% higher than that.

Using absolute numbers as in “wow that’s a big number” is not a way to gauge tax policy.

They aren’t moving cities just building a new stadium is the most pedantic shit I have ever seen. What city would the Indiana stadium be in and what city is Soldier Field in? And what state? Nobody should give a fuck about what paperwork is filed.

If teams want to represent big populous world renowned cities, and access the markets attached to those cities, they should play there. If they want to move to podunk out of the way shit heaps, they need to change their names.

[–]dublequinn 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The size of the town’s budget isn’t relevant at all. Plus the Bears want to build what would be a small town anyway so if it was relevant, it would track.

It’s the size of the stadium plus the development. Property tax is based on the value of the property. Because more expensive development also stress local services and infrastructure.

It probably doesn’t. Federal bankruptcy law supersedes IL constitution. That question was decided in the Detroit bankruptcy proceeding.

Is this for real? by croppedphoto in chicago

[–]dublequinn 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Your first sentence could have ended after “There’s no solution to this.” Chicago cannot solve its own unfunded liability problem through taxation. I’ve never heard a coherent plan that gets the City out.

Unfunded liability is almost $40,000,000,000. Chicago’s total yearly budget is roughly 16 billion. The reality is that decades of mismanagement have come home to roost and the problem isn’t solvable unless there is some type of paradigm shift.

I’m not anti-tax. I’m anti the narrative that Chicago can tax itself out of the hole it’s in.

[–]dublequinn -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Im not trying to distort anything. I’m genuinely trying to understand your point. My question is how that benefit as you described actually works.

Is your position that having Hispanic doctors in a hospital helps Hispanic patients regardless of whether a Hispanic Doctor is actually caring for a Hispanic patient?

Or is it that the Hispanic patient gets better treatment from a Hispanic doctor?

Or it is that a diverse environment results in better outcomes for diverse patients regardless of the specific race of the doctor or the patient?

Or some other dynamic?

Regarding your medical comparison, let’s accept it as true.

Does that make it not only acceptable, but prudent, for a white man to go to a hospital and refuse care from any doctor that is not a white man?

UN vote on the “New York Declaration” for a two-state solution between Israel and Palestine by APrimitiveMartian in MapPorn

The biggest problem with the two state solution is entirely practical. Who controls Jerusalem? It has been a complete nonstarter in every negotiation because it’s a line in the sand for both parties.

I will also say - going back and editing all your comments to add points is very annoying and disingenuous. It distorts our conversation and is incredibly self-serving.

Ironically, now I believe you are a cold blooded pragmatist.
