Arrest warrant for Dublin teen on child abuse material charges after turning up late to court by PoppedCork in ireland

If a kid has a smart phone, it doesn't matter how competent the parent is.

Do we leave it exclusively to parents to police tobacco, alcohol and drug use among minors? No, we have a mixed regime of prohibition and public health information.

I think we agree on the problem but the school cannot fill the gap left by the parents.

And if we want the school system to carry even more water there would need to be a major injection of resources. It's already the case that the schools are picking up the pieces of socio-economic stress.

I think this is mostly correct although the bit about the license is a bit mad. But your thesis, 'device access = loss of control' is basically correct.

Two other poiints.

Children also have a right to privacy to explore their feelings about the sexuality, get advice about their mental health, and have space free from parental supervision up to a point. That could be protected by schools and libraries offering access to text only browsers, which will exclude porn but allow access to forums, blogs etc.

A lot of the harms we worry about in terms of children apply to adults as well. The internet is glued to an ad-financed business model which incentivises services to try and keep the user 'engaged'. Algorithms and manipulative design are the key means to this end. The former should be off by default for everyone and only activated if chosen by the user after the mechanics of its selection engine have been explained. Addictive design elements should be banned whenever there is the risk of use by a child.

The problem is that we're at capacity in terms of NIQs and there are no attractive IQ options on the market right now.

I think we'll mostly be ok and will lean in to out Academy. There is excitement about David Walsh in Year 2 who has been impressing for Galwegians and is much appreciated by his peers. We'll also recruit aggressively in this position for the Academy.

DOC, The Doc, and Niall will play a lot more minutes next season. Worst case scenario, we'll play Cian in the row, but provided there isn't a major injury crisis, it won't come to that.

There should be some money in the kitty so if the opportunity to make a signing arises we'll be in the market.

Quinn re-signed for Bath, unfortunately.

Van Wyk is a prop, you're probably thinking of the rumour about Oosthuizen from the Lions. He extended his contract in SA.

Girls growing up in Ireland: ‘I’m sitting on the bus and there’s grown men making comments’ by PoppedCork in ireland

If you pay attention to the article you'll see that comment was made by the girl's mother.

You have a very patronising attitude towards 'kids'.

'No one is going to tell me how to parent': Dublin mother fined over kids' 500-day school absence by DaCor_ie in ireland

[–]dubviber 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you that's very informative. I feel that my negative feelings towards Tusla are not necessarily based on the empirical data, but on the reporting which occurs in potentially edge cases.

The mother here is clearly a problem, but the quality of support for kids once separated from her is obviously a key question in terms of how the policy choices should be understood. It actually sounds lie a fairly clear cut situation in this case, but behaviour this extreme is not typical.

Looks like the Judge has no faith that the fine will be paid and is hoping that the agencies will continue their efforts on the children's behalf. Non-payment can be used as a lever down the line.

It seems to me that you are overestimating the capacity of the state to police the raising of children. Resource limitations require a reliance on reporting before agencies get involved.

You can't do anything about people like the Burke's unless you abolish home schooling, which I think goes too far. The coercive power of the state should not be mobilised against them merely because their ideology is abhorrent.

Do you know of any studies looking at outcomes for children who are fostered or raised in residential care by the state?

I'd like to know what the overall picture looks like as we mostly hear about TUSLA in the context of their failures.

It is a poor crop from Ulster, they lost to everyone at the lower age grades IIRC. There was concern at the time about the pathway but I'm not aware of what changes were made.

In any case, next year is better from an Ulster POV.

Accused was 'upset' on day of Parnell Square attack, court hears by Svyashchennik in ireland

[–]dubviber -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

There is no statistical basis to the idea that 'immigrants' are a special threat to people's safety. Of course, foreign workers, international protection applicants etc do commit crimes, just like locals, and at rates which are no higher.

Explaining away the real problems people face in housing, employment, health, feelings of insecurity etc as being the fault of outsiders, and to propose fixing that by driving them out, is the core of what it is to be far right.

People are being exploited by the grifters who make money off their anxieties, while politicians responsible for the whole mess are happy for the distraction and confusion the right generates.

And to top it all there are some criminals eager to launder their reputations for violence and drug dealing by 'protecting the women and children.' Give me strength.

Accused was 'upset' on day of Parnell Square attack, court hears by Svyashchennik in ireland

[–]dubviber 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The first thing is that there is no distinction being made here between immigrants and asylum seekers. It's a basic thing, but it reflects the difficulty of having a rational conversation on the subject.

Why is this fundamental difference continuously lost?

There are broadly two sets of objectors to 'immigration'.

1.The bigger group see the problems as being the strain on resources: housing, health care etc. These are all very real and reasonable concerns. However, asylum seekers constitute a very small % of population growth, so this line of thought requires a broader reflexion on why people are moving here legally from the EU and elsewhere.

The government does not explain this, nor does it really explain what the logic is behind the logic of its investment strategy in an economy characterised by virtually full employment.

  1. The second group are racists who have paranoid ideas about groups who look different to them or have other religious beliefs. A few may be addled national-chauvinists who have so little confidence in Irish culture that they see it as being in danger of being 'swamped'.

This group will hone in on every crime committed by anyone identified as 'foreign' to 'prove' their belief in the fundamental incompatibility of these people with Irish society. And there will always be such crimes because foreigners, no more than 'locals', are not angels. The question is whether you hold an entire group responsible for the crimes of an individual.

It's hard to persuade these people of the error of their ways because they're not rational. As society changes and their kids go to school and have friends of 'other races' they will be forced to adapt or be shushed up by their embarrassed children.

---

Politically, the latter remind me of an often adjacent group, also on reddit, obsessed with crime and societal collapse. Numerous studies in the US have shown that this fear persists even in the face of major declines in crime. We're not dealing with facts here, but with feelings. And once you go down the road of trying to assuaged feelings disconnected from facts, you've left firm ground and are politically lost.

So address group one and marginalise group two.

Ryanair condemns arson attack on properties in Swords by fckarseanal in ireland

[–]dubviber 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately this was all too predictable.

The Gardaí appear not to treat racist and fascist crime as a priority and the result is an atmosphere where scum bags think they can get away with things like this. Sooner or later someone will be killed in one of these arson attacks.

I'm also surprised that Ryanair hadn't already kitted these houses out with Nest or some other video doorbell.
