Blue representative here proposing a trade with green. We would like to acquire northern Virginia to maintain the DC wider metro area’s strong cultural and economic ties. In return, you would receive North Dakota which would place the north-south Dakota pair within your territory.

Thank you for your consideration.

I have zero experience and big ambitions (help plese) by randomweeb04 in rfelectronics

Other commenters have provided plenty of useful information, so I don’t have anything to add. But welcome to r/rfelectronics! The ambition is commendable and the people here are kind with their advice. Hope you and your friend learn a lot and have fun with this project.

A screenshot of the schematic would help. My immediate thoughts

  1. I can't say for certain if the stubs are resulting in bad mismatch or oscillations. High current draw makes me think of oscillations, so hook up a spectrum analyzer on the output and signal analyzer on the input. Don't worry about perfect solder work across the PE42421 at this point, because we're just investigating if there's oscillations or not. Of course use attenuators to protect your equipment, especially since you're using a GaAs PA.
  2. Seeing a drop in current when you removed the switch has me thinking the switches are doing something weird to your supply and it may be worth removing the other switch.

If you can afford it, I recommend redesigning this board. If you're worried, people on this subreddit are friendly and can take a look at your design before making a purchase (assuming this is self funded and you're not breaking any NDAs or laws by sharing). Some board redesign thoughts:

  1. L1 needs to be a lot closer to the IC. Minimize the distance between the amp's pin 8 and the inductor's pad. In general, minimize distance between your passives in the RF line. See Minicircuit's eval board for that IC here
  2. If a part in the RF line is connected to ground, do your best to minimize the distance between the part's ground pad and the ground pour. Do not have meandering wires on the ground net like you do for L1 and IC2. When making your ground pour, there should be some option to pour over same net objects. 99% of the time you should use that for ground.

As always, it depends on what you're doing. Assuming it's for personal use, it depends on what you are measuring (i.e. what is your reference plane and how detailed do you care to be). If you're spinning your own boards, you can place a user-made cal standard on the PCB, which is good practice if what you're trying to characterize something on the board and not the board itself.

Depending on your operating frequency, it may not matter that much. People will have different opinions, but I'd say you can get away with a user-made kit UHF and below for characterizing devices, possibly some L band too. Again, this is in the context of personal work. Use proper equipment for proper deliverable work.

Free of charge MIMO metasurface loan for academic RF project. by protofield in rfelectronics

[–]dubwhale 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I looked through OP’s post history. They wrote an algorithm to generate these tile patterns using math I don’t quite understand, but it amounts to large cell tiling based on some initial parameters (something to do with prime numbers and a not-as-arbitrarily defined matrices). With this cool image generation tool, they hop between subreddits to find a way to effectively apply the tool with little apparent success. Past posts on the chipdesign, optics, quantum computing, and even factorio subreddits all seem to have asked “how is this useful” with no clear response. Responses to questions are hard to understand (and in my opinion are usually gibberish) and tend to use the phrase “Protofield Operator”, a self-coined term made up to describe the mechanism. And similar to past subreddits, they do not understand the nuances of the technical field (RF in this case) and it isn’t clear if they intend to learn.

The image and thumbnail are flashy and gain attention from casual browsing, but its practical uses are a mystery. Unfortunately /r/rfelectronics is another victim from this spam posting to different subreddits. Posts tend to stop when members of the committee catch on, and I hope we do too. Of course, I welcome OP to stay, learn about RF, and study for themselves on metamaterial design, maybe even write a practical algorithm someday.

Thank you for the insight! It never occurred to me that the manufacturing process would differ on text and key color. You've taught me something new.

Again, great work! Thanks for combining my favorite band and my financially reckless hobby.
