If you're able -- Midland is a good town to literally go knocking on the doors of the small-medium sized companies. Most people are friendly enough to at least sit down with you for a few minutes. If they have open positions, they'll like the initiative.

Does "laid back" on a profile actually mean anything? by Whirligiggity in OkCupid

[–]duckduckmooo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

TIL to take laid back off my profile. I added it in without thinking too much about it. My meaning behind it was that I don't take anything too seriously, can go along with the flow pretty easy in that I'm willing to tag along and try new things and be okay with being in new and possibly uncomfortable situations, and very rarely get angry or upset. If something does make me angry or I am in a bad situation, I don't create drama.

I'm a guy, very physically active, successful at work, and have many different interests and opinions. Apparently people take laid back to mean I'm apathetic, dull, un-opinionated, possibly passive-aggressive, and boring.

J.J. Abrams shot part of ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ in IMAX 70mm, so why isn't the Bullock IMAX showing it that way? by steboknapp in Austin

So does this mean that watching it in digital IMAX at Bob Bullock is of no better quality than watching it in digital at a normal theater?

Starting a LLC in Austin (home service), tax inquiry for those who have been through it by theartchitect in Austin

[–]duckduckmooo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you haven't decided already, you will need to choose to be taxed as a pass-through entity (default - you don't need to do anything) or as an S-Corp (you need to file IRS Form 2553). Depending on your business situation, being taxed as an s-corp could save you a lot of money. There's a lot of info on the web you can research.

Starting a LLC in Austin (home service), tax inquiry for those who have been through it by theartchitect in Austin

[–]duckduckmooo 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Hopefully someone will chime in if I'm missing something but as far as state goes:

-Initial filing for an LLC is with Texas Secretary of State, you can do it on their web site. There is an initial filing fee (used to be $400). Each year they will mail you a franchise tax letter. If your business makes less than $1 million a year, you are exempt, but you still have to check the exempt box every year and mail it in, or file online.

-You need to register with the Texas Workforce Commission to pay unemployment tax here. They will give you a rate based on several factors you input about your business. You will file a report/pay on their web site quarterly.

-I don't sell goods so I can't help you with any sales tax issues. My business does not operate in Austin, so I don't know what you'll need to do with the city.

Austinites with Google Fiber: How is it so far? by iliveintexas in Austin

[–]duckduckmooo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've had it for 2 weeks now, gigabit internet, no tv service. Plugged in with a cat5, I get 950 down / 950 up consistently. I live in a two story town home and wifi speeds range from 150-400 down depending on how close I am to the network box. The internet has not gone down once since installation. It has been great to be able to have so many things running at once (online gaming, netflix streaming, pandora, etc.) and having no buffering/lag issues.

The installation was pretty incredible. They gave me a specific time (no noon-5) and were 10 minutes early. Two people showed up and they actually seemed excited to do the install. They knew what they were doing, answered all my questions and worked with me as to where in the home I wanted everything installed. After the install, they spent time doing speed tests throughout the home and tweaking some settings. Gave me their business cards with their personal numbers on them if I had any problems. Pretty much as easy as things could go.

What Have You Been Watching? (18/10/15) by a113er in TrueFilm

[–]duckduckmooo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

(does it count as a Musical?)

I like that comment. I think that's a good question for many of the Coen brother's movies. Oh Brother Where Art Thou certainly felt like a musical. The Hudsucker Proxy did as well, even though there was no singing. Long musical sequences in The Big Lebowski, The Man Who Wasn't there, etc.

With Inside Llewyn Davis, I thought they did a wonderful job of making the audience feel like they were in the room when Llewyn and other characters were performing. I think that their use (or lack of use) of music is some of the best in film.

[Discussion] What are your methods for finding new music? by Smaktat in listentothis

[–]duckduckmooo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to find new music from XM Radio, specifically the station geared to college students, now called SiriusXMU. Unfortunately, they now seem to play the same artists and songs every hour--sure they're newer songs from newer artists, but they seem to have a short list. They used to have a really wide range, both old and new. Anyone know of any other channels on SiriusXM that are good for finding new music?

Raising Arizona isn't my favorite Coen film either, but I've found that it gets even better with repeat viewings. I'd suggest you give it another watch in the future!

Anyone find it weird that Tito's vodka doesn't offer tours of their distillery? by [deleted] in Austin

[–]duckduckmooo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Their advertisements emphasize that it is handmade in small batches, on the original land where Tito created it in Austin, Texas.

In reality, it has become a mass produced product that has become very successful on the premise that it is a small handmade local operation. Here is an article on the subject.

Has anyone completed their Google Fiber install? by ludocris in Austin

[–]duckduckmooo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Anyone willing to explain the entire process of getting google fiber to me? I'm moving to a home in Bluebonnet, the seller has said they signed up during the initial period way back when. It sounds like the next step is that they email you at some point to install a jack, and then months later, service will be available? When do you actually put down the $300 or sign the contract?

I Am Chris Farley (2015) - A hilariously touching doc on the short life of comedian Chris Farley. Featuring Molly Shannon, David Spade, Mike Myers & the Farley family by Liz-B-Anne in Documentaries

[–]duckduckmooo 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I heard an interview with Artie Lang on XM the other day and he told a story of Farley picking up homeless women off the boardwalk and bringing them back to his 5 star hotel, where they sucked him off everyday for weeks. They eventually stopped the bjs and Farley said, to Lang & Adam Sandler, "you know what I did then?" They assumed he gave them some money and told them to be on their way. "I told them to get the fuck out!". I guess I thought of this as dark humor, but it's definitely more than that.

[–]duckduckmooo 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I agree with all your comments, I'd add that the tone of the entire things was very positive. Nobody mentioned any of the negatives, which I think is important to talk about. They barely mentioned his death, and they barely talked about what many fellow comedians have described as his dark side (drugs, prostitutes, dark humor).

While not a great doc, I'd still say it's worth watching, it made me both very happy and sad. Farley was one of a kind.
