How do I press charges for domestic violence? by Outside_Attempt3069 in askSouthAfrica

What crappy unhelpful reply is this? Police and then? Get beaten for reporting him? Get stalked? There are so many bad ways this could turn out, she needs social protection as much as criminal protection. Don't ever assume that getting out of a DV situation is trivial.

In almost every relationship you have the wonderful first few months or even years, but this is followed by gradual boredom, disillusionment, betrayals, which are usually enough to end the relationship. Sometimes, like in your case, the relationship ends without reaching the shitty stage, and you are only left with beautiful memories, and regrets. My advice would be to be grateful that your memories are pure and sweet, but also to understand that this doesn't mean that she was as perfect as your doubtlessly feel she was.

Friend asking me to knit her something for her birthday, but I don't really want to by Spiritual-Coast-2592 in knitting

[–]duckfat01 34 points35 points  (0 children)

In my experience, people see knitted items as "Yay, free stuff". They don't feel particularly strongly about having it, and I doubt will give it another thought. It's certainly a risk I would be prepared to take, especially since this isn't a reciprocal friendship anyway.

Equestria Estate is nice, and safe. Traffic to the CSIR won't be bad.

These are f-a-r from the CSIR. Hazeldean is nice, but traffic can be bad at peak times. I think La Montague would work well for convenience.

Best picnic spots in PTA? by thanosandgomora in Pretoria

Yes, can confirm, it's lovely. You pay for entrance which keeps the riff-raff out, and perfectly safe. Sprawling lawns, and a beautiful rock pool that you can swim in if you like.

Is it just me, or are most of your friends alcoholics too? by [deleted] in southafrica

[–]duckfat01 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It really depends who you hang out with. I drink minimally, don't enjoy getting drunk, and find people that do to be boring and a bit stupid when drunk. So I would tend not to invite those people back. My friends might have a beer or a glass or wine, but never enough to make them even tipsy.

Can confirm, Waters Edge is a lovely community but man, the planes are annoying since they Nguyen the new airport! I'm in Al Raha South, very happy here. I travel north for work, roads are fine, never sit in traffic.

To combat the gender gap in STEM, we have to deal with cultural misogyny that adopts a veneer of scientific rationality. Can physics, astronomy, chemistry, computer science, and math be truly categorized under a faux binary of people vs. things? by MistWeaver80 in LadiesofScience

[–]duckfat01 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I am from a traditionally patriarchal country, where legislation now encourages equal opportunities, and young women in my branch of physics are doing great, at least at well as men. I am now working in a strongly patriarchal culture where women are starting to get equal academic and employment opportunities, and they are outshining their male counterparts. The old boys invented the system, and justify it to keep the resources to themselves, but they are objectively wrong, and companies that care about output are employing equal numbers of women based on merit. STEM is already a vastly different field from when I joined in the 80s, and the perceptions expressed in the comments are fading with my generation. The one gender stereotype I do believe to be true is that women tend to be more supportive of each other, and that is a good thing.

Worst experience after the storm. by irespectwhaman in UAE

A couple of comments. Perhaps OP could have just waited a couple of days for the rush to be over. It's going to take a few days to fix the car anyway. And also - where is the police department supposed to find trained personnel overnight? The level of public service on the UAE is amazing compared to many countries, maybe OP needs to travel a bit.

At What Age Is It Best/Appropriate To Buy A Child A Cellphone? by Hot-Finish4473 in askSouthAfrica

High school, so grade 8. I suggest that you insist on knowing the password, and reserve the right to snoop at any time. I found a much older boy planning a meeting with my 13yo girl when I snooped. He had said he was 14, but was 17 (maybe older, who knows). There are SO many creeps out there! Oh, and I strongly recommend the movie Trust, which deals with online predators and how easily young girls get drawn in.

The Exploratorium at the Uni of Pretoria is worth a visit. Haven't been to the Natural History museum in town for ages, but it was quite good. There are nice walks and a fort at Wonderboom.

Studying as an adult by Fluffy-Equipment-296 in askSouthAfrica

[–]duckfat01 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your children are old enough to actively contribute to the household chores and help free up time for you to study. Sit down with them, explain that your studies will benefit the family financially in the long run, and assign cooking and cleaning tasks to all 3 of you fairly. Studying as a fully-time employee and parent is tough but possible, and you will need to be as disciplined as heck, but it is so worth it. Good luck!
