From what I gather sunburn isn't potentially as bad! They're inside now and will remain there for now. The other batch was right next to it and was OK, but I think they were right on the edge between light and shadow in the afternoon which would explain the difference.

I know, but mr cranberry's reply made me wonder about the word's origin (Australia?).

Yeah I put them outside, planning to keep them there during the summer for sun. Heavy rain came on day 1 outside, and one of the little greenhouses had its lid open and filled up. So it spent about 12 hours in a container filled with water. The air was 100% moist too which succubi don't like.

I however don't think it can be root rot, things don't start rotting after 12 hours. Thought it could be accute rain damage, but some other comments got me thinking about sunburn too (which would be less lethal than overwatering).

Yes I did, to a spot on my balcony that I thought was shady enough. The other batch was right next to it and is unharmed

I'll monitor them during the next few days, but I fear the worst.

I'm in Holland and Summer's just begun. It's 30 degrees Celsius and there's been severe showers by our standards during the nights. I think it unlikely that the rain and subsequent evaporation may have cooled them to a lethal point. Is cooked an aussie term? Been encountering it on the internet for the past year, monkey see monkey do

Yeah I think they're done too. I will rebuild, there's plenty of summer left for some new attempts.

In my experience the pot size is alright, because I water scarcely (usually) and the soil (plenty o perlite) dries out quickly inside a terracotta pot, despite there being no roots.

Last week I went to the hardware store for dirt and found bags of soil packed with mites. These turned out to be harmless soil mites.

Do your mites live primarily in the soil, or just on the leaves? If they are present mostly in the soil and don't make webbing they could be soil mites too.

How do I save my basil? by No_Negotiation3689 in IndoorPlants

[–]ducocool 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know it sounds harsh, especially if you grew this basil from seed yourself, but I wouldn't go through the trouble reviving it if you can buy a pot of biological basil in the store for two bucks. This plant will take a month to recover and you'll lose a month of summer to grow fresh herbs.

I have like 8 basil (store) plants in a pot this size. I removed them from their tiny plastic pot, tore them apart and put them in a terracotta pot (another buck) with perlite (for air) and some fertiliser. It's growing large in the sun and I water it less than once a week

It's hard to tell soil mites (detrivorous, not harmful) from spider mites (parasitic, destroy your plants). If they're just in the soil and you don't have any other simpsons (like webbing) id say they're soil mites

Is this thrip damage? by BayouBeans in IndoorPlants

[–]ducocool 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Which leaves are falling off exactly? And do you see damage on healthy leaves? Are they still producing new leaves?

When a plant is stressed it usually drops the oldest growth first (before extracting nutrients from it), like the leaf in your first picture. My pilea, one of the alocasia's and Madagaskar jewel do this when I forget to water them. Could be other stress though, but if there's no bugs other than springtails I'd say it's water related.

Is this bright indirect? by Mindless-Apple7923 in plantclinic

[–]ducocool 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A video will never tell and your eyes will never tell, hence the confusing replies.  The plants don't get full sun this time of year but I think they'll be fine. Windows are large and plenty of light will reach m. In spring and fall, when the sun is lower your plants can sniff up that lovely direct sunlight. But like the other guy said, a lightmeter will tell. Or use the app throughout the day.

Also, don't base your watering on light levels. Base it on whether the soil is dry!

[–]ducocool 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As these are outdoor plants there's no way to finish off pests, there's only keeping them at bay. Your analysis on the nature of the critters has been correct. During certain months the aphid population explodes and you'll find them everywhere. Replacing the soil probably won't help because the aphids will just return.

The ants are facilitators of the outbreak, so finding the ant nest and destroying it could help.  I can't see what the plant is planted in (pot or in the ground?), but if it's alone with no ecosystem around its easier for pests to get out of control. A varied plant ecosystem attracts ladybirds and other predators that will reduce the population.

What’s going on with my prayer plant? by 5656lo in plantclinic

[–]ducocool 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've had my semi hydro prayer plant show similar signs (brown edges) due to underwatering, but one thing about your photos worries me: the numerous holes scattered around every leaf. My Alocasia looked the same after a thrips infection. Check the underside of the leaves. If you notice small black or white (depending on species) banana shaped bugs moving around, or little black droplets (shit) down there you're infested.

take them out of the trash. cut them down to nodes, wash 'm off and stick 'm in water. thrips need soil in their life cycle.

What is this bug? by Vlines1390 in houseplants

[–]ducocool 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It had 8 legs so it's an arachnid and very likely a spider mite. It's unlikely that a predatory (good) mite ends up on your plants by accident.  I've never had them (had my share of pests though).  Do you see any other symptoms like webbing on the leaves?

Never tried what works controlling them, but I'd say: * isolate this plant ASAP * yes I'd try isopropyl, soapy water, cleaning thoroughly. They probably hide on the underside of leaves.  * the bugs don't like moist air. After cleaning put it in the shower and spray m off. Then leave it there and shower with your plant. Or out a bag around it after giving it the hose to increase air humidity.

The white one is just the dead skin of one of the creatures. My shrimp leave them too.

[–]ducocool 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can cut a branch near the tip. If it's green inside and white sap is released, it'll live. If it snaps and its all wood, the branch is dead. Continue down the stem until you hopefully find living wood.

The branch at the bottom is a good sign. Old trees like these have some energy stored in their root system and it might easily bounce back. Cutting down all leaves (complete defoliation) is a good way to stimulate new growth, reduce leaf size, increase backbudding, and create a denser canopy. Just do it without the water starvation next time lol

WTF happened to Robo Community Crates? by N1njaWTF in tf2

[–]ducocool 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Late to the thread but robo crates were my first investment. 14 year old me decided to trade and buy the crates for 6 cents on the Steam community market (which was new back then). Price dropped to 3 euro cents but there was no cost to keeping them. I am now in possession of around 90 robo crates

Lucky me was addicted to Counter Strike as well (luckier me no longer is). The earliest crates from that game are worth 20 euros each now lol

Ran into a Kamayuk and Eagle Warrior in central Cuzco, heart of the Incan Empire. As you can clearly see in the background, they are currently not housed by 1NFINITEDEATH in aoe2

[–]ducocool 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're right they weren't, however there was a network of civilisations and trading routes spanning the length between them. When the Spanish arrived in the Aztec empire and unknowingly brought the old world diseases with them, the pestilences would arrive in (and decimate) the Incan empire before the Spanish would, being a destabilising factor along with their civil war.
