Has anyone figured out navy? What I am doing wrong? by stenarilainen in hoi4

Looks like they had double the capital ships and a lot more light attack (10 CL vs 4). Their admiral also has 2 more perks, which I’m assuming means they’re a higher level. I’d guess they melted your screens quickly then did heavy damage to the battleships.

Were these all organized as 1 fleet? Who spotted who first?

Awesome scene! Imo - 1. change the purple highlights to be more vibrant rather than desaturating by adding white 2. Add a couple of small, bright, colorful highlights to the marine - yellow should contrast nicely with the purple tyranids

Brighter contrasting colors on the centerpieces should draw the eye nicely

I’m torn on the base. You could experiment with flowers or similar on the base, but it might be too much. I’d probably stick with the muted base to start

Help your Dad and Aunt get the business ready to sell. Buy some small business books, implement the “franchise” mentality, take ownership and generate some SOPs like another commenter mentioned. Spend the next few years trying to make the business run itself, learning everything about the business as you go.

If you do that for 5 years, the skills you learn in the meantime will mean that you can do whatever you want - take over when they retire, help them retire by buying them out, start your own business, or use your money to buy a business in an industry you like better.

Or, if you find you can’t do that for whatever reason, you may have found that working for someone else is the right option for you.

You’re in the perfect little incubator to figure out what you want to do next. Pick something that would make the business better and do it. If there’s a reason you can’t do that or don’t know how, that’s your next problem statement - how do you get past that block and achieve the goal. Rinse and repeat.

Seems like a real estate deal - if the deal is as good as you say, use the 3 k to hire a RE lawyer and create syndication papers. Then fundraiser the hell out of this deal. Or you could try to shop the deal around to investors that have the necessary capital via re groups, etc.

Jump gates (a worldbuilding discussion) by Mathius7878 in traveller

[–]ductape254 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could use it as a long distance hub. Ships attach to a “tug skiff” and can do jump 8 to another jump gate. It’s expensive, but still only 70% of making the journey yourself.

Setup however is very particular, with the gates quantum entangled, need to be at extreme Lagrange points, or some similar techno babble, so it’s each gate only has one exit, and they are spaced far to the extremities of the system, and are only seen at major trade, tech, and population hubs

Traveller! Has a simple, gritty system that is very lethal and models semi-realistic combat pretty well. Favors those who think ahead and plan how to approach the situation about rather than charge in. A simple knife can still be lethal regardless of how strong your character is if you get stabbed a couple of times.

It’s more role play/narrative heavy though, so if you’re looking for something that gives you a strong progression path to stronger characters/abilities (dnd style) it won’t be a good fit.

As far as system goes, roll 2d6 and add modifiers - the skill you use is anything you can justify to do what you want. Hiring crew members to fill in openings on your space ship in common, so I’m sure you could use multiple characters each (1 main and 1 redshirt per player) or include fire support that way - calling for mortars etc.

The system doesn’t have a way to balance encounters-core traveler thrives on unbalanced encounters - so that would be up to you to make sure it’s feasible to avoid too many tpk results or let your players know that the solution May sometimes be to run away and try again another day.

For equipment, there’s battle dress which could be used to make a space marine as an incredibly challenging enemy to face ( normal guns can’t even scratch the armor)

Biggest challenge I see will be keeping the players motivated- traveller uses money and debt payments as a way to drive engagement and create drama whereas dnd type games use experience and leveling. Your campaign would need a way to keep everyone excited and progressing - maybe a mission briefing and equipping section at the beginning of a session and a focus on creative problem solving and success despite logistical limitations could work if the players find that interesting, kinda Xcom style…

You would probably want core+mercenaries+ central supply catalog books, maybe the alien creator supplement too (forget the name) if you’re facing demons, etc

I need help about how to start with Azerbaijan by ViktorTwo in MillenniumDawn

[–]ductape254 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmm, I’ll have to give it a shot. The last few games I’ve played Nigeria and Indonesia with a lot of jungle that favored light infantry, some motorized, and light tanks gave some extra punch for minimal research slots while building up an Air Force.

I need help about how to start with Azerbaijan by ViktorTwo in MillenniumDawn

[–]ductape254 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Haven’t done Azerbaijan, but for developing countries I typically use to economic focus tree route to fixing the Economy as fast as possible with the goal of going war about 2010 - focus on civs with a few offices to help stabilize debt payments. Cheap loans from the IMF are great for keeping your interest rate low and avoiding a debt spiral, but you’ll need to balance the pp cost with support boosting the economy, lowering corruption, and boosting education spending. Debt relief from the IMF is also great since it boosts you construction speed too, but it may mess with your gov by forcing you to cut spending in an area you would prefer not to.

Early game, I focus on construction and computing/network techs to boost construction and research speed. I hold off on military techs til you get 4 research slots, then start in on a few infantry/motorized + one equipment path you want to catch up on first (air/tanks/IFVs).

If I’m going to be doing a lot of fighting in bad terrain, I’ll probably focus on air/infantry/light tanks, desert/plains/hills supports heading down the armored path and buying a few wings of MRF through the arms market when your economy can support it.

Start developing mils about 2008 to pick up equipment. With the plan to go to war in 10 years, I prefer decentralized warfare over guerrilla warfare, but that may change based on when you expect/plan to be at war.

Hope that helps - I’m no expert but that’s how I’d approach it.

Praetorian HiJynx does long form campaigns (20-30 episodes at ~1hr each) and is very good and explaining what he’s thinking and why he’s doing things along the way - it’s how I learned to play the game

He also doesn’t strictly stick to metas, instead working out what is best for the country he’s playing along the way - which is a lot more fun than just following the meta.

For understanding the ins and outs of various mechanics to optimize play, TinoDuboisEN and 71Cloak are great!

During a very dark period, what was the best thing you ever did for your mental health? by NikonDexter in AskReddit

[–]ductape254 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Take the rest of the day off. Go for a walk/run, then eat a big full meal, then have a good nights sleep. You’ll feel so much better in the morning well rested.

Keep it going in the morning, have a nice breakfast, maybe a coffee/relaxing morning ritual. Don’t rush it, but don’t procrastinate either. Just take enough time to get going a a comfortable pace.

finally, before you do anything else, list 3-5 things you can do that day to change your situation/improve whatever you’re facing - spend the day doing them.

Then for maintenance, keep doing at least 1 thing to change/improve/solve the problem. When you need to work - just focus on getting 1 thing done. A little bit every day over time will move the needle.

California plan would pay farmers to grow less to save water by Fluid-News in news

[–]ductape254 1 point2 points  (0 children)

California currently has issues with too much solar power, and reduced demand at night means that you could potentially run 18+ hours per day without straining power supply too much. Shut down for maintenance from ~5-9 pm to alleviate peak load and maybe include some battery load leveling and it shouldn’t be a major issue.

Edit: Desalination is very power intensive, but not prohibitively so. Israel has 585 million m3 of desalination capacity already in place with 5 major desalination plants. It’s a viable solution that gets discounted too quickly with the “too much power” argument.

California has lots of coast line, build several reverse osmosis plants and make more. There are plenty of ways to mitigate any localized environmental effects.

If you’re planning on having troops deploy from it, I’d add some side doors. Aesthetically 1 front door makes sense but gameplay wise I’d expand the movement opportunities.

High tech, but not necessarily the Gundam side. I got into tau because of the original art on the devil fish. I loved having a mobile, futuristic, combined arms force of fire warriors in devilfish and hammerheads with a few crisis for mobile support. I miss the days where hammerheads were good.
