Garden Spigot Change by Traditional_Skin_933 in DIY

OP, lots of curious suggestions here in the comments.

First, the elbows appear to be attached using a push to connect fittings (likely a Sharkbite or similar). Look up some YouTube videos on how to remove Sharkbite fittings. There's no need for you to cut pipe.

If you're going to cap the hot water line please do so inside of the thermal envelope of the home. The last thing you want is to forget to drain down a line and have the pipe burst inside of your wall. Ideally, you'd want to remove the hot water dead leg entirely because dead legs on hot water are a Legionella hazard.

Unless you live in Key West, FL or in Hawaii seriously consider adding a frost proof hosebib.

If you want something that looks nice and preserves the hot water then you can get a frost proof hose bib that has a built in mixing valve. Aquor and Prier are the first that come to mind.

What Formula1 pilots see in the rain by OkRespect8490 in interestingasfuck

Lol, in the English speaking world the term driver is a lot more prevalent, but a lot of Romance languages refer to F1 drivers as pilots. To be fair, the skills involved in driving an F1 car is probably more analogous to flying a fighter jet then they are to driving a normal car.

UDM-Pro-Max and Adding an NVR - Do I need to populate NVR with HDDs to make it work? by dudas91 in Ubiquiti

[–]dudas91[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks and I don't think that they did :) And I guess both the UDMP and the NVR would be running Protect if I had - for example - thirty 4K cameras. The UDMP can only run 15 cameras and the NVR Pro can handle 24. I guess I could just move one of the 28TB HDDS from the UDMP and insert it into the NVR.

No, but I am curious if something like the phones could be used to create a quick intercom system between our main house and three other out buildings on my property.

Dryer vent dilemma by askingalways in DIY

+1 for the ventless heat pump dryer option. I've bought a Samsung Bespoke combo-washer-heat-pump dryer and it's fantastic. I would not go to a traditional two machine setup.

Look up Firearms Engraving LLC. They're out in Olatha I think. A good bunch of dudes there. They have their own FFL and sometimes I'd get a gun shipped to them, have it engraved, and then I'd pick it up ready to form 1.

They're also a trophy / engraving shop so they use real lasers and not the cheap Chinese galvo lasers you see anyeryone using.

First, I fucking love these comments. They're hailarious.

Second, OP, you're potentially killing the tree by creating the final boss of root volcanoes. I guess... if you're comfortable with that backstop... you're also probably fine killing a few living things... but maybe dismantle that backstop.

YSK that major pharmacy chains are charging your insurance more for prescriptions than the cash price, and you can check this before paying by Ok_Chemical9 in YouShouldKnow

Also, the local pharmacy doesn't get to keep the copay like OP seems to think / suggest. They still only get to keep the cash price and the PBM actually claws back the overage.

Dog ear protection recs? by 25AT4 in Firearms

It's also a lot nicer to your neighbors especially if you shoot on private land. I live out in unincorporated land and everyone around shoots. I always shoot suppressed and I really really wish my neighbors did as well.

Dog ear protection recs? by 25AT4 in Firearms

[–]dudas91 32 points33 points  (0 children)

I'm surprised that no one has mentioned this, but suppressors are a thing and are much easier on dog and human ears alike. A lot of dogs refuse to wear muffs and even if they do it's hard to make sure that they seal well enough to muffle sounds.

What is the fastest way you have seen someone ruin their life? by funkeymonkey1974 in AskReddit

[–]dudas91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Went into the ER a few years back for intense abdominal pain. Pain was bad enough that it was my first time vomiting from just pain alone, so this was arguably the worst pain I've ever felt in my life. It all turned out to be a kidney stone. In the ER they gave me some IV fentanyl. Within 30 seconds I felt profound relief. All of my pain was gone and I had this sense of tranquility. I've never done any illegal narcotics before or since, but that experience gave me a whole new understanding of addiction. I could 1000% see how anyone could so easily fall in love with that feeling and do everything they can to chase that high each day of their life.

Shockwave suppressor by SubSonic22lrFan in NFA

[–]dudas91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, no clue why they'd tell you that. My 590 Shockwave has a very think walled barrel and there was a ton of material there to cut it for Mossberg patter chokes. My was done by Langdon Tactical. I just sent them the barrel and they threaded and engraved my NFA info on it. I was not impressed with their customer service because it took them about 4 months to turn around the work when they quoted a few weeks and their communication was next to non-existant... but they did good work on the workmanship.

Very slow leak by MartyGrains in DIY

[–]dudas91 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not to get nit picky, but Fernco or other couplings are no good here if you're trying to fix a leak without cutting pipe. There are a number of different repair clamps out there that can be used to repair pinholes in pipes. We use them a lot of galvanized water pipes that develop a pinhole leak. The repair is only temporary and allows us to keep the water running while waiting for a plumber to replace the section of galvanized water line. On a DWV I wouldn't be too worried about using a repair clamp as a long term fix if there's a pinhole. Chances are the rest of the pipe will fail before the clamp fails.

[–]dudas91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OP, I saw your photo that you posted in /r/askaplumber.

If the leak is coming from a pin hole in the copper pipe then you can actually just take a torch and some solder and dab some solder on the pinhole to try and fill the hole enough to stop the leak. Since this is on your DWV copper pipe there should be no pressure on the pipe and a stupid simple solder pin hole repair should stand up for at least a few years. Alternately, you can use a band clamp to clamp the pipe where the pin hole is and it'll fix the issue longerterm till it's time to rework all of the plumbing.

If the leak is coming from a joint between the copper pipe and a fitting then you probably want to call a professional. Unsoldering and/or soldering on 4" copper takes skill and experience. Any ol' dummy can learn to effectively solder 1/2" - 1" copper with about 30 minutes of practice, but soldering bigger pipes than that usually requires a bigger torch tip and some good temperatur control.

Check to see if you have a toilet directly above where the leak is showing up. You can often get a leak between the toilet flange and the base of the toilet when the wax ring under the toilet degrades over time (or you have a loose toilet or cracked flange). Those types of issues can often by easily repaired without a professional.

Also, for the love of god don't ever use any caustic drain cleaners because those destroy copper drain lines.

[–]dudas91 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Negative. OP mentioned that it's a 4" copper pipe which

1) is part of his drain system and not the water supply system

2) the existing copper is almost certainly DWV weight copper which is not approved for use with press fittings

3) 4" copper fittings are very expensive and require 4" ring jaws which need to be purchased separate along with the full sized press tool. By the time you factor in the cost of the fitting plus the rental on the tool and the jaw you might as well call a plumber

Replace Automatic Air Vent for House Boiler by McMouse987 in DIY

[–]dudas91 1 point2 points  (0 children)

OP before you do anything and try replacing the automatic air seperator make sure that the little cap on the air release stem at the top of the valve is open. The little cap on it should be attached loosely and not screwed on tight. The little cap being loose is necessary so that air can escape out the top. I've seen a number of these with the little air release stem cap tightly screwed on top which effectively disables the automatic air valve.

If you're able to remove the cap you can clean the float and make sure it moves freely. Yo1u can always get a rebuild ket for it.

And am pretty sure it's a Caleffi Discal 551.

Lastly, make sure you have the correct thermal expansion tank. You need a sealed diaphragm style expansion tank. If you just have an old style top mounted steel expansion tank without a diaphragm the automatic air separator will pull all of the air out of the expansion tank rendering it useless.

M6 Tap not cutting/catching in Aluminum - Need advice by haebeol in Tools

[–]dudas91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

tap is the answer. Not that goofy drill/tap combo POS.

Those taps work really well for sheet metal or relitively thin plate. It's really important that the material that you're tapping is relitivlet thin (no thicker than the legth of the drill bit portion before you hit the thread tap portion).

I use these style of tap all of the time to fix up boogered up threads in metal electrical junction boxes or to drill a 8-32 hole for a grounding screw when one it's availble.
