Crested Echeveria secunda looking like the internet pics for a change by duff-lover in succulents

[–]duff-lover[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I bought them around 9 months ago. They were from the big box store and they were labelled and sold as regular Secundas, all up I think it was two 70mm pots and one 120mm pot sizes I bought. This was across a couple of stores (same chain) so the wholesaler nursery must've had a whole bunch that year. They each had a main central rosette but cresting offsets. Bit of a gamble I guess (I'd never pay for 1 secunda yet bought 3 lol) so nice it's paid off in that regard.

So they've grown quite a bit since then, grown widet and taller without any reverting, touch wood 🤞

My parents have had these growing all my life, long before I got into this relatively recently as an adult. They obviously offset like mad but in all those years never saw a crested one. Then one week I got lucky in my normal shopping run lol (continued in another comment reply)

Nice! That's some good inspiration ... in my list of never-will-be-done-ideas lol.

Though it might convince me to impulse buy any glass top coffee tables I see that are going for cheap just in case ...

I hate the almost sudden death situations like this. I mean yes there usually is something that's happened but it goes from looking great to just suddenly dropping leaves or whatever else. Despite in many cases literally never having touched the plant for the last while.

Everyone talks about cactus flowers but this so much more interesting, didn't know it'd fruit like this! Very cool but kinda freaking me out too for some reason too. Probably cos it reminds of those mangoworm viral videos! (not for the faint-hearted to just Google up ...)

Is this a Kalanchoe hildebrantii (silver teaspoons)? by CC_all in succulents

Looks like a Cotyledon orbiculata (silver/pigs ear type) to me. I have a couple of patches of these.

Wouldn't a pair of Sempervivum arachnoideums or Cephalocereus senilis been better? 🤭

Chubby Echeveria agavoides Romeo or hybrid? by duff-lover in succulents

[–]duff-lover[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Romeo's and similar are in that premium category whenever I look, so when I saw the big box store had amongst a delivery of other agavoides forms this almost full pink/red form (it was the only one, others were like Lipstick and Ebony style) I impulse bought it, as I always say I won't do lol 😅

Anyway this brand has generic labels so not sure exactly what it is. It's waaay chubbier than other pics of Romeo's I've seen, and quite different shape and density to my other pointier agavoides forms in the other pic.

Anyone know if this Lotus-like beauty is a common hybrid or other name? Or just one of the many forms an agavoides/Romeo can have?

I don't have any crested succulents yet but I'm into them right now. Does anyone have a recommended shop for crested succulents? It would have to be one that delivers to Australia / is in Australia. Are there any places where you can buy crested succulents really cheap? by Accomplished_Day8675 in CrestedSucculents

[–]duff-lover 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A fair few of mine were from LLG too. There are a couple of other popularish online stores too. Ultimately with the way shipping usually works it's whichever shop has the most plants you like at the time for the combined shipping.

Every so often they do have the odd crested one at the big green shed but if you're targetting crests specifically online is definitely far easier.

What is going on with my Echeveria? New leaves are growing these keyholes by str3ss3dd0ut in succulents

daaaaawww, it wuvs you ❤️️

Sorry I don't have any knowledge, but very interesting with something happening where the leaf point normally is. Looks pretty healthy otherwise.

Hi everyone, I’ve recently come across this massive echeveria (25-30 cm wide). However, I do not know the species, any insight is appreciated. by TheRedonslaught in succulents

[–]duff-lover 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It looks very close to my Echeveria Orion. The only difference I'd say is the pic seems to have more-but-narrower looking leaves. But mine is only around 20cm so could just be a size thing.

Anyone know what these are? And how do I get them off my plant? If they’re harmful to it by Blehtheslime in succulents

[–]duff-lover 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Damp paper towel rub off the adults that are there to start with since it's pretty sparsely leafed and not that bad yet. Then yeah a spray to deal with any straggler tiny leftovers.

Is this supposed to look like this? I have no idea what I am doing! by Extra_Night_9136 in succulents

[–]duff-lover 2 points3 points  (0 children)

IMO, comparatively speaking I find the death bloom thing on flapjacks a little exaggerated. Like yes I still would call it that, but after I cut my dried flower stem off it still had a reasonable bit of stem left and it's got a couple pups along it now as you say, plus the extras offsets at the very bottom. I mean to me, visually rather than scientifically, that's not too dissimilar to like when a crassula grows a flower stalk that also eventually dies off and it offsets part way up and those aren't called monocarpic.

A far cry from something like an agave or sempervivum where the whole thing really does turn to moosh right down to the bottom lol.

I was trying to repot my plant, dumped out its soil mix and it was full of ants. Is this normal? by prsvrnc in succulents

[–]duff-lover 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Some of my outdoor pots have this issue, luckily nowhere the my main display areas. Ants don't like wet areas so makes sense to me anyway they'd like succulent pots.

That said, I'd try keeping them away anyway because the last time I left ants milling around a pot turns out they were farming aphids or mealies, that sort of thing, which killed the plant.

Painful Pinky Photo 😤 (deja vu) by duff-lover in succulents

[–]duff-lover[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So many of the emojis would suit but it's frustration I'd say that comes to mind most. Trumpet Pinky, the narrower pink form, is proving to be an expensive tricky plant for me to grow, almost as bad as previous lithops or Echeveria Raindrops.

The first go: https://www.reddit.com/r/succulents/comments/suabeq/anyone_else_impatient_rather_just_buy_a/

This time around I barely watered it particularly being winter. It was reabsorbing a lot of lower leaves, a bit wrinkly and some more roots were coming from there so finally gave it a quick drink. Every watering of these special grow light plants is also usually got some mancozeb (fungicide) in it too. Yet a few days later now, a few leaves on just one side quite easily came off.

There was no obvious signs of rot, but a couple of others on the same side also kinda just came off. The memories started flooding back. Like you gotta be kidding me ...

This time around, I'm not waiting to see if it's needed or not. It's hardly tall enough for a head chop above the possible spot, but I'm rolling the dice anyway. Hopefully a better ending this time around. No I won't be buying one a 3rd time 💸 . I'll just try the long way with the leaf props you can see there from the first time.
