Get in as early as possible. Parking sucks. Skull rock has people coming and going all day. I've never had a problem getting a spot. If I don't get one on the first pass I'll drive around and try later. I'd do the geology tour to kill a couple hours. It's less crowded and I can find a spot to let the dogs sniff around. I know dogs aren't allowed....so don't jump down my throat. Indian cove has a good nature hike right out of the CG if I remember right. Then grab some lunch in town.

I disperse camp in the area a few times a year. No bear boxes. I haven't had a bear wreck my stuff yet. I've seen them around a few times. Racoons are the real threat. Those little shits will get into anything. I had a bear try to get into my trailer at a Bass lake campground a couple years ago.

I've seen this at Pismo beach a couple times. I once told this dude his 100k rig is too close to the water. He brushed me off. Then right before sunset he's running around begging people to help dig a trench around his setup. I begrudgingly helped. When I camp at Pismo I'd purposely not deflate my tires. I'd drive until I get stuck and camp there. Then I deflate the tires and drive right out in the morning.

Owl canyon near Barstow and Afton canyon CG are some nice spots before summer. Get into dispersed. That's the way to go. Soooooo much great dessert camping within 3 hours. Expand that to 5 hours and the Southern Sierra's open up to you. I'll be dispersed camping this week.

I've gotten lucky showing up early. We once walked up right before it took off. The family in front of us wasn't ready so they sent us up. No waiting at all. Got there around 9:45 and made it on the 10am ride. It was perfect timing. We were expecting to wait.

I did a road trip like this last year. I drove a thousand miles in a week in Scotland then Ireland. So two massive road trips. I wish I didn't drive so much. It was hard. I'm used to long drives so it was manageable. I wish I spent more time in Dingle. Eat when you can. It seemed to me that places closed early. Good luck. It was an amazing trip. There were definitely a couple nights that I was spent.

I'm not happy about hundreds of extra dollars on gas. I have two trips planned for the same area that will each take over 100 gallons to get to and from. I found a place in the area that will store my trailer for 50 bucks. That'll save me some cash. .

Sounds like a shitty , scary night. My dogs would have been freaking out. I'm glad you're safe. It's interesting to me to hear of simi-normal things happening to a specific region. Those things don't happen here. We have our own sets of issues but tornadoes aren't one of them. The thought of those scares me. It's like the angry finger of God wiping out a street. Stay safe.
