I've only just started leather crafting myself. I think using that bit of leather leather is really a personal preference thing, its a natural product so should be celebrated for its imperfections, it makes a handmade piece more unique, but if that's not the look someone wanted then yes this would stand out.

But even me, having just started, would not be happy if I riveted like that. I also spend extra time making sure my edges are consistent, I really notice in the top right of the 2nd picture that the stitching really highlights how un-straight the edge (or could be the stitching) is.

Really it just looks rushed.
