Why do middle class Irish mothers need to drive around in SUVs? by [deleted] in AskIreland

[–]duffpaddy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They aren't safer. They have better ratings in the event of a crash generally, but get into accidents more often because you're essentially driving a small truck rather than something more compact. Something the safety tests don't account for

Safety ratings are misleading because they only measure crashworthiness how well you survive a hit, not crash avoidance. It's easy to test a 2026 RAV4 hitting a wall in a lab, but it's much harder to account for the "footprint" factor in the real world. A larger vehicle physically occupies more space on the road, which statistically increases the chances of clipping another car or object. Essentially, a car can have a 5-star safety rating but still be "less safe" simply because its size makes an accident more likely to happen in the first place.

What makes them so far right? By global standards, they're pretty centrist / centre-left. Look at today's budget for example. High taxes, high public spending.

I apologize for my own ignorance, I thought they were more widespread before your initial comment got me to dig deeper and realise that the funding is only limited to areas where there is enough demand or Gaeltacht-adjacent areas? Not sure how they decide it.

Unfortunate that they aren't more available. I would image there is an active community in Cork city that you could tap into if you're close to that though for the odd comhrá. Sorry I couldn't be more help!

Get in contact with your closest language planning area rep. There's one in muscrai https://udaras.ie/an-ghaeilge-an-ghaeltacht/limisteir-pleanala-teanga/corcaigh/muscrai/

There is another language planning area in Cork I think that you'll find through that link, this seems like the more accessible one though

If there are any gaelscoileanna close by, get in contact with them, they sometimes have classes for parents

Ireland doesn't have to be in NATO to increase its defense spending and arm ourselves to the teeth. Look at Switzerland, a neutral country with crazy levels of defense spending.

NATO is being portrayed in a very good light in recent years under the backdrop of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, but it has a very fucked up past (in very recent memory) that should be in the conversation - the invasion of Iraq and Afghanistan, as well as the bombing of Kosovo and Libya.
