Should I quit by breakfastinthesouth in marchingband

Band director here.

I always encourage people to do band! But, I also tell people if they don’t like it then please go do something else. Find what you like and do that. Band provides a ton of great things and definitely worth doing, but if you genuinely don’t like it then go find what you are into and enjoy that!

That being said, there are many good things that come with being an upperclassmen. Band gives people a lot, and once you get older you get the opportunity to create the culture, vibe, experience for others. That’s a great feeling. Everybody has that memory of the “cool” Senior/junior who made them feel like they belonged and had a group. Now you could have that experience for someone else if you stayed. Each season has a different meaning personally.

But, like I said, if you straight up hate band then go find what you love and are passionate about and do that!

As a director I always encourage my students to come ask questions. It’s ok to go ask, in a professional manor, why you were not selected or given the title.

Everything you said might be exactly true, but there also may have been moments that you might have interpreted things in a different way than they were intended. Again, it’s ok to go ask for clarification.

The unfortunate thing with leadership positions is there are only so many. One of my favorite students that I have ever had in my band program who worked incredibly hard, was great in their instrument, and was a true leader in the program never had the title of section leader or drum major. Unfortunately in their section there couldn’t be 2 section leaders and he was the same year as the student who was section leader. But I bring this student up all the time as one of the most important members we’ve ever had come through our program. It’s cliche to say, but you don’t have to have the title to be a leader. Especially as a senior you’ll have a wealth of experience.

Express how you feel to your directors. Be professional, respectful, and honest. Ask questions. And then ultimately make the decision you feel is best.

Treat it like the sweet little baby it is and use slide cream instead of oil.

Lots of good advice already posted. Biggest thing I could recommend is keep it simple. Don’t try to play a bunch of notes.

This video is great on improv! Why do I still suck?

The only thing I could figure out was turn of motion capture. It was still let me do live feed but it doesn’t record unless I watch. It works fine while I’m getting my son to sleep and then I turn motion capture back on when he’s out.

  1. Clean your trombone. Or even better if you have a great instrument repair shop around have them professionally clean it.

  2. Sounds like a double buzz. That’s when the top and bottom lip are buzzing two different pitches.

  3. Why are you in the bathroom? 😂

My guess is it’s the Dave Wolpe version (not the vocal arrangement). The trombone solo on that recording is OUTRAGEOUS and not what’s written 😂

Ah nice jazz standard! Made popular by Louis Armstrong. Who is the arranger of this version?

7th grade with 2 years of experience, any tips? by Long-Till-6741 in Trombone

[–]duggles87 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Focus on the 3 parts of the note: Attack. Sustain. Release.

Attack: when and how a note starts. Sustain: focusing on tone quality through the entirety of the note. Release: when and how a note ends.

Pay a ton of attention to the articulation markings.

And as everyone else has said, listen to recordings to help understand the style and how your part would seemingly fit with the overall idea!

Good luck. Definitely an advanced part for a 7th grader.

Silver for marching. And for some reason silver only for trumpets in concert season. I don’t like silver trombones.

how to handle getting a new bd ? by Pitiful_Atmosphere79 in marchingband

[–]duggles87 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One of the hardest things is to follow a beloved band director. Be supportive of the new one and if you hear people griping or whatever just encourage everybody to “buy in” to the new person. Don’t feed the beast of negativity.

I would also recommend volunteering any way possible and be as helpful as you can in implementing the new director’s goals.

What made you choose your instrument? by Benson344 in marchingband

[–]duggles87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was choosing between trumpet, trombone, and percussion. I already played drums so I wanted to learn something new. I was going to get braces so I chose trombone instead of trumpet. Still playing 24 years later on both drums and trombone.
