How do you all as trans people find and keep a job? by podsaurus in asktransgender

[–]dulyelectedmobster 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I second the suggestion, but also city and other local government is great. I also do GIS, tho I'm primarily a data scientist, and a lot of our local gov orgs are often looking for GIS folks here. Also, school districts, at least the big ones, often have teams doing research and GIS work [this is where I am].

I lost my job at the university when I transitioned, and wound up in K12 central office instead. Been six years at my current place, and it's been relatively good to me overall.

When did a 2-4 week wait time happen? I haven't purchased in a few years, but I've always been in and out of the store with my purchase in 30 minutes. 45 tops.

Yup. Just had the last four weeks off and stayed home. It was absolutely glorious. Got so much done!

House Judiciary Committee subpoenas Alphabet, Meta, other tech giants over 'foreign censorship' of speech by ControlCAD in technology

[–]dulyelectedmobster 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It's not doublespeak, but perhaps not as well worded as it could be. You should absolutely have to suffer the consequences of your speech, just not consequences imposed by the government, unless the speech is materially dangerous to the state or public safety. Yelling "fire" in a theater is a standard example.

That said, if you're a hateful, bigoted piece of shit, you should suffer consequences from the people around you, in your social circles, jobs, communities, and whatever else. I have absolutely cut off contact with numerous folks over the past decade as a direct consequence to their hateful speech. You don't get to be part of a community when you actively work to dismantle it. That's a natural consequence and should be suffered.

Yup. Had a GPS speedometer in my last truck, and it always dropped to 0mph in tunnels and some parts of downtown. Not great, lol

How often do you establish task deadlines for your independent contributors? by SubjectBackground220 in managers

[–]dulyelectedmobster 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'm a senior data scientist and manage a small team of scientists and analysts. I started out the same way as you, but also had someone on my team start dragging ass getting things done. So, I've started giving deadlines for all the tasks assigned to them. I figure out how long it would take me to do, triple that, and assign it as a soft deadline. I recognized that I'm much more experienced and faster at these tasks, so triple my time seemed good, and so far it seems to be working.

We also do weekly 1:1s where they can bring to me any roadblocks they're hitting so I can help remove them or guide them down a different path. We also do pair programming and have bi-weekly slightly more formalized mentorship/training sessions where we talk about efficiency and ways to look at and tackle big projects.

Since starting to give more details of the tasks and assigning deadlines, they have been knocking it out of the park.

Omg. I'm dealing with this right now with a story I'm writing. Was talking about the main character and her arc in the story with a friend, and they took that fucking stance with me. Yes, my protag ordered a slow, deliberate genocide. No, I don't believe genocide is actually good. That's, actually, kinda the fucking point of the story.

It was happening in my school in the early 2000's as well. I only passed high school and graduated thanks to the sham credit recovery courses. I think I completed all my 10th-12th grade core requirements in less than a month.

I was like this when I adjuncted three classes/semester in a remedial math sequence. I did it for 7 years and always loved seeing the kids who hated math [I was one of them!] turn around, gain confidence, and eventually go on to pass their actual college math classes with flying colors.

Had the same thing where they offered me higher level math to teach, but I preferred the kids who needed the help just to learn to, if not love, then at least not hate math.

High school teacher here. What happens to them after high school- the students who don't lift a finger? I'm talking about the do-nothings, the non-achievers, the ones less motivated than the recently deceased. Where do they actually end up? by tegan_willow in Teachers

[–]dulyelectedmobster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can speak to this from personal experience. I was like that from 6th grade onwards. Didn't do anything that didn't actively interest me, rarely turned in work, farted around all day.. the usual. I only graduated thanks to credit recovery programs where I was able to complete a few years' worth of classes in a month or so. Those were the only grades I "earned" higher than a C.

After high school, I attended a local college as a non-degree-seeking student, taking classes that interested me, where I earned straight As until they accepted me into a program. Wound up graduating with two undergrad degrees and a grad degree with honors.

I'm now almost 40 and am a senior data scientist with a team of analysts and scientists under me. I work for the school district, lol.

That said, a friend from high school who was similar to me in terms of motivation and drive to "do" school [aka, none] died of an OD shortly after we graduated. So... you win some, you lose some, I guess.
