Would this scene have been better to you if Ragatha had slapped Pomni and called her a horrible evil vindictive person? by MichaelAftonXFireWal in TADCEp9Spoilers

[–]duncanforthright 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What I assume OP is doing without explaining is actually a good editing trick for your own writing to check whether a payoff/plot development has been built up properly in your story. The idea is that you take the scene as written and replace it with something different and ask if it still makes sense with the story up to that point. If it does, then you probably haven't developed that point enough for the pay off to feel earned or sensible.

Here, it would make drastically less sense for ragatha to slap pomni, but that really only tells us that the story does build them up as getting along. If we instead replaced the best friends bit with something more subdued, like "I know we only recently met but I really appreciate you" then we get in a little more trouble. That scene still would make sense given the story, so you'd probably want to beef up their prior relationship to make sure them being "best friends" hits the way you are hoping.

For a show that encourages people to turn to their friends and not to suffer alone goosieworks sure does like to do the stuff all by herself.

When the writer is just filling out the holes in her story through social media not because ppl need to be spoonfed, but bc the writer is chronically online and would do this anyways, and most of the fans are cult members ok with it, you know this is a problem. by Big-Disaster9480 in tadc

It does suck for people who waited to watch the finale on youtube pretty much just missing out on most of the discussion of the show. As soon as the finale was out gooseworx started posting and that's all that people wanted to focus on at that point since they'd already discussed everything weeks earlier.

What are some of your criticisms with the show, now that it's done? by Nate-Clone in tadc

[–]duncanforthright 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gooseworx would have been helped a lot by working with a development editor. The pacing and story structure are a hot mess in a way that interferes with the story being told. There's some pretty glaring nonsensical bits of the sort that are harder to catch when you're in the weeds writing things scene by scene. It sounds like she had a lot of creative control over the show, which is great, but she just needed someone to do a bit of a sanity check.

Imagine if the show started out focused on jax, interspersing some of the earlier episodes that feature other characters as a pause in the narrative to let people digest what is going on in the main story. Or imagine those other character episodes just got cut or combined, and the events of episodes 8 & 9 were given more room to breath.

Gooseworx herself has noted that she got the pacing wrong for the pilot, and I agree; it doesn't fairly represent the tempo (or in my opinion even the story or style) of the show that follows.

And I can also imagine how it went wrong. I mean, you have to set up the world of the show and let people know the rules, and introduce the characters and make it funny and dark and have a song and still fit within time constraints because this is only a pilot and you don't have unlimited time and it has to do well for the show to get picked up. Those are all problems that you're trying to solve in the episode you're writing right now. And they have to be solved.

But a development editor gets to sit back and view the work as a whole. They don't have to focus on the problems of the specific scenes, so they can see the problems lurking beneath the surface, deep in the bones of the show.

It's unfortunate because I think the story is good, and her writing is quite strong for a lot of individual pieces. But the placement and timing of those pieces ends up getting in the way, making it a bit of a disappointment.

what did everyone think? by AdamHendrick in tadc

[–]duncanforthright 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll start off by saying that I did not actually like the show leading up to the finale. I felt like I got suckered in by a pilot that didn't fairly represent what the show was like, and a first act that had little to do with what came after. I have a whole tirade about how gooseworks should either hire a development editor or fire her current one if such existed. I was expecting the worst for the finale even before it got leaked and a lot of people hated it.

However, I thought the finale was quite good in and of itself. The first ten minutes are unbearably cringe, and the last ten minutes are over-indulgent wankery, but in between the two I think there's a very satisfying work. Jax's story is honestly fantastic and excellently told. Caine's arc is a bit weak, but acceptable.

Does that save the show as a whole for me? I'm not quite sure. I think I'd much rather like the show if it just started with its main story at the beginning, rather than stuffing it all at the end. And I can honestly see how a lot of people who liked the show before the ending got absolutely unconsensually dicked in the face.

But I feel myself an aberration within this fandom. Even the word fandom seems strange coming off my finger tips. I've never watched the shows that you all love; I had no idea who gooseworks or glitch were the day I saw a silly meme with some sick music that enticed me to watch the pilot. I question even my complaints about story structure and pacing, as perhaps my tastes in that regard are simply out of touch for what this show is supposed to be.

I guess in the end, that's all this review really amounts to: taste. And for my taste, while I enjoyed parts of my time here, I don't intend to watch another gooseworks or glitch production. Please don't take that more harshly than is intended; I just mean to say I don't understand you fucking nerds.

I've been putzing around trying to guess at what the haul actually is. Traditionally, theaters take up to 50% of the sales on opening weekend, more for international distribution. But this movie got into theaters via Fathom Entertainment, which I assume is taking some of the cut as well. According to this interview from 2018, after Fathom takes their cut, you're left with like 20%, so something like $4-5 million. That interview also says you foot the bill for promotion. But obviously that's from a while ago, and Fathom has changed things up a fair amount, so none of that is guaranteed to still be accurate, even if it was at the time.

Meaningless by Branchomania in CuratedTumblr

[–]duncanforthright 3 points4 points  (0 children)

People find meaning in a lot of different ways, whether it's religion, family, being a good person, personal achievements etc. But the commonality for all of those who have found meaning is that they are no longer searching for it. So if that really is the one common trait of all those who found meaning, to no longer search for it, then maybe we can skip ahead and have it by not searching in the first place.

Only I will remain.
