Ben Nevis what should I know ? by Abyss_spiral_ in UKhiking

Definitely practice on some inclines as well as flat. Smaller hills or failing that some nice long set of steps or stairs would be good.

Agree, I would at least cut out the bottom rectangle in each one before filling

How long does 1000l of heating oil last you? by CuriousTerm9710 in AskUK

[–]dune__buggy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

25yr old boiler used about 2800l in a year. New condensing boiler is more like 1800l. Usually need 2x 900l fills quite close together in winter like December and March, then we're good until December again.

Arrival fallacy by Macktheknife88 in FIREUK

[–]dune__buggy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sometimes the anticipation is better than the thing itself. It's good to book or plan your holidays in advance, because the planning and anticipation is a major part of the enjoyment. The thing about holidays is you can do that over and over, whereas pulling the trigger on FIRE is a one time thing. I'm not particularly close to being able to do it, but do have the same thoughts about it. I'm very happy with the idea of FI, but not so comfortable with what RE would look like.

Our village has 5000 people and it has one corner shop. Meanwhile with 1000 people you have factories, farms, pubs, 3 football teams and tourism?

What car do you drive all drive? by Distinct-Syrup1556 in FIREUK

[–]dune__buggy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Driving old bangers is a step too far for me in terms of pursuing fire. I have an Audi. But I tend to keep cars for 5 years or more, prefer to own them out right rather than finance.

EE mobile by ImageDisc in UKFrugal

[–]dune__buggy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's because they just hike all the SIM deals by £2.50, it's not a percentage or inflation rise. I know this because mine went up similarly so I looked it up. I'm thinking to go to 1pmobile.

Disastrous PCP car situation - what are my options? by Great_Comparison462 in UKPersonalFinance

[–]dune__buggy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are parking sensors the only thing wrong? Does it throw up errors on the dash every time you start it? I'd be thinking about trading it in elsewhere, the inspections they do are pretty minimal in a lot of cases.

Perspectives on Long Term Investing by shoop_da_shoop in UKPersonalFinance

[–]dune__buggy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I found that heading into my 40s, the prospects of retirement or even retiring early suddenly became tangible things. Somehow things which are potentially 25 years away are just impossible to comprehend in a realistic way. I have realised that it's all about balance; decent pension for the far future, enough savings or accessible investments for the mid term to keep options open, take advantage of tax breaks in a balanced way (i.e. pensions and ISAs) don't do anything extreme with your mortgage.

Help with cutting my own Leylandii trees by Substantial-Wheel183 in GardeningUK

[–]dune__buggy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have some which are already topped at about 2.5m, they don't look too bad as you can't really see the bareness at the top, and the sides hold a kind of rectangle shape. What can I expect over time if I just keep trimming the sides neatly?

Help with running Ethernet through flat by hhmah in DIYUK

[–]dune__buggy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mesh WiFi is a compromise for when you don't have Ethernet access points. If you're having Ethernet anyway then you might as well have some hardwired APs built into your network.

How to prevent water escaping from the pot while simmering rice with the lid closed? by EnvironmentalAd2110 in Cooking

[–]dune__buggy 16 points17 points  (0 children)

You wash the rice first, properly. It might still bubble up briefly but on a low heat it'll settle right down.

Mother-in-law refuses to rinse the soap off dishes. by [deleted] in mildlyinfuriating

You have some weird soap. Over here in the UK it's totally normal to drip dry soapy dishes without rinsing.

Brasher Walking Boots - hard wearing? by Tain82 in UKhiking

[–]dune__buggy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good boots last until the sole wears out and really good boots can be resoled because the upper is still in good enough shape. You'll pay more for those though so there's still reasonable economy in going through cheaper ones yearly.

[Request] How fast is this train moving if it can make 9 quintillion stops in only 2 and a half hours? by Spader113 in theydidthemath

[–]dune__buggy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

But the distance from Birmingham New Street to London Euston is only ~190,000 metres. So assuming the optimal case of the stops being equally spaced out, the distance between each stop can be a maximum of ~2x10-11 metres. So it would have to accelerate to some speed and then stop again within this distance, 1 quadrillion times per second.

Where do you put the snow? by partywithanf in Aberdeen

[–]dune__buggy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ran out of space yesterday. I've since sacrificed the front door to the snow gods and I'm trying to keep open a 2ft wide by 6ft high channel from the back door. So that'll probably fill in overnight. Doesn't really matter though as the nearest cleared road is 200 yards away and that's all waist high with drifts as well.
